BS: Hot Toddy recipes?

Subject: BS: Hot Toddy recipes?
From: Cluin

Well, I knew it would happen... playing with my little nephew, him crawling all over me, coughing, sneezing and snotting away, so now I've got his cold. Besides that usually happens when a gig is coming up with the other group I play with occasionally. I felt the tickle in the throat coming on last night so I tried to head it off with a good heavey shot of rye. It works sometimes, but not this time.

Last winter, I had a pretty bad cold in the middle of a gig weekend. Came down from the first set looking and feeling like 5 pounds of shit in a 3 pound bag, so my buddy the bartender asked if I wanted a Hot Toddy. Of course I did. He made one for me while the regular patrons waited.

"Here. My grandmother's recipe. Get that in ya!" he said and slid it over.

"You're a lifesaver, Ike. Thanks."

And he was. I felt great for the second set and the rest of the night too. I asked him how he made it. He said it was hot tea, lots of honey and lemon juice (freshly squeezed), plus a good shot of Irish (and another secret ingredient he wouldn't tell me. I'd always made mine with hot water, lemon, honey and gin or whiskey, but now I use tea. I'm having one now before I turn in (got a practice tomorrow night and 2 nights playing this weekend).

Anybody else have a good hot toddy recipe suggestion?

Hot Toddy should really be based on Rum, but try adding a shot of Stone's Green Ginger Wine as the 'secret ingedient' in your recipe...

actually, zinc nasal spray is more effective, because the zinc has to come in contact with the virus.

My brother's recipe:

Dissolve a package of the original Hall's (or other) menthol-ecalyptus cough drops in a bottle of the cheapest liquor you can find. Convince yourself that if you don't get well right now you'll drink some of it.

Hot lemon tea, with honey or sugar in, add a really good slug of decent rum. For that luxurious evening drink, use spiced rum and add another good slug of green ginger wine and cardomon pod. That will clear your sinuses from your a*$£ upwards, especially if you forget and crunch up the cardomon pod. Repeat until you can't remember why you were drinking it.

My doctor's recipe (well he is Irish) - a goodly measure of a good whisky, lemon, cinnamon, cloves and honey topped up with hot water and a little ginger if required - if you have a cold and are not just drinking this for the pure pleasure of it - swallow with 2 paracetamols!

My grandma used the following recipe.

Take a clove and marinate it in a bottle of brandy (I believe she used a flask). Let it sit for about two minutes. Strain it and drink the broth.

In a ceramic mug, pour 2 or more ozs. of dark rum; add a spoonful of brown sugar, 2 cloves and a cinnamon stick. Fill with boiling water or apple cider and top with a pat of butter. When the butter has melted, stir and drink.

It's getting just about cold enough to start making these again, as a preventive.

Kinda reminds me of the story of the fella goes to his Doctor with a cold. The Doc says: " take six asprin a day, one shot of whiskey, and come back in a week." Next week he goes back. The Doc asks how he's doing? He says: "Well, I'm two days behind in my asprin and six weeks ahead in my whiskey ... and I feel great!" CHEERS, Bob

Hah! Preventive medicine, indeed. I think I feel winter coming on...

I'd say that the essential ingredients are boiling hot water, hard liquor*, lemon, and honey (preferable to sugar).

Adding some kind of aromatic spice like clove, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, etc., is probably a plus because it'll clear your sinuses.

I throw in a teabag myself sometimes (especially mornings when I'll be staying home sick), but I suspect that brewing tea into a hot toddy might be counterproductive, because the water inevitably cools down during the brewing process. Maybe it's better to omit the tea and get the stuff into yourself while it's still really hot.

* While I may *prefer* Irish whiskey as the "active ingredient," with dark rum a close second, I can't believe it makes much difference if you use rye or bourbon or Scotch instead, or even (horrors!) gin or vodka. For most people, whatever liquor they like best will be what's most often available in their house, and that should be good enough.

Liz, you're right -- gin would not be a good idea. I guess there's good reason that tradition demands either whisk(e)y or rum be used for a decent Hot Toddy.

Sloe gin! I had forgotten all about that vile stuff, since I got really sick drinking too much of it one night back in 1973. I shouldn't think you'd need *any* added sweetener with that!

Hiya !

What we use for a hot Irish whiskey - the same I believe as the 'hot toddy' you ask about is quite simple ;

Warm a glass (so as not to break it later)
Into it put :

A tea-spoonful of sugar
A slice of lemon - studded with 3 or 4 cloves
A shot of whiskey (we use 1/4 gill measures in our pubs - but a generous hand is not bad...)
Pour on boiling water

Drink slowly - sleep well !

Hope you're better soon !

