14 Oct 04 - 07:36 PM (#1297305) Subject: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: Shanghaiceltic I have a CD-RW combo drive which has just started to misbehave. I formatted a cd-rom to transfer some photos from my hard disc. All the files had valid file names. I could see the files being transferred and then after about 20 had moved across the process suddenly stopped. I repeated the process with a new disc bu this time doing it one at a time. I could see the files on the cd-rom and then again after about 20 had been moved the window which previously contained a list of files went blank. I again repeated this with yet another fresh cd-rom and tried to transfer some file that were different from the previous files. Same thing. Any ideas? |

Also, you do not have to "format" a CDR. If you can describe what Burner software you have, the steps you took and the options taken, there are enough people here to be able to suggest what may be wrong. |

15 Oct 04 - 08:23 AM (#1297747) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: Mary in Kentucky I'm interested too! (the answers, that is) I had trouble with mine, and manually tweaking the buffer helped for awhile. After I carefully read the requirements, I realized that I didn't have enough RAM. Then I (actually my son-in-law) installed more RAM, and it worked for a short time. Now I have the same problem...it stops while trying to write a CD, and it says there is an unexpected error. It's Nero, but don't anybody spend a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this one. I'll call in some help (my son-in law). |

15 Oct 04 - 06:17 PM (#1298200) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: Shanghaiceltic The software I am using is Roxio Easy CD Creator. If I do not format the CD rom I cannot 'see' it in the drive and transfer files to it. I also have Musicmatch Jukebox for making ausio cd's and with that I do not seem to have to format. I am puzzled. I will uninstall and install the programe. |

15 Oct 04 - 07:15 PM (#1298236) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: Abby Sale You can format a CD-RW and then simply use any method of dragging files to the CD - Windows Explorer, eg. same as you would to a Floppy. I don't think there's much point of formatting a CD-R, thouggh. Or even if you can. Try instead using your "Easy CD Creator" section of Roxio to burn a Data disk in the regular way, without formatting. If that don't work, there may well be something wrong with the drive. I have my own problems. Also using Roxio Easy (and also reluctant to spend the $70 to upgrade) I use it to format then use MS Backup for regular data backups. That works fine but after two or three Diffderential backups, the CD "freezes." The !@#$%^& computer suddenly says they are "Write Protected" which, of course, is impossible. Usually I can copy all the data to hard drive, though, and use a new CD. Yuk. But, On This Day - Per Harry Smith and The Ballad Index, there is a liklihood that: Frankie Baker shot and killed Allen Britt (in song, often called Albert or Johnnie) in St. Louis, MO, on 10/15/1899. |

15 Oct 04 - 08:25 PM (#1298279) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: Stilly River Sage Sometimes just turning off the computer, letting it sit for a few minutes, then turning it back on can fix a problem like that. There are some free programs that now record to CDs, probably one file at a time. Look at RealOne. I don't know if it only does music, or will also do data. SRS |

15 Oct 04 - 11:43 PM (#1298366) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: JohnInKansas A fairly common difficulty, that may or may not be applicable here, is that the read/write lens in your drive may have picked up a trace of smog. Mine seems to accumulate cat hair. Sometimes a lens cleaning, using one of those CD disks with the little whiskers on it (usually under $5 US?) will get you back in operation. While it's only a "maybe it's this" thing, it's so cheap to do that it is worth keeping one of the cleaning disks around. More elaborate "cleaning kits" are available, but a run with the simple one may indicate whether this is part of your problem. John |

16 Oct 04 - 02:45 PM (#1298555) Subject: RE: Tech: CD-RW not working properly From: GUEST,Cattail (Cookieless) I'm not over certain about this, somebody else will know better, but whilst you are transfering files the program may use your TEMP directory or some other directory to store the files in, if this directory gets full it may be that which is causing the problem. It's worth checking the amount of room you have allowed for this, and increasing it if necessary, also possibly making a new directory for it, checking if the drive is full ETC. Sorry if I'm teaching my granny to suck eggs but I can't think of anything else at the moment exept that you are running out of room somewhere. Hope this may help a little. Good luck with the problem. Cattail ! |
