My McAfee virus scan keeps on finding the following file which it describes as potentially unwanted
180Search Assistant\ncmyb.dll
Whenever I try to clean delete or quaranteen this file I get a message saying that th operation cant be done
Anyone know what this is is it harmful

This is nCase adware from 180 Solutions. Do a search for nCase Removal to see what to do (for example at nCase Removal). Have a look at the threads on adware here and get yourself copies of Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware as well.

I should have added that you need to be careful with some of the programs claiming to be adware/spyware removal - some of them are adware/spyware themselves!

McAfee's a bit wierd like that. It won't let you access the file while the virus is there, including moving or deleting it! The only way I have found to get round it is to turn McAfee off first and then delete it. Must be a better way I'm sure but it works for me;-)

Thanks for the spybot suggestion I was horrified at the 150+ programmes that it trawled up I must admit I was sceptical about Spybot as that is what McAfee is supposed to do isnt it
I'd encourage everyone to consider Spybot

McAfee is SUPPOSED to (roughly in historical order of intention)

1) catch viruses already on your system

2) repair the damage if possible

3) catch incoming viruses via download

4) notice various other incoming nasties, such as Word Macro 'viruses', adware, spyware, HTML bugs, nasty cookies, you name it....

It's no wonder that it is becoming less efficient as time goes on...

When I pulled it off my old system a couple of years ago cause it was well past it's update end-time, it pulled out hundreds of registry entries, and the damn P133 ran about twice as fast. I installed AVG at that time, and noticed no slowdown. Sadly, I think it MAY still catch the viral nasties nowadays, but I don't think I would use it anymore.

sadly, McAfee has a rather medicore reputation in the places I hang out these days. It keeps hanging on because it is included with a lot of packages and USED to be pretty good.

As Robin notes, AVG is free and darned good!

McAfee still has a pretty good reputation with respect to its ability to catch viral stuff; but the spyware and popups are not, strictly speaking, viral. Asking that your AV program protect against spyware is a little like asking your family doctor to protect you from swindlers and con men.

While McAfee and other AV programs have added anti popup and anti spyware functions, and/or have produced separate products specific to these kinds of junk, these are still less than fully effective largely because no organization(s) have been formed for sharing info on this sort of malware similar to the AV orgs that get the word out on new viral/trojan/etc stuff. Each program mfr has to find and block each new malware method independently.

My main reason for dropping McAfee was that their own home site is so full of popups and ads that it's a nuisance to go there - and clean up after. Rather unprofessional for something with their product base, and there are many other good AV programs.

Seems rather a stupid way of shooting oneself in the foot - or a rampantly out of control Marketing Dept.
