More details on the song? I know of an Australian song of this title, which is a setting of a Henry Lawson poem. As with many Lawson songs, there are a number of different setting by different singers.

Of course, it may be a totally different song that I have not heard down here in the antipodes.

G'day BAZ, Alison & Alan, It turns out that the tune I had in mind was an earlier setting by Tony McLachlan, a Bush Music Club member, who won our Henry Lawson song competition with this setting, back in the 1960s. I suspect (having no speakers on this machine) that Alison's version is the one I have heard in more recent years (which I seem to associate with Western Australia?).

As I said above, there are many different settings for Henry Lawson's poems. Some cavill at Henry's skill as a poet - the folk love him, but not his "Learned Critics" - however, all his work makes beautiful lyrics and his feelings are very basic to the Australian phsyche.

All Three: has the phrase OUTSIDE TRACK a special significance in Australia? How can I read some more of this Guy's Poems? Can you give me any info on the person that wrote the tune thta Alison gave me, does he /she sing it as well?

Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson are the two famous Aussie poets. If you live over here you hear their stuff all the time. (Not a complaint they are both good). I had never heard of them before I moved here.

a lot of their poems are used as songs you've probably heard them without knowing who they were written by

eg Lawson - Reedy River,
Patterson - waltzing Matilda, Clancy of the Overflow.

There are heaps of books of their poetry, try asking your local bookshop. I remember searching the Net once and didn't find much.

the tune I have seems to have been done by Gerry Hallom (1982) I don't know if he wrote it or just performed it. Alan or Bob should know more.

My ignorance of horse racing will show here. The outside track in racing would be the long way home & you will probably lose, but because the ground is less used it's more even and easier to run on. Lawson could have related very well to this.

Lawson was born in the mid NSW town of Grenfell, the same town as I was.

I think Hallom probably sang it as well as writing the tune. I'm sure I've heard a Garnett Rogers recording of it as well as numerous Aussies.

Priscilla Herdman's first album has a number of Lawson poems set to music, including Reedy River.

The song was also recorded recently (beautifully, in my opinion) by Gordon Bok, Ed Trickett and Ann Mayo Muir on their CD, Harbors of Home. Gordon explains that it is a lament by a man whose life is on the road (hobo, swagman, etc.) for those of that group who leave for a more settled life. I'd vote for Alan's interpretation, in that it's a life not chosen by many, and not for those who are driven to "win"...whatever that may mean.

I heard, or read, on either a Paul Metzers or Steve Turner album that the outside track is what the Australian indiginous peoples refered to the 'afterlife' as. A sort of constant 'walkabout' with 'no worries' to coin a couple of other Aussie phrases.

"Their spirits shall live on the outside track, as long as the years go by" sort of makes sense if this is true.

Henry Lawson wrote stories as well as songs. The Internet Public Library have an online text of one of his books. And lots ofr other stuff of course.
