19 Oct 04 - 03:10 PM (#1300886) Subject: RE: Trying to find folk CDs in London(HELP!! From: GUEST,milk monitor Google 'Tower Records'(Picadilly) and see if they have what you are after in stock. The online search engine is excellent. Think it is London's biggest record store, get out at Picadilly tube and you will not be able to miss it. If they haven't.......do the same with HMV (Oxford st), just around the corner. And Virgin is worth a try too. All will tell you online what they have, to save the shoe leather. Other than that, maybe someone else can suggest some smaller independent stores that may stock your choices? |

19 Oct 04 - 03:31 PM (#1300919) Subject: RE: Trying to find folk CDs in London(HELP!! From: Chris Green You can buy Bill's latest album, which is a 36-track retrospective called "Unicorns", direct from the man himself at www.billcaddick.co.uk! I have it and by God it's good! As far as I know it's not had that much distribution, so that's probably your best bet as I haven't see it in any record stores or even on Amazon. As regards his solo stuff from the 70's and 80's it's all deleted, sadly, so unless you can find any second hand LPs, you're unlikely to get hold of it anywhere. Good luck Chris |

From: GUEST,milk monitor http://www.talkingcities.co.uk/london_pages/shopping_music.htm Forgive inability to make this a blue link. Brain turns to mush when I reach number three on any instructions. But this site will give you addresses of heaps of secondhand record stores in London....and the ones listed are all pretty big. Quite a few have a number of branches all over London, but if you are doing the British Museum you will be close to loads of them. They stock just about anything and everything, rarities and all. Every genre catered for. Just remember your A to Z and a travel card. Have a good day! |

19 Oct 04 - 04:24 PM (#1300973) Subject: RE: Trying to find folk CDs in London(HELP!! From: McGrath of Harlow Hobgoblin is your best bet. They don't just sell guitars and squeezeboxes. And at 24 Rathbone Place, they are just off Oxford Street near Tottenham Court Road, and there's a decent pub next door, and a coffee shop. (There's a map on that link.) Free Reed have just about everything, and it'd be worth giving them a ring. They haven't got a shop as such that I know of, but that needn't mean they couldn't help you. |

From: Liz the Squeak Virgin Megastore, in Tottenham Court Road, just by the underground station (opposite the Dominion Theatre - can't miss the 30ft statue of Freddie Mercury.....) has an excellent folk section on the top floor, a cafe and toilets on the bottom floor, and some pretty good bargain DVDs in the middle. 19 Oct 04 - 07:02 PM (#1301119) Subject: RE: Trying to find folk CDs in London(HELP!! From: GUEST,Hootenanny Or just down Charing Cross Road from Tottenham Court Road Tube station go to Rays Record Shop, (Upstairs in Foyles Book Store). The guys there particularly Bob Glass have been in the specialist folk/jazz record stores in London for years and are a fund of knowledge - probably cheaper that Virgin/ex-Tower too. Happy hunting |

From: breezy then there is Cecil Sharp House near camden town tube, HQ of the English Folk Dance and Song Society where I first heard Stan Rogers, in the shop downstairs. Do make a visit to the shrine That would be my 1st option. |

20 Oct 04 - 08:54 AM (#1301624) Subject: RE: Trying to find folk CDs in London(HELP!! From: treewind I don't think there is a shop in C# house any more, hasn't been for years. Hobgoblin last ran the shop there, then they moved to Rathbone place. It might be worth the trip to Camden for specialist Irish music - there used to be a scruffy shop in a road just off Parkway that had some really arcane stuff that you'd be very lucky to find elsewhere. Hobgoblin and the big stores in Oxford Street are the best bet and they're all close to each other. Anahata |
