Five cds of "Traditional Music of Ontario" have been issued, including:

Marcel Bénéteau, "Les Filles de Sandwich Vielles Chanson du Détroit," vol. 1. Lyrics enclosed, notes in French and English.

Marcel Bénéteau, "Vieilles Chansons du Détroit: Old French Songs of Le Détroit," vol. 2. Lyrics enclosed, notes in French and English.

James Gordon, "More Hometown Tunes." Lyrics enclosed, notes in French and English. Mostly new songs by Gordon.

Tanglefoot, "Saturday Night in Hardwood Lake" (Northern Ontario songs).

Tanglefoot, "The Music in the Wood" (Pioneer situations and life in eastern Canada).

Unfortunately, this Canadian article on the founding of Detroit and the folksongs of the Detroit River is all in French.
Perhaps someone will help with a translation.

We studied Detroit History in fourth grade (the last year I lived in detroit), and my family was very proud of its Detroit French ancestry. Unfortunately, we didn't hear any traditional songs when we were growing up.

Hi, Harpgirl-
I attended Vernor School (near 7 Mile & Shaeffer) for Kindergarten. On special occasions, we got all the Vernor's Ginger Ale we could drink. I went to Christ the King Catholic school at 6 Mile and Grand River for Grades 1-4, and we got a day off for the pastor's dog's birthday.
The absolute best thing was double chocolate sodas at Sander's candies.
Detroit was a wonderful place to live in the 1950's - Edgewater Park, Bob-Lo, Belle Isle, Greenfield Village, the toy department at Hudson's that covered the whole floor (14th floor, I think), the Detroit Zoo, the Detroit Street Railway, the Ambassador Bridge and the tunnel to windsor.
