Heard this on the John Hartford Gum Tree Canoe CD. It states it is original to Fiddlin' John Carson but this version was based on Uncle Dave Macon's version. There are two verses on the Gum Tree Canoe CD, but I wondered if anyone has more, or can tell me where to find the earlier versions of the song.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Has anyone came up with the lyrics to this great song yet?

I do remember John singing this quite a lot when he would come aboard as a guest pilot on the steamboat Julia Belle Swain all through the 1980s and '90s.

CHORUS)
Take-a-me back,
Take-a-me back,
Take-a-me back to my Mississippi River home.
Take-a-me back
Yes, take-a-me back
Take-a-me back to my Mississippi River home.

That's all I remember. I'll try to find more...

Take Me Back To That Mississippi River Home
By John Hart

(Very fast banjo playing)

Well me and my buddies started out the other day
A studying a plan how to get away
The light come on and they caught us in the dark
Awaitin for the Chesterfield train to start

Conductor was standin right nigh the road
Then he hollered at the passengers ALL ABOARD
Then he reached up and he pulled the string
Bang bang bang went the banjo string

Take me back take me back
Take me back to that Mississippi River Home
Take me back take me back
Take me back to that Mississippi River Home

Banjo break

Well the train pulled on to the very next stop
I looked around about seventeen cops
Cross my he.. ought to see me run      ("cross my he" is obscured... heels maybe)
Bang bang bang went the Gatlin gun

Take me back take me back
Take me back to that Mississippi River Home

Banjo break

Take me back take me back
Take me back to that Mississippi River Home

Take me back take me back
Take me back to my Mississippi River Home

Allmusic.com says TAKE ME BACK TO MY MISSISSIPPI RIVER HOME was written by Fiddlin' John Carso[n].

However, The Library of Congress further explains that TAKE ME BACK TO MY MISSISSIPPI RIVER HOME is an adaptation/arrangement by John Hartford of John Carson's original song TAKE ME BACK TO MY CAROLINA MOUNTAIN HOME.
