Old Time Banjo Goes 'Open Source'

Patrick Costello (the author) posted the following note on the old-time news group. I think some Mudcatters will find it useful and interesting.

Pat Costello is a fine banjoist/guitarist from Criswell, Maryland. He and his father have run web banjo instruction for free for years, and he is a generous, openhanded (though sometimes irascible) teacher and propagandist for the banjo, and old time music in general.

He is also a Zen devotee, and I assume Tao too. I have done no more than a quick look at the book on his site, but I have heard wonderful things about it from those who have the hard copy book.

The stories at the very end of the book are worth reading. The instructional stuff is good too, but the stories are great.

The book is very well written and his stories enjoyable. I only wish he would mention his sources/recordings of the transcriptions and encourage the reader to listen to develop the ear. I know people who learn soley by transcriptions and get locked into that method.

A recording won't help your ear. For that you've got to get out and jam.

Glad you guys are getting a kick out of the book. I'll be releasing the guitar book under the same license in a few weeks.

Hi, Guest-anvil.
Did you click the TAO link near the beginning of this thread?

When you get on that page, look under the blue rectangle on the right side..there's a thing to click for free stuff.
Is that what you want?

Leadfingers has understated it - he's definitely got it.

This is Patrick Costello's freebie site, slightly hidden but still available. I never touched a banjo, but I find the book useful for my general education. Thanks a lot, Patrick Costello!

All of my books - The How ans the Tao of Old Time Banjo, A Book of Five Strings, The Outlaws & Scalawags Songbook, The How and the Tao of Folk Guitar and the recently published Songs For Sunday have been released online under Creative Commons licenses.

I keep a directory of my free instructional material at http://dailyfrail.com/free-books-videos/. Since the books are CC-licensed other sites have posted them as well.

I should also add that some of my books have been adapted to work with a braille display.

In addition to the books and audio workshops there are currently 329 video workshops on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/Dobro33H

There have been a few attempts at indexing and cataloging my entire body of work, but I have been teaching music over the Internet since 1997 and there is just too much material to sort through. A Google search for "Patrick Costello banjo" (or guitar, ukulele and harmonica) will turn up a lot of links.

Hope this helps.