When my uncle was a young medical resident and his daughter was still a baby back in the early '60s, she had a horrible cold and was, of course, too young for any of the usual remedies. He asked an older doctor for advice. He suggested equal parts of honey, lemon and brandy, warm. Worked for my cousin and it still works wonders on me, especially for throat afflictions. Of course, after sipping it awhile you don't CARE if you still have the cold!

Feeling a little better today, but still a ways to go. Yep, I think I'll try adding some mulling spices from my hoard to the drink tonight. Thanks, all.

A couple of years ago, just before St Pat's Day (always seem to develop a cold just before then too) I was feeling pretty rough, with not much voice, when a bandmate suggested I stop and get some fresh ginger root, mash it a bit and boil it up and drink the broth hot. He claimed that would sort me out.

I followed his advioce and I can tell you I've taste only a couple of things more vile than that sludge in my day, but my mind and tastebuds have blocked them out of memory in self-defence. Oh, and it didn't help at all either.

If you really want to add tea, use Green Tea - more antioxidants.

Another useful thing is real Apple Cider Vinegar (fermented from cider, not a mixture of apple juice and vinegar!) - one teaspoon in a warm glass of water, if you want, add honey, citrus juice (lime preferable to lemon) - ginger is also good for the digestion/throat.

I guess this joke belongs here:

Cure for the cold

When Pat and Mike met each other on the street one day, Pat noticed that Mike had a terrible cold. "Have you seen a doctor about that cold?" he asked.

"No," said Mike, "But I probably should. Do you know a good doctor?" Pat gave him the name of his own doctor and assured him that he'd be in good hands.

About a week later, they met again and Pat wasn't sure if the cold was really better. "Did you see my doctor?" Pat inquired.

"Oh, yeah," Mike replied. He was a really nice guy!"

"Well, did he give you something to help your cold"?

"Sure did!" Mike answered, somewhat enthusiastically. "He told me to drink a big glass of fresh orange juice after a hot bath."

"Well, did it help?" Pat asked hesitantly.

"How do I know?" Mike retorted. "I haven't even finished drinking the bath yet!"

LOL, JennyO !

A version of hot toddy on sale at a local pub:

50 mm dark rum (Lamb's Navy, or Bootlegger)
1 sachet brown sugar
25 mm Vimto (I am not joking - this is the secret ingredient)
Top up with boiling water, add a slice of lemon

Vimto, for non-UK 'Catters is a fruit-flavoured drink. It is the punch-line in thousands of jokes about the dyslexic rock star who sold his soul to Santa, and choked on his own Vimto.

Nobody seems to have looked suspiciously at their hot toddy and said, "'Ere ! This tastes like a boiled sweet !"

My personal rhinovirus cure (and voice saver for outside chanty gigs on the Hyde Street Pier in the wintertime):

Boggie Delight

Heat a mug of cranberry juice cocktail -- not cranberry-raspberry or any of those, just cranberry joice cocktail -- until it's simmering hot. Add plenty of gin (yes, gin is fine for this application), then squeeze and drop in a thick slice of lemon.

Savor. Curl toes.

(For pier version, multiply by several and put in a pre-warmed thermos. Share judiciously.)

You need the honey for your throat and to offset the lemon, the fresh-squeezed lemon for the vitamin C and to offset the honey, the tea for the caffeine, and the whisky to drown the virus. Works a treat especially if you alternate with very hot peppers. When I feel a cold coming on, I have very hot soup (hot temp and hot peppers) at lunch and a hot toddy after dinner, and the cold never materializes.

Don't use sugar. There's a reason why many of the recipes mention honey instead, y'know. Lemon juice can be replaced by lime (yep, vitamin C is the key ingredient). And brandy works as well as whisky (blended, not single malt!) or rum, depending on your taste. I wouldn't use clear spirit such as gin or vodka, though.

The key thing, though, is that it should be piping hot. It's not a drink, it's a sip! Make it with freshly boiled water, then slap the glass in the microwave. If you don't need a spare towel, or a sock wrapped round the glass, to hold it, you haven't made it hot enough! Sip & keep sipping 'til it's gone, but sip, quickly & continually.

If you can drink it, you made it wrong or were too slow consuming...

Hadn't heard of gin with cranberry, but vodka and cranberry is a fairly popular mixed drink here in the States, sometimes called a "Cape Cod" (presumably because most cranberries in the US are grown in eastern Massachusetts). Often garnished with lemon, just like ClaireBear's "Boggy Delight."

I never thought of serving it hot, but it sounds like an excellent hot toddy. Cranberry is noted for its medicinal properties -- good for any kind of infection.

Raedwulf is right about the temperature -- gotta be HOT!

