Old people in small cars is definately a problem but I got behind an old car today an I'm not too surew if there was a driver in it or not... From: Padre When I was a teenager living in Charleston, WV, there was a woman whose husband had bought a 1939 Buick touring car just before he died. His widow, who at this time must have been about 70 years old, would drive the car downtown every Tuesday to get her hair done. She drove at a genteel 20 MPH in the center of Quarrier Street, and was so small in that huge car that you were never sure if it was drivng itself. When she reached the parking lot near the hairderssers, she would get out and leave the car to be parked by the attendant - in so doing, she blocked the sidewalk and about 1/4 of the lane on Lee Street. |

I'm 5'2" and could not only barely see over the steering wheel, could barely turn that monster around...I learned to be very wary of dead ends. It had been in an accident (my dad drank a bit), was turquoise with one pink fender. Not a cool car! It did go fast tho, on a straight away... |

My mother wasn't more than 5 ft nothin', if that, by the time Dad died (1980) and left her with a '69 Ford LTD. Mom's been gone now for 12 years, and family friends still refer to seeing the old Ford coming, but not being able to see her anywhere. |

From: Dave Bryant I once worked with a rather strange colleague who was very (presumably genetically) "vertically challenged", and who drove a Rolls Royce. It had had modifications to the driver's seat so he could see where he was going, and to the pedals and other controls so that he could reach them. I gather Rolls Royce had made these changes without charge, rather than admit that one of their cars wasn't suitable for any driver. I must admit that I could never understand why he needed such a large car - he'd have been much better suited to a mini - or even a Fiat 500 ! |
