Lyr Req: Welcome Cold November (Pete Coe)

The tune for this song has been going through my head for a couple of days but I can remember almost none of the words, except that each verse ends with a variation of 'and welcome poor November.' I associate it with Sandra Kerr, but that might be wrong as well. One verse is about Guy Fawkes trying to blow up Parliament and that one ends

For I would like to do the same
And light up old November.

Its all very vague, I know, but can anyone identify the lyrics?

The song is by Pete Coe. Surpringly I can't see any threads for it, so if noone puts it up, I'll do it later.

OK, here are the words. I'll put the tune up later if I've got some time.

Many years ago, when taking this song down, I had a lot of trouble with verse 2, line 3, which for an hour or so was "Old Downy Charlie, sharp and bright", who was no doubt some mythical Cheshire folklore figure! I also sang it in the perfect setting (in duet with Herga Kitty) one crisp 1st November, a Sunday morning, at Talbot House in Poperinge, to a group largely from Herga and Maidenhead FCs, when we were staying there and visiting some of the WWI sites.

Brilliant lyrics... Ill have to see if my friend Bob has heard of it and would do it at the Boat. He does ALL AMONG THE BARLEY each week in September! Perhaps he would do that one in November.

Recorded on Pete and Chris Coe, Out of Season Out of Rhyme, Trailer LER 2098, 1976. © Leading Note Music. Another vinyl recording held incommunicado by Dave Bulmer of Celtic Music, Harrogate. Pete has tried to buy or license the material back from the current owner so that he can re-issue it himself, but without success. Bulmer apologists might take note of that.

Since November is nearly upon us, here's the tune as promised. It's barred the way I (more or less) sing it, but it's possible it should start d CA|E3..., but I haven't the recording any more to check how Pete and Chris did it. The Novembers at the end are held for short pause, which I've marked with tenuto (I don't think there's a mark for a short fermata available), but that's a matter of preference anyway, so you can make your own minds up on that.

I've never got the hang of the notation - could someone provide a midi or conventional music score for the tune? (I sang it at Herga last night, and me and another member remember different versions!)

The name for the song in question seems to be "Out of Season." The ABC file produces a D which I think sounds very odd. Do you suppose it was supposed to be an E?

Thanks Leeneia - I only have a tablet at the moment, but will try the cut and paste once I regain access to my new laptop. I've always thought of the song as "Out of season", but now see from Googling that it was listed on the album as "Welcome cold November". I used to have the vinyl version once upon a time...

Now reunited with laptop and compatible printer... I remember (and sing) the second half of the tune differently from the version given above by Mick, and don't just repeat the first line as the third! And I end the verse on B, not E, Probably a consequence of having sung the harmony....

Once upon a time there was a magazine called Songsmith......and in Songsmith 2 there are the words and music to "Welcome cold November". There are a couple of very minor differences to the text given above- e.g. 'A mist comes FALLING down the street.....'- but I think the version above is what they actually sang live and on record.

The tune was made by Chris Coe, and is in 6/4 time. Pete wrote the words.

I'd scan it but whether it would be legible and whether I could upload it is another matter. To say nothing of the copyright aspect..........copyright Leading Note.
