Lyr Req: Mr. & Mississippi (Patti Page)

Subject: Lyr Req: Mr. & Mississippi (Patti Page)
From: Rabbi-Sol

Patti Page recorded this song in the 1950s, about somone living on a riverboat on the Mississippi. I only remember the chorus.

                I've been gone to London
                I've been gone to Rome
                But Mr. and Mississippi
                Made me feel at home

Anyone who remembers the complete song, please help me out.

I can't recall my mother
I don't remember dad
Mister and Mississippi was all I ever had
Oh, I was born to wander
I was born to roam
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home

My cradle was the river
My school a river boat
My teacher was a gambler
The slickest one afloat
My teacher was a gambler
The slickest one afloat
He taught me not to gamble on a petticoat

Oh, I was born to wander
I was born to roam
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home

Oh, darlin' how I love you
What more is there to say
I love you like a barefoot girl
Loves the summer day
The way a wanderin' gypsy
Loves the changing sea
Just like the restless river
Loves old New Orleans

I love a tiny village
A quiet country town
A house, a little garden
With kiddies runnin' 'round
You'd be a faithful husband
I'd be a trusty friend
Until I heard that steamboat
Comin' 'round the bend

Oh, I was born to wander
I was born to roam
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home

Oh, I was born to wander
I was born to roam
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home

Thank you Sorcha. Would you by any chance know the exact year the song was written and who the author was ?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE RESERVE'S LAMENT (from Oscar Brand)
From: Lighter

USMC pilots in the Korean War created their own parody of this song.
Here are the words of Oscar Brand's adaptation from his 1960 Elektra album "Tell It to the Marines." (IIRC, Brand made only minor changes to the original.) (From http://www.gyrene.com)

CONTAINS SOME STRONG LANGUAGE

THE RESERVE'S LAMENT

We won't forget Korea and we can't forget old Guam
For Syngman Rhee and Stalin, they made us feel at home
They saved their biggest fireworks until the Marine Reserves came through
And all we got was a crock of turds from you and you and you.

The mortars were terrific and the small arms were intense
The flyboys bombed the front lines and the gobs stood on the fence
The regulars took the desk jobs, the Reserves were called in mass
And they knew that the Marine Reserves were there to save their ass.

Then Congress sent a tour around and they loaded up with Scotch
While they were really living, we had forties up the crotch
They cried, let's kill the bastards, let's drive them to their knees
But their weren't any Congressmen in the list of casualties.

We love you dear old U.S.A. with all our aching hearts
That why we joined the damned Reserves and tried to do our parts
And we won't cry or squawk because we're fighting all alone
Someday the regulars may come and then we'll all go home.

I'm going to raise a family when this cruel war is through
I hope I'll have a bouncing boy to tell my stories to
But if someday when he grows up he joins the Marine Reserves
I'll kick his ass from dawn to dusk 'cause that's what he'll deserve.

Lighter,

This parody that you just posted sounds like it would be very appropriate to what is happening in present day Iraq. If someone would just change the lyrics a little this song could be brought up to date.

Tennessee Ernie Ford also made a popular recording of this song. The lyrics are given below. Of course, it's written from a man's point of view, so the words relevant to gender are different.

There is an arrangement with chords on this page: http://www.jbott.com/mstrmis1.html

MISTER AND MISSISSIPPI
Words and Music by Irving Gordon

1. I can't recall my mother. I don't remember Dad.
Mister and Mississippi was all I ever had.
Oh, I was born to wander. Oh, I was born to roam;
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home.

CHORUS: Oh, I was born to wander. Oh, I was born to roam;
And Mister and Mississippi made me feel at home.

2. My cradle was the river, my school a river boat.
My teacher was a gambler, the slickest one afloat.
My teacher was a gambler, the slickest one afloat.
He taught me not to gamble on a petticoat.

3. Oh, Betty Mae, I love you. I love you, Betty Mae.
I love you like a barefoot boy loves a summer day,
The way a wand'ring gypsy loves the changing scenes,
Just like the restless river loves old New Orleans.

4. I'd love a tiny village, a quite country town,
A house, a little garden, with kiddies runnin' 'round.
I'd be a faithful husband. I'd be a trusting friend
Until I heard that steamboat comin' 'round the bend.
