Can some one provide me with the words to this song? If you happen to have the chords, I'd appreciate them too.

Thanx/Mike the Bass Player

Come on Mike, there's no need to ask for lyrics that are in the database. Search for [spare a dime] if you are unfamiliar with the DT.

Missed that last line break. But I do have the hang of it. This lays out the chords right nicely.

Mike, the link from the database search works for me or I would not have refered you to it. An alternative source which lists the lyrics to more "popular" songs from the depression years is here

I've got the music for this buried away in the files somewhere, when I find it, which won't be this late at night, I'll post the whole thing. Studs Terkel published an oral history of the Great Depression called "Hard Times". In it, he interviewed the lyricist who wrote this song, E.Y. (aka Yip) Harburg. He discusses this song specifically, and his reasons for writing it. Really a worthwhile read.

I have sequenced the tune for this but won't gat a chance to post for a couple of days - I started it a couple of weeks ago. I'm currently 1,000 miles from home.

Roger, if you don't mind I'll also post the chords from the sheet music, unless FITS does this. The printed chords are sensational IMHO, and well worth the trouble of playing.

Aw **$#*, that came out all muddled up, the chords that were supposed to be above the lyrics, ended up preceeding them. Maybe I should do this on a word processor then cut & paste or something.

Good day for posting that song. The different versions of the chords sure show how hard it can be to get a song from the piano to the guitar! (I am making that shift, so I know whereof I speak!!! All these 30's songs are in these tough flatted jazz keys).

Yours, Peter T.

Frank,

Here is what works for me in putting chords and lyrics together on a Mudcat thread. First, you need some wordprocessor that has a constant space font (each letter taking up the same amount of space). Somebody knows the technical term. You start with the HTML command < pre > (without the spaces (if I put them in here it disappears into the background)).

Type in your lyrics. The chords go in a separate line above the lyrics. Use the space bar to make the space between chords, do not use the "tab" or "indent" keys. At the end of each line of chords and lyrics insert the HTML command < br > (again without the spaces). I type it in once after I have laid out the song and then I copy and paste my way down through each line of the song.

Finish with the command < / pre > (without spaces remember). You can then cut this from your word processor and paste it onto the thread. All of this requires just about all I know about my computer, so it may befuddle you at first.

I use Windows' Notepad for my wordprocessor because it has a simple single space font. My Wordperfect 7.0 seems devoid of that old style font, everything is True Type and they don't work.

I will try to reformat your work, if I get the time. Thanks for all those jazzy chords, they get the feel of the song and my fingers need the exercise.

With any luck, this is a formatted version. I apologize for discombobulating the line "with peace and glory ahead." I really don't know where the chords should go for that line and the one following. Perhaps someone can repair it.

Aagh!! Pipped to the post! Well, I'm gonna put my two penn'orth in anyway, since I went to the trouble of writing it out last night. I have this song on a double album called The Weavers' Greatest Hits, and I think it's sung by Pete Seeger. I don't know what key it's on, but I do it it in C, and to hell with the piano player! It's very similar to Roger's, but not quite the same as a straight change of key. It's easier to play, at least!

If you can find it, Judy Roderick 'Ain't Nothin' But the Blues' on Columbia circa. 1965, has a superlative rendition. As a matter of fact the whole damn album is unbelievably good. Her second release, 'Woman Blue', on Vanguard, is currently available (with a couple of songs on the CD that weren't on the vinyl).

I don't know if this is any help in finding the music, but I can tell you that the words were written by Yip Harburg (of "Somewhere over the Rainbow" fame) and the tune was written by Jay Gorney. I believe the song was associated with the South African singer/jazz guitarist Al Bowley and that it was also recorded by Bing Crosby. You probably know all this already, but it may jerk someone's memory and at least it will get you to the top of the thread again! I recall Paul Downes and Phil Beer doing a lovely version of it back in the seventies.

I converted the MIDItext from John in Brisbane into a MIDI. I think the MIDI in the Digital Tradition is closer to the tune I know, and it has a tune for the verses. Still, John's interpretation has interesting aspects.

Paul Downes and Phil Beer introduced me to this song back in the seventies. Simon Mayor used to know some serious jazz chords to it. He is mainly known as a mandoline virtuoso these days, but he was always a mighty guitarist too. If Simon still lives in the Reading area, you may be able to meet him Terry.
I have always wanted to hear the version by Al Bowley, which I think was the best known in its day.

Just watched a very good thirty minute program on PBS, called The March of the Bonus Army. In it, they said this song came about because of the March. It was really good. Our American history class when I was a kid never had anything about this very early "march on Washington."

I did NOT like the rendition of it, at the very end. Some warbly woman.

I've done simple YouTube recordings of these as instrumentals - simple stuff, no vocals - just for fun. Links at my website.
