Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go with Friday on Saturday Night?
Words by Sam M. Lewis and Joe Young; music by George W. Meyer, 1916
as sung by Al Jolson

Over a thousand years, or maybe more
Out on an island on a lonely shore
Robinson Crusoe landed one fine day
No rent to pay
No wife to obey.
His good man Friday was his only friend
He didn't borrow or lend.
They built a little hut
Lived there till Friday, but
Saturday night it was shut.

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
Every Saturday night they would start in to roam
And on Sunday morning they'd come staggering home.
They went hunting for rabbits when the weather grew colder
But Crusoe came home with a hare on his shoulder.
Now, where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?

Robinson Crusoe was a good old scout.
Robinson Crusoe knew his way about.
He'd go out hunting chickens now and then
But he knew when
He was chasing a hen.
Once he told Friday, "You must stay at home
I've got to go out alone".
Friday felt very blue
He said, "It's wrong of you
Couldn't you fix it for two?"

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
One fine Saturday night they had nothing to do
So they started counting all the girlies they knew.
Friday counted to thirteen, and Crusoe said, "Brother,
You know, thirteen's unlucky. Let's go get another."
So, where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?

Where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?
Every Saturday night they would start in to roam
And on Sunday morning they'd come staggering home.
On this island lived wild men in cannibal trimmin'
And you know where there are wild men, there must be wild women.
So, where did Robinson Crusoe go with Friday on Saturday night?

The dance was a--are you ready for this? I mean really ready? Ok, I'll start over. There was only one footprint because the dance was a HOP!

Hoold the applause, PLEASE. Modesty forbids.

Max:

There's a western swing version of this, c1946, by Texas Jim Lewis, at the Record Lady site.
http://recordlady.webgcs.com/main2.htm

It's in "Real Country" page 1. You need the Real Player or equivalent.

My mother taught me this song when I was about seven, but she didn't know the verses. Is there an Mp3 or midi? (I'm one of those people for whom sheet music is hieroglyphics.)

I've been aquiring audio archives in MP3 format of the Dr. Demento radio shows through a group I belong to on Yahoo and I recently received a show with this very song on it. I plan to edit the song from the show and when it's completed I'd be happy to share it via email with any of you who posted here. I don't know how large it will be. It will be in MP3 and I could further compress it with winzip, if needed. I'll keep you posted.

Duane.

Since the Record Lady is, sadly gone, here's an Edison cylinder by the great Billy Murray from 1916, at UCSB:

http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/mp3s/1000/1391/cusb-cyl1391d.mp3

It's a download of about 3 or 4 MB, and pretty decent quality considering it's a 1916 cylinder.

Interested parties who don't know this site might wanna explore it a bit further. There's some interesting stuff on hand.

An update: I just successfully edited the song from the show file and it's just under 3 mb as an MP3 file. It's the 1916 version sung by Al Jolson.

In another thread, somebody named Jim asked for chords for this song. Anybody?
If you can lead me to a tune I can post, that would be nice.

There's a copy of the sheet music at the Levy Collection but it seems unwilling to let me post a link to it.

Go to this page and do a search for "Crusoe." It's the first item that comes up, followed by some other songs from the show.

Was going to post you a midi - but already done - in various formats through the U.S. Library of Congress. Fun, vampy, semi-ragtime, bar-room piece.

How grand to hear about this song. I performed it twice a day for two weeks each summer when I played with the Sadie Green Sales Ragtime Jug Band at the Knoebel's Park in Elysberg PA. I don't know where Tim and David learned this song. I found it was better to ask no questions. They sang slightly different lyrics but it was a real crowd pleaser. I have always associated it with those novelty tunes my father used to sing in the car. I remember "Lena is the Queena Palestina, Just Because She Plays the Concertina" and "Did You Ever Hear Pete Go Tweet Tweet Tweet on His Piccolo" Let's see you google those.

12-Stringer - excellent!!!

Robinson - Friday - Saturday

Brings up a very clean and printable copy. Page One - thought I had it in the collection but NOPE.....who could forget that Camel's face. Page two a nice 2/4 key of F.

Desperately need to tune the piano - but this is worth honky-tonky around with until the tuner arrives.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

I first heard this done by Catfish Willie. I don't know if he's recorded it. Jackie Washington did record it on his Midnight Choo-Choo album. The notes say he learned it from Al Jolson.
