BS: Attention CANADIANS

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - A Canadian province has opened a fractious debate over whether a U.S. anti-terrorism law invades its citizens' privacy, a move that could affect how American firms do business with Canada.
British Columbia's top privacy official is probing complaints that the U.S. Patriot Act allows the FBI to use U.S. firms -- and their foreign subsidiaries -- to gain access to Canadians' medical and financial records.

Both of the above are infringements on our basic rights and freedoms.

The weaponization of space should be a concern to everyone and Canada (Paul Martin) should not be so willing to co-operate on this matter. The people of Canada do not want this!

The U.S.A. has no right to my medical or financial records. They are private. Hands off! I, and many others, will fight this tooth and nail.

For a copy of the Privacy Act: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/P-21/text.html

Is there a U.S. equivalent? Oh yeah, I forgot. Its been replaced by the Patriot Act.

That has gotta be the very first post of the day. And it has just settled a question I have had for years. Midnight is 12:00 AM. That is sooo cool. Thanks, D'van.

Brucie, you're not alone in that question, but midnight being 12:00 a.m. is just one style — and in many cases not very informative. The logical extension of that reasoning would be to call noon 12:00 p.m., but you can't call it "post-meridian" when it's "meridian."

I used to run into the "midnight" problem all the time when I was a newspaper editor because reporters would write that a strike was set for "midnight Monday" and leave us to figure out what that meant when we were editing it at 3 a.m. Friday morning.

I argued that midnight means midnight, but it can't specify a day. I convinced the powers that be to make it a style point for reporters to write that the strike begins at 12:01 a.m. Monday or 12:01 a.m. Tuesday. Solved the whole problem.

I also got them to ban the use of "biweekly" and similar terms because they can mean either twice a week or once every two weeks.

Ain't time language weird?

cheers,

david

Thanks, David. It has had me confused for years. Also the thing to do with bi-weekly, etc. Your idea will work best, because I will forget in a half a week or two and be lost again, not knowing if I have forgot bi-weekly or bi-weekly. One or the other, anyway, and since I won't remember, I won't even know about the other.

If I may intrude with the original topic of this thread, British Columbians who demur at having our medical records contracted out to employees of another nation which just scrapped civil rights, may express our comments via this extraordinarily well-conducted online petition.

There is no doubt that letters are most effective at catching politicians' attention, especially if you follow up a form reply ("the Minister will take your opinion under advisement") with a second letter which makes the boss (or somebody, at least) go back and read your letter ("I agree that...but I believe you misunderstood my point about..."). As long as you ask politely, they have an obligation to answer your questions, so you choose ones the Minister will have to think to answer.

Meanwhile, I did the petition. Maybe I'll write letters too.

BTW, 11:59 PM is yesterday, but at 12:00 AM the coach becomes a pumpkin and all bets are off. (Ask any stargazer.) By the time you say "It's noon," it's already PM. Hope that helps.

Sorry, my mistake. The link above was the address of the petition against investing our national pension fund in guns and drugs.

The medical records petition is still up, but may have outlived its use. My brother pointed it out to me earlier in the year: > Subject: The drunk is at it again

> I don't usually forward petitions but this one seems worth signing. Campbell is still on his privatization binge. This one could have particularly disastrous results.

If interested, you might email info@righttoprivacycampaign.com or try calling "604-646-5351 Documents" (according to the OnlinePetition site for this cause; not tested). Petitions aren't much use unless presented to someone who could base decisions on 'em.

Since 9/11 we live in a fear driven society, and the Bush mafia is seeing to it that we continue at least until they get re selected. Fear will over ride manners every time.

Kendall,

I don't want to get into the whole pointless Bush-bashing/Bush-defending thing — this is just an observation.

Sometimes a little fear is a good thing; it might even keep you alive.

And remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

david

Living alertly and with observant courage is very different than shuttling through your life in a state of fear.

A few days after the awful grim losses of 9-11, a leader at my place of work announced he was done being terrorized.

Amos,

I agree. If you notice, I said "a little fear" is a good thing. My point was that it's not too wise to abandon a healthy fear of people who have demonstrated they really do want to kill you. I agree that it's also not good to let them paralyze you.

cheers,

david

I choose to think about WHY they want to kill us, and what we CAN do about that. Bombing children is not the way to go.

I fully agree, Kendall. Now if you can just figure out how to the the car-bombers to stop and the gunmen to stop using the children of their own countrymen as cover when they launch attacks, I'm sure everybody will be happier.

What other suggestions would you make about how to address the "why"? Shall we withdraw into an isolationist stance and watch world trade collapse?

Or should we stop "exporting" western lifestyles and ideas by wiping out the communications systems in place? Should we drop leaflets telling the people in the Middle East and other areas of the world they shouldn't want consumer goods? That way the fundamentalists wouldn't be pissed off at us for encroaching on their culture, would they?

Do you think we should start refusing to educate people from the Third World so they'll stop going back and raising the living standards and expectations of their own countrymen?

Or should we all study foreign policy at the Neville Chamberlain School of Appeasement Politics? Worked for him, didn't it?

cheers,

david

right on, kendall.

Anyone know what the scoop is in Ontario about release of private medical or other information to the US gov't? Two of my sons work for IBM, and I'm just wondering if they're being spied on ... (not that they have anything to hide but the very thought gives me the creeps)

thanks dianavan, I read that post 3X yesterday and somehow missed the line about googling.

I see this is a federal issue, governed by treaties which may (or may not) have a loophole in the Patriot Act. So of course it affects all of us. I thought that was the case. :-(

My sons are in their early twenties and, like a lot of their peers, quite "laissez faire" in their attitudes toward Big Brother to the south. Somehow, I don't think this would bother them much - and I find that an even creepier thought. Whatever happened to "standing on guard for thee" - or on that note, even "standing on guard for me???"

Oh well, this should liven up the Thanksgiving dinner conversation a bit I'm sure ...
