Open Door Extravaganza SEVEN! (Manchester)

Subject: Open Door Extravaganza SEVEN!

Hard to believe, but the Open Door Folk Club, Failsworth, Manchester will be hosting Extravaganza Seven at the Star Inn, Church Street on Sunday October 24th - and don't forget to put your clocks back an hour first!!

George Papavgeris will be there to officially launch his new album 'Ordinary Heroes' in the North West, and our other guests are Brian Peters, Elaine and Sam Bracken, and Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies.

Please note that on this occasion it is a one day event; Swinton Folk Day is on Saturday 23rd, so you can get to both! That's what I'm planning to do, anyway!

We aim to start promptly at 1:30pm with a singaround, and admission for the whole day's entertainment is a mere £10.00!!

Contact details and directions for finding the Star Inn are on the club website, and we look forward to meeting old and new friends alike.

Don't forget to tune in to BBC GMR Sounds of Folk on 95.1/104.6 FM, DAB and now online!!

Pronunciation - 'sharrerbang', or 'sharrer' for short!

Just been to the Extravaganza website and its a superb lineup for the price. So Bernard has set the scene. Visit Swinton and spend Saturday playing and / or singing then visit the Open Door Folk Club Extravaganza on the Sunday to sing or play between seeing those excellent performers.

Well organised Bernard!!

Must be years since Sam Bracken played in Manchester. Sam,of course,
was in Therapy in the 1970's, and took over fom Dick Gaughan in the
electric folk group, Five Hand Reel.
His latest recording, Once More Round The Block is well worth a listen.

Sam was also with Dave and June Brookes in the 'Brooke Band' - and they were on Telly in the late seventies, as I remember... Remember his Fender Palomino?!

Sorry you won't be joining us, Hil...

That's about the size of it, JR! See you there?

There has been a slight hiccup in the web forwarding for the OD website - if you can't access the Open Door website the usual way, try this link for the Extravaganza...

The web forwarding is working again for the website... something to do with Wanadoo changing the old Freeserve accounts.

Any road up, it's okay now!

...but not forgotten!

What a great day - what about Patrick Waldron on that melodeon... only nine years old and already sounding like a veteran!! He certainly had Brian Peters worried...! ;o)

We are delighted to report that this was the first Extravaganza to actually break even - which can't be bad!! Around sixty people turned up, and that's not counting the guests!!

The most stirring bit for me was the chorus singing from a full room when Cath Rathmill sang Dave Webber's 'My Lady of Autumn'... magic!

El Greko (George P) was in his element amongst friends - I'll let him tell you about the Tee shirt!! It doesn't seem like only a year since we first met at Extravaganza 5...

Elaine and Sam Bracken brought Elaine's daughter, Amy, who is a terrific viola and fiddle player. It was really refreshing to hear the mix of traditional and contemporary material that Sam is so well-known for, and Elaine's flute and vocals rounded the whole thing off really beautifully.

We don't really need to say much about Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, as it has all been said (and deservedly so!) before. They really brought the Extravaganza to a wonderful climax - and even the landlord, Paul, came in to chill and listen!

According to my list, we had floor spots from (in order of appearance) me, Pauline, Angle Cynn (Patrick and his dad, Rex), Jim, Vic, John R, Cath, Marilyn, Vicky, Susie and Ryan, Maggie, Vin, John D and Graham. As it was such a tight programme, the availability of singers' spots was limited, but we did our best to be fair! We even managed to squeeze Angle Cynn in for a second spot between Jez's two sets.

What a day!!

A great afternoon! (I'm sure the evening was, too, but we were off to Sheffield for an absoloutely cracking sing at the Kelham Island Tavern.) Many thanks to Bernard and Pauline – and anyone else who helped make this happen.

Brian Peters is such a wonderful interpreter of traditonal material – in addition to his considerable skill(s) on concertina, accordion & guitar, as well as his excellent singing. Great stuff!

I was also delighted to (finally!) have a chance to hear El Greko do more than a song or two, and it was all I'd expected: moving, powerful songs about "Ordinary Heroes", set to his distinctive and wonderful melodies – and so well performed. We were all particularly impressed by his "special effects"; the way he arranged to have the lightning flash through the window just behind him at appropriate points during the reverent, hymn-like "At the End of the Day" was a most effective enhancement of this lovely song.

BTW, on the list of floor singers above, I'm Vikki. And my sincere thanks to John & Pam R for picking me up at the train station & making it possible for me to attend/enjoy this Extravagantly Enjoyable Event!

Yes it was a grand afternoon/eve/night. Got there a bit late but managed to see Brian Peter's smashin '2nd' set. Nice to see a lot more people there to appreciate some great music and song.

Hey Bernard, know what you mean about Patrick Waldron on that melodeon. He was magic!. We happened to be sat next to him and his kin at one point in the field at Cropredy festival this year not realising who he was but one of me mates commented then, 'that lad's pretty good on that melodeon innee?'. Perhaps we could persuade Ali and the safra committee to book him for Saddleworth '05?

Anyway many thanks to Puline & John for staging another cracker and of course to Bernard for mc'ing and masterly control of the pa system (& accordion). Looking forward to March! Will try to get to the Open Door club before then tho.

Cheers all!

Hello Bernard,
Angie says she is sorry she had to rush off so soon. As you saw Angie had her mum with her and things were a bit hectic, rushing around trying to do too many things in one day.
However we will make time and get to the next one.