I generally use a mug or coffee cup rather than a glass for that very reason. You don't need a potholder to grasp a mug/cup by the handle -- it's *designed* for drinking hot liquids.

Why is blended whisk(e)y OK but not single malt?

Very HOT Toddy

1 Tbsp lighter fluid
1 lighter
1 Quart of whiskey
1 quartered lemon

Gargle with lighter fluid and expectorate. Ignite your mouth. Put out the flames by drinking the whiskey. Use the lemon to find where you have nasty burns.

Surely boiling it to buggery will destroy any vitamin C that may still remain in the lemon?

I made one once that was a bit different. I got the honey mixed up with the golden syrup (both in squeezy bottles) - terrible with whiskey but rather nice with rum....

Any one else remember the cherry flavoured cough mixture you were fed by your mum in the 1960's/70's?

LTS: Did they have "Cheracol" in your part of the world? That was the mother-administrated cough medicine of choice during my New Jersey 1950s childhood. I can still taste it!

Mrrzy: You're absolutely right -- squeeze and drop your lemon wedge into the hot drink, don't put the lemon in first and then heat.

Readwulf: I'm still wondering why you rule out the use of single-malts in hot toddies. In another current thread ("Song about 'glens'"), I've been advised to avoid blended Scotch whiskys at all costs, and to drink *only* single malts -- but in that context, we're not discussing medicinal values or high temperatures.

The "Hot Whisky" as served in any Irish Pub (one in Ireland) will certainly improve one's sense of well-being, if it's been impaired. Been there, done that.

Thanksgiving Day, 1968: Plans afoot for my first time to fix The Dinner and have other family members come to visit. Did a LOT of prepwork the day before. Just needed to pop out of bed on the day and start putting stuff in the oven/pots and pans. Hah!!! Woke up with the galloping eppizoodick, hurt in places on my bod that don't really exist. Hubby leaps up, pulling on clothes as he flies out the door. Returns in about an hour -- found an open liquor store on Thanksgiving Day, in a dry county!! And people say there is no God. He had a bottle of what we started calling "Dr. Beam's Magic Elixir of Life" that day (90proof). He made me a Hot Toddy -- whisky, honey, whole cloves, boiling water, lemon slice. By the end of the first half of the dose (aka first mug) I had my legs over the side of the bed and 'lowed as how I wasn't feeling as bad as earlier. Second half of the dose is carried in to me and before I'd half finished it I was "...out in that kitchen and rattle those pots and pans". By the time my brother-in-law and his wife arrived I didn't know what pain was. Dinner was ready, the food was surprisingly good, and a good time was had by all.

Cloves have anti-(septic? bacterial?) properties. That's what does the magic. Right??? Tw

Liz - No-one has advocated boiling the Toddy! The instruction is to make it as hot as you possibly can. Consequently, I recommend flashing it, as necessary, to bring it up to heat once it's mixed. As to "lemon wedge", a waste. Juice of a lemon, boyzngurls, a whole lemon! Or lime. A wedge is merely cosmetic & will do you very little good. This is medicine we're talking about, not a damn cocktail!

Poppa - Single malt is drinking whisky. It's made to be drunk & enjoyed for itself & its own flavour. Add water, if desired (hot or cold), but nothing else. It also, as a rule, costs 2-3 times as much as blended whisky. Blended whisky is made from those malts that aren't good enough to be drunk as singles. Because they are blended to even out irregularities in flavour, it happens that they also blend well with other drinks.

If you want to drink a Whisky Mac (whisky & ginger wine), you don't Mac a single. Whisky & coke/lemonade/any other mixer, you use a blend. The point of singles is that they are to be appreciated for their own sake. So, since a Toddy is not only a mix, but a mix for medicinal purposes, why the hell would waste a single on it?

I can't stop you using a single malt for a Toddy, but you're wasting money & good whisky. You're not drinking the Toddy for flavour, remember. You're sipping it as hot as possible for medicinal effect! As long as your whisky isn't equivalent to meths or paint-stripper, it doesn't matter whether it's cheap or expensive...

And, if doesn't matter, why waste the more expensive whisky? Bells, for the Yookers, makes a very good Toddy, but I wouldn't drink it straight (& I'm on Claret-aged Speyside single just now...)!

Whittards the tea merchants in the UK, do a range of instant teas. Some of them are very sickly, but others are very refreshing and tasty - bit heavy on the sugar side for most people's taste though.

Anyway. In the summer they brought out a tropical fruit and Malibu flavoured tea... presumably for iced tea. For winter, they have produced an instant 'hot toddy' flavoured tea with 'the flavours of whisky, honey and lemon'. It's quite tasty, but not like the real thing.

They sell for £5 each or 3 for £12. Avoid the Malibu one unless you like burping coconut for the rest of the day.
