It's good CD that Cara one, you'll enjoy it. say hello to the lads from us, we haven't seen them for a while. I think Oakley's to busy collecting whelk sperm for the next breeding season. (Do they have sperm?)

PS have you noticed that when you're slightly squiffy you can't spell!
I'm on nights & I can't sleep today because there's noisy activity in the street so I thought a few glasses of wine might help!

Whelks have separate sexes. The time of their mating depends on the region they live in. In cold water areas the whelks mate in spring when the water temperature rises. On the other hand, in warm water areas such as the European gulf stream area the whelks mate later, in autumn, when the water temperature begins to fall. The female attracts the male with pheromones it begins to distribute into the water when the temperature is suitable. Internal fertilization enables the whelk to produce egg capsules to protect the eggs. The whelk lays it's eggs in whole capsule packets. The young whelks inside may come from very different fathers, as whelks mate several times and store the sperm cells until the outside conditions are suitable. Some of the egg capsules laid by a whelk are empty. Those are only for the protection of the young located further inside. Though, only one percent of the young hatches. That is also because of the earlier hatched young eating their younger siblings. Inside the egg the young snail undergoes several stages. However there are no stages of larval development in free water. A whelk's life expectance, not counting the human factor, is about 10 to 15 years

Les, you are an impressive fountain of knowledge. Were you a whelk in a previous life I wonder? I know it was said that man originated in or from the sea and now we have living proof...Les you are the missing link!!!
Best wishes, Mike.

Thanks the Fence

It was very unfortunate that CARA and Jake Reed were unable to make it, due to circumstances beyond their control.

However, I have nothing but praise for Steve Newton, Jane Kitchen & Ernie Geddes, Parcel of Rogues and Roger Beard for taking on the extra time left and giving us a really smashing evening. A very warm thanks to all of you, and of course to all the people who came to listen and support the club.

I'm really looking forward to Oct 22nd as we haven't seen the new venue yet.Wish we could come more often as you seem to be having some cracking nights, it's either a lottery win so we can devote ourselves totally to the music (heaven) or a few more days in the week!

Maybe you need to deliver babies to only the rich people and they pay you large amounts of money for it.

As I managed to explain to the very supportive and understanding Villan last night, we were looking forward to being in Walesby in time to do our 10.15 slot but at about 7 o'clock last night, the East Coast Main Line train timetable collapsed, leaving one of us stranded in Cambridgeshire. Sadly this was apparently due to an under-train suicide south of Peterborough. I know it can't be helped and it was outside our control but this does not ease our frustration at not being able to deliver our promises. So we offer our apologies to Villan and the MRFC. We have ensured that we are as immune as we can be from disruption on the 5th November and we'll bring along both copies of the new album "Long Forgotten" and we look forward to seeing our friends in Walesby on bonfire night.

The thing that I like about all the artists that play at MRFC, is that they are conscientus and ring me if they can't make it. I can't ask for more.

Nobody can see what is going to happen ahead of time, so there are bound to be occasions when an artist can't make it.

The beauty of MRFC, is there are normally about 6/7 artists appearing on a given evening and if somebody can't make it, the show can still go on. May I also say that the quality of the artists is such, that the remaining artists are capable of doing more than a 20 minute floorspot and are very adaptable when push comes to shove.

Thats exactly what happened last night The remaining 4 turns were able to do more songs than they had planned, and the audience still got a very good night.

Oaklet you don't need to apologise, you did everything that was possible, and I can't ask for more. You guys are very reliable and trustworthy and a credit to the folk scene.

May I also say the same about Jake Reed.

So no harm done.

I will be waiting for the fireworks on November the 5th :-)
