Nobody wants the toes so there are plenty them lying around. I know they are small but they do have seven on each hoof so the average cod will have about 23. My local chippy sells cod BALLS! I've never asked. |

Do they use nautical brands such as Capstan or Senior Service? Am I on the same planet as the rest. Glark used to be such a nice little world before the by-pass.......... |

15 Sep 04 - 02:09 PM (#1272659) Subject: RE: BS: Fish Fingers. From: Don Firth Nothing like a good salmon steak. I grew up on salmon. My dad, who was born and raised on San Juan island (north Puget Sound), learned how to cook salmon from his grandfather, who learned how to cook it from the Indians (Sorry! Native Americans.). Unadorned. No gourmet spices, no sauces (maybe a little dollop of tartar sauce on the side), none of the tricking up that some chefs do nowadays. Just the salmon itself. Dad said that when you were oven-broiling it (having set the steaks on a piece of oiled butcher paper on top of the grill), there is a period of about ten seconds when the steak is perfect. Less than that and it's not quite cooked through. More than that and it would start to dry out. Dad's timing was perfect. Why did I start this? I'm drooling all over my keyboard!! Anyway, salmon used to be really inexpensive around here. The salmon and the geoduck (a large, slightly obscene-looking clam—spelled "geoduck," but pronounced "gooey-duck") were indigenous foods around the Pacific Northwest. But now, because of over-fishing and other ecological chains of events (such as clear-cut logging, which removed the trees that slurped up the water that now runs off and silts up the rivers where salmon used to breed; the silt buries the eggs and the fingerlings don't hatch), the North Pacific salmon is an endangered species. You pay as much now for a salmon steak as you'd pay for filet mignon. Didn't used to be that way. And fish-farm grown salmon are nowhere near as flavorful as wild salmon. Fish fingers. That's where all this started. Fish fingers. But, whatever rings your chimes. You have my sympathy. (Sigh) Don Firth |

15 Sep 04 - 02:33 PM (#1272677) Subject: RE: BS: Fish Fingers. From: Charley Noble Don- And unfortunately "fish-farm grown salmon" are ten times more full of toxins than the wild kind. Has something to do with what they feed them. We're having a bad experience with the quality of what fish-farmers are growing here in Maine. Too bad! Seemed like a great idea. Charley Noble |

20 Sep 04 - 11:48 AM (#1276470) Subject: RE: BS: Fish Fingers. From: JennyO A little ditty: Don't Ask For Bread A wretched man walked up and down To buy his dinner in the town. At last he found a wretched place And entered in with modest grace, Took off his coat, took off his hat, And wiped his feet upon the mat, Took out his purse to count his pence And found he had but two half-cents. The bill of fare, he scanned it through To see what two half-cents would do. The only item of them all For two half-cents was one fishball. So to the waiter he did call And gently whispered: One fishball. The waiter bellowed down the hall: THIS GENTLEMAN HERE WANTS ONE FISHBALL. The diners looked both one and all To see who wanted one fishball. The wretched man, all ill at ease Said: A little bread, sir, if you please. The waiter bellowed down the hall: WE DON'T SERVE BREAD WITH ONE FISHBALL. The wretched man, he felt so small, He quickly left the dining hall. The wretched man, he went outside And shot himself until he died. This is the moral of it all, Don't ask for bread with one fishball. (Anon) |

(There's an old thread "Lyr Add: One Fishbabll &d One Meatball.") Funny how one thing leads to another and you sometimes learn something. |
