18 Sep 04 - 12:56 AM (#1274758) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Jim Dixon Ashley Hutchings and John Shepherd wrote STRIKING FOR ANOTHER LAND. It's performed by The Albion Band on "Give Me A Saddle, I'll Trade You a Car," "The Best of 89/90" and on two various-artists compilations: "Voice of Folk," 1996; and "English Folk Anthology: And We'll All Have Tea," 2001. (Maybe this info will help someone find the lyrics.) |
18 Sep 04 - 04:14 AM (#1274797) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Moonunit I'm afraid I can only properly remember the opening of the song and the first half of the chorus. The rest is all a bit sketchy... Thought I'd post it anyhow – it may aid a better memory than mine! Dont weep for the sorrow has past Now that we are one, we're moving fast Our moorings are severed at last Striking for another land Chorus Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our bow No storms shall hinder this plough Striking for another land Well it's a start I suppose... *sigh* Jude |

19 Sep 04 - 01:42 PM (#1275666) Subject: ADD: Striking for Another Land From: GUEST,Cattail (No cookie) Hi Lynne I have this track on a CD from the National Trust (UK), called "A lot of jolly good folk", (NT code 11923). I have had a try at working it out for you, but some of the words are very hard to understand, (as you have found out already), so I have put in what I hear/think in brackets, as you can see. (Many thanks to Moonunit, Jude, for the first verse and chorus- it got me into it nicely thank you). STRIKING FOR ANOTHER LAND THE ALBION BAND 1. Dont weep for the sorrow is past Now that we are one, we're moving fast Our moorings are severed at last Striking for another land Grey skies (bound?) another grey town Greyer than the two, the mist comes down There's gold in that other bright ground Shining on another land Chorus Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our prow No storms shall hinder this plough Striking for another land Sail on from memories gone Sail on to dreams still born No storm shall shatter our (song?) Striking for another land 2. Time glass nearly empty of sand Come the final hour (to?) all we planned No boots will ?.......... Striking in another land (?) course cord it is cut fortune now the wheel and bargain struck sea spray it will freshen your luck Striking for another land Chorus Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our prow No storms shall hinder this plough Striking for another land Sail on from memories gone Sail on to dreams still born No storm shall shatter our (song?) Striking for another land 3. Dont weep for the sorrow is past Now that we are one, we're moving fast Our moorings are severed at last Striking for another land Chorus Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our bow No storms shall hinder this plough Striking for another land Sail on from memories gone Sail on to dreams still born No storm shall shatter our (song?) Striking for another land If you could post what you think are the lyrics, I will have another listen to it in the light of what you think they are, (if you know what I mean), does that make sense??? Anyway, I hope this helps you. Have fun. Best wishes Cattail ! |
20 Sep 04 - 10:18 AM (#1276423) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: MBSLynne Thanks for that Cattail. Here goes.... Don't weep for the sorrow is past Now that we are one we're moving fast. Our moorings are severed at last Striking for another land. Grey slkies bathe another grey town Greyer than the two(?) the mist comes down. There's gold in that other bright crown Shining on another land. Chorus: Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our vow. No storm shall hinder this plough Striking for another land. Sail on from memories gone Sail on to dreams, sail on No storm shall shatter our song Striking for another land. Time glass nearly empty of sand Come the final hour for all we planned. No ?????????? Striking in another land. One course ??? the cord it is cut Fortune at the wheel and bargain struck Sea spray it will freshen your luck Striking for another land Chorus Repeat 1st verse. I think we're generally about the same. That line in the "Time glass nearly empty of sand" verse is the real problem. I'll have to listen again, and to the other bits where you have heard differently from me! Thanks again Love Lynne |
20 Sep 04 - 03:16 PM (#1276629) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Cattail Hi again Lynne. Right, I will have another go at it and see if I can come up with anything new, some of those words are really indistinct though, and THAT line........Grrrr. Will do my best and get back to you. Try listening at a low volume level through speakers, and also with headphones, (cheap and expensive ones), as things like this do make a difference to how you hear different sounds. (Sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs). Bye for now Cattail ! |
20 Sep 04 - 06:56 PM (#1276788) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Cattail Hello again Lynne. Well, I have had another bash at it! this time I ripped the track off the CD, put it into a sound program, isolated the parts in question and played them back in loop mode, (thereby hearing each section 30-40 times over, continuously, without having to keep backing up). Anyway I think I've wrung it dry (as far as my hearing goes), and all I can suggest is the comments I've made alongside your lyrics. Short of trying to get hold of the original I don't think there's much else you can do with it, (unless someone else wants to have a go at it, they may hear something different). It really is a lovely song, although I wish I knew what they were trying to say, if you know what I mean. The words don't seem to have a 'theme' or to mean much, or have a lot of context with each other, (although this could definitely just be me). Ah well, here it is, I hope it gives you a little more food for thought and helps you on your way. Don't weep for the sorrow is past Now that we are one we're moving fast. Our moorings are severed at last Striking for another land. Grey skies bathe another grey town Bound/Band/Banned: Greyer than the two(?) the mist comes down. Sounds O.K There's gold in that other bright crown Shining on another land. Chorus: Sail on for nothing can stop us now Sail on and speed our vow. Still think this is Prow No storm shall hinder this plough Striking for another land. Sail on from memories gone Sail on to dreams, sail on No storm shall shatter our song Striking for another land. Time glass nearly empty of sand Come the final hour for? all we planned. To/Through No ?????????? No Boots/Books rule the cool/cruel Graced/Grazed Stand/Sand/Hand No boots rule the cruel grey sand/stand Striking in another land. One course ??? the cord it is cut Sounds O.K Fortune at the wheel and bargain struck Sea spray it will freshen your luck Striking for another land Chorus Repeat 1st verse. Cheers for now Cattail ! |
21 Sep 04 - 03:09 AM (#1277032) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: MBSLynne Wow! Thanks for all the trouble you've gone to Cattail! All that technology is beyond me. I've wondered what it's all about too so it isn't just you. I just wanted it because it sounds so nice. I'll see if I can do anything with it now. At least if I sing it with what SOUNDS like the right words, nobody will be able to say "That's wrong"! Love Lynne |

12 Oct 04 - 09:22 AM (#1295138) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Snuffy If you don't know what it means or what it's about, then the words are just random anyway and it doesn't matter whether it's: Greyer than the tomb Greyer than the two Greyer than the tooth Greyer than the tube etc Just sing what sounds good to you |
12 Oct 04 - 03:00 PM (#1295415) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Striking for Another Land From: Cattail Hi Terry. Funnily enough this has been running through my head and I had come to the same conclusion as you, I was thinking that it might be, Grey skies WREATHE another grey town Greyer than the tomb, the mist comes down This might make some sense out of it, but, as you so rightly say Snuffy, none of it seems to make sense anyway, so just sing something that rhymes and sounds good to you. Cheers for now Cattail ! |
