Here is a song as sung by Ed McCurdy on a pre-1954 7" reel to reel tape. You can listen to the song here:

       THE CUCKOLDED HUSBAND

       Good people all attention give
          I pray you listen well
       'Tis of a jealous husband
That I now wish to tell.

       His name is not important
          Nor where he did abide
But what he did example gives
          As I will now confide

This man he had a handsome wife.
          Her he did suspect
So he bought himself a knife and gun
          His honor to protect.

Then on one night the while his wife
          Was talking with her friend
       The husband came upon them
          His honor to defend.

He took the gun that he had bought
And up to them he went
To shoot his rival's balls off
          It seems was his intent.

To shoot his rivals balls off
          Likewise his pecker too
       As any cuckolded husband
          I'm sure likewise would do

       Now if he was successful
We do not know as yet
       But even if he wasn't,
          His deed we'll not forget

Twas his purpose we should note.
          His intention we should heed.
       And take example from it
          If ever we have need.

       So husbands all attention give.
          List' well all jealous hearts
       To best your rival finally,
          Remove his working parts

       Tear the bastards privates off.
          Oh, blunt the fulman's spear.
       And of some future cuckolding
From him you will not have no fear.

This was just before or during McCurdy's "When Daliance Was In Flower" series. Does anyone know of a source for the song? It sounds very old.

Always yours,

John Mehlberg

Shouldn't "fulman" be "foeman"?

Not really. The music is certainly very old, sounds like an ancient English ballad, of the kind so old that the melody might even be of French origin (medieval). The words are clearly a later addition, to me they sound like "fake old". I mean of course they're quite old by now, but they sound like pretending to be much older. It could be a college fraternity or club song of the late '800 or early '900...

If the words were that old the language would't be modern English. I wouldn't doubt that Ed wrote the lyrics himself.

I was unable to hear the melody from the first link because it doesn't open--says the server doesn't respond.

I would not be surprised if McCurdy, a man of diverse talents, wrote the song himself. It certainly does show touches of modern along with the carefully wrought antiqueness. Bob

999 - you can hear the recording on youtube: Ed McCurdy - The Cuckolded Husband.

It sound quite modern to me; stylistically it reminds me mostly of Chastity Belt!

'perfectly wrought antiqueness'? This is unquestionably modern and makes no attempt to hide the fact. 'pecker', 'balls', 'privates'! all relatively modern.
