BS: Diallers do work on broadband

I was under the impression that diallers only work with a dial-up service.
Unfortunately the new phone bill shows otherwise, to the tune of £157 plus vat

Internet properties show 'never dial', as necessary to set up broadband, but it still got out.

BT have put a bar on premium rated calls, as we were on broadband - it didn't seem necessary at the time.

Expensive mistake

Good luck to everyone else

Had you left your old modem still plugged in? I was told to remove the dial up modem connector to prevent this.

Hi Stu

Good point, but there isn't a separate modem, it's incorporated into the PC.

Cheers

I bet they can be switched-off but how to? No idea - probably in the BIOS settings (Only accesable on start-up) del or escape or F5 before the POSt checks. read the manual.

Yeah, but if the old (internal) modem is physically unplugged from the phone socket, it can't dial out. Is the old modem still physically connected to a telephone scoket?

I've never heard of any way in which scam diallers can utilise broadband technology in the way you describe.

The broadband connection is via a filter unit, and the broadband modem is plugged into this unit via a square plug. The dialup modem connection is plugged in to the filter via a rectangular BT plug. Unplug the BT style plug. (UK details)

Braodband connections cannot run through Analog modems. So if yours is plugged into the /router/modem/ BB thingy, simply unplug the old modem.

Maybe I'm a bit naive, but my Internet Explorer has a connections section within Tools where you can set your default connection which is where I chose my broadband connection when I swopped from dial-up.........

Sorry you've had such a nasty bill!

Hi My Guru always said,

Yup ....

tools > internet options > security > 'never dial'

... but it did, which I find very worrying - and passed the firewall as well, hence the warning to others.

Hi sorefingers, as I said, in my set-up, there is no old modem to unplug. The cable from phone jack plugged straight into the tower, we THOUGHT that the internet options, and a firewall would prevent such things.

I know how it got in. My other half has been transferrring his LPs onto his PC, and downloading the relvant artwork.
He had often said that the ?search engines that find the album covers he was after can land him in some nasty sites. One night in august he said had been particularly bad.
It took me weeks to get rid of the mal-ware - all with the same date as the phone calls, as it turns out.

The phone number listed on the bill is 'under investigation' by ICTSIS, hopefully, they will close it down, they must have made a fortune.

Thanks everyone

Try disabeling the dial up modem with the device manager. Then try a better AV program.

Guest, just try disconnecting the cable to your built in modem and see if broadband still works.

In the US, at least, the DSL broadband cables and the phone cables have different connectors at the PC end, so you disconnect the one when you connect the other.

Ah! I wonder if the nasty malware was able to do VOIP to place those calls across the broadband....
