Excellent Swarbrick news!

Subject: Excellent Swarbrick news!
From: GUEST,Mary Katherine

Friends: Martin Carthy just called to pass along the most wonderful news that this past Saturday morning Dave Swarbrick got a double lung transplant and is doing extremely well!
He was put on the waiting list for a transplant this past Monday, and on Friday was called in and told that a match had been found and he was to have the surgery the next morning.
Martin says that Dave is already out of intensive care, and is sitting up, breathing on his own for the first time in many years, and eating a tuna sandwich!

English folk music can give a sigh of relief now. Who knows, we might have Swarb of old back again performing in his old style.

Wonderful! He's always been one of my favorite musicians. He's given so much. I'd guess (hope) that, other than the pain from the surgery, he's probably feeling better than he has in a long time. Here's to his speedy recovery!

I'm not a great fan of fiddle players but used to enjoy Swarb with the Ian Campbell group. Glad to hear the good news.

Martin Carthy chatted about this at the Chorley Festival.

The surgeon allegedly asked Swarb when his next gig was so that he could schedule the operation in time.

That's what I call motivation!

I hardly dare ask if this means we'll hear Swarb singing live again...!!

Wonderful news!!

It will be good just to see him walking about, out of the wheelchair and without those blasted tubes up his nose. Just that, will be a blessing.

What was the cause of him needing a lung transplant? Was he a smoker?

Smoker for far too many years. He talks ruefully about it in the notes to the Swarb box set. It's great news, all right...the man is a genius!

Agreed. Lung transplants are still pretty tricky, so I wish him the best.

Swarb was well known for playing fiddle with a lighted cigarette (or joint) stuck in the tuning peg slot. I'm glad to hear that the op seems to have gone well, it was painful to see him with his oxygen tubes in his nose and still barely able to speak.

Ally Hulett's latest email update to me says Swarb's recovery is going well - fantastic!
But he also points out that the Swarb-Aid events that were being organised
(before the double-lung transplant took place last weeekend) are still neccessary and will, of course, go ahead as planned.
Get to one somewhere, nice people!
Dave and his family still need our full support till he's back gigging, recording and earning (!) once more.
Love to all - Duncan
(apologies for reproducing this on other related threads - the message getting through to all is more important than protocol, methinks)

I would imagine Dave's smoking was a major cause of his illness, but he must have inhaled quite a bit of secondary smoke aswell in the clubs/pubs he played in over the years before which probably exacerbated the problem. As good a reason as any for making folk gigs in clubs/pubs smoking free!

I don't care whether he smoked or not, he's on the mend and that is the good news.

Even if he doesn't play much Old Time he's still a great fiddler - I wish him the very best. I hope no=one offers him a fag for a while!

Brilliant news. I MC'd for him and Ally at St. Neots a couple or three years ago and he was sad sight. Still played like the devil, though, and still had that glint in his eyes. Here's to a full recovery.

It's great to see all these support messages. I don't know if everyone's looked at the news page on the official swarb sitem, but Jill says (in part)
"He's ravenous for e-mails and cards and news. And the Telegraph crossword! So if you could spare a few words we'd be very grateful folks...keeps his spirits up"

I've passed on the address of this thread, but I've also set a forum for get-well messages, linked from the Swarbaid site, or you can go there direct and post a message now! I've made sure he and Jill know about the site and will read it!

Since this thread has been made available via his own message site, I'll just go on here and give Congratulations, greetings and all-the-best wishes to the Dave Swarbrick I met many years ago...I remember a wild hillside with tall grass, and Dave showing George and me how to skeet-shoot. He'd hold the gun right against his ear, then complain that he was losing his hearing and couldn't understand why. We were staying at Lorna's house, as I was doing a gig at their club. I never saw him again but never lost that memory- like a snapshot, or a bright moment of a happy time.   Joy and blessings, Jean Ritchie

I've heard nothing more from Alistair Hulett (my source of info closest to Swarb) but there's a new entry on the Swarbaid events page, with The Fox Hat and others putting on a benefit concert in Ashby de la Zouch, Leciestershire.

There were lots of new messages on the message board too, last time I looked.

Let's hope no news is good news...

Wyrd Sister,

I'm sure that you mean well, (and it's not just you) but stop snooping eh?

Give the poor bloke some privacy, eh?

Guest - I appreciate your point, but never considered it as invading privacy since we have been encouraged to offer good wishes ("He's ravenous for e-mails and cards and news. And the Telegraph crossword! So if you could spare a few words we'd be very grateful folks...keeps his spirits up")
I thought his immediates might be a little occupied at the moment, hence enquiry here.
Good wishes to them all.

GUEST - people are showing how much they care about Swarb by enquiring about his health. Its that kind of support that helps people cope with illness and pull through.

I've been watching Fairport regularly for 30 years (apart from the
obvious gaps), and there's no doubt that if it hadn't been for Swarb,
Fairport would have sunk into oblivion in the mid 70's. It was his
enthusiasm that sparked Peggy and Simon into keeping Fairport going
now.
Can't wait to see you again Swarb !

Does this mean folks will be allowed to light up again at his gigs, so we won't ever again enjoy his magic fiddle in strictly smoke-free zones?

Dave Bryant, if Swarb put his fag in the tuning-peg slot, it would surely not withstand the string tension?! I have seen him stick them on a bit of excess G-string, which was cut to length for the purpose.

Non-smoking clubs and concerts are becoming the norm - and I, for one, would not welcome regression back to the bad old days of peering through the fug!!

I feel sure that Swarb will continue to discourage smoking at his gigs - particularly if he finds he is able to sing once more...

As you say no news is good news.

I will be running a Christams event on Saturday December the 18th 2004 for Swarbaid at Market Rasen Folk Club - Walesby Village Hall - Lincolnshire.

I haven't gone public on it yet, because I am still trying to put the final jigsaw pieces together.

So watch this space. :-)

There is a recent update on the official Swarb news page http://www.folkicons.co.uk/swarbnew.htm for anyone who wants to know.

That is the site to bookmark if you want to keep up with the latest.
