October Shanty / Forebitter Session (NH)

The monthly session at the Press Room is coming up this Saturday at 3:30 PM. As some of our regulars, and irregulars as well, will be at the Getaway, we will have to make up for quantity with quality.

Thus far I know that Charley and Dick are coming down from Maine; Linn and I will be there. Maybe some new blood?

See you Saturday -- Tom

W should try freshen up a few songs for Micca's visit after the Getaway. Anyone know any warped songs or outrageous parodies?

Jeff is in Vancouver. I will do my best to get Barbara there, though. Bruce will be by at some point. I've also left phone messages for Kevin and Steve. Don't know if Barry's going to the Getaway or working around the house, or whatever. As far as I know, Will will be coming, camera in hand.

See yawl Saturday -- Tom

Tom-

Is it Kevin that brings the Morgan Anglo concertinas? I may be getting a early symptoms of concertina fever again. It's similar to "pick-up fever" and there may be only one cure.

Kevin plays banjo and guitar. You're probably thinking of Ken Coles who has a Morse concertina.

I think you'd best take the "cure."

Tom-

Maybe I could just steal Ken's, but that would be wrong...

See you tomorrow!

Well, that was different!

I hadn't expected such an elaborate videotaping production at yesterday's session. What with the lights (first time we'd ever seen that corner of The Press Room clearly) and being in a semi-circle looking AWAY from the audience . . . different. I think I was expecting a mobile camera.

Music was grand, though, and we could actually hear clearly (they turned the hum of the smoke-eaters off and asked the kitchen to keep it down a bit, I think) and be HEARD clearly.

Most of the listeners, though, were sitting at the bar and, I think they were actually listening because they applauded at the end of songs. (Being heard at the bar is sort of a first, too.)

We wrapped early as singers drifted away to other commitments -- we ended just before a raucous 30-member wedding party arrived.

Different, but fun.

Linn-

It was interesting, all the lighting and the camera, and I thought Will Norris and his crew did a good job of communicating with everyone before recording this "pilot" of traditional shanty singing at the Press Room. Lord knows where this project ends up but we might just be pleasantly surprised. My only regret is the number of good traditonal style singers who were unavoidably absent on Saturday. I hope there's a second round with lots of lead time.

We did actually sing a number of traditional sea shanties as well!

Dick Dufresne was certainly in good voice as were Tom, Linn, Keven, Bruce, Dave and Carol. I can't hear myself when I sing but inside my head it generally sounds good. Loved Kevin and Bruce's singing of Gordon Bok's "Old Fat Boat."
