That was a Merle Haggard tune, though, not Lefty Frizzell--although the lyrics site doesn't tell who wrote it. It's from Merle's album "The Ultimate Collection." Site is here. Lin Artist/Band: Haggard Merle Lyrics for Song: That's The Way Love Goes I've been throwing horseshoes Over my left shoulder I've spent most all my life Searching for that four-leafed clover Yet you ran with me, Chasing my rainbows And honey I love you, too that's the way love goes. That's the way love goes, babe That's the music God made For all the world to sing Its never old; it grows Losing makes me sorry well now, "Honey, don't worry." dont you know I love you too that's the way love goes. thats the way love goes babe thats the music God made for all the world to sing it's never old it grows losin makes me sorry you say, honey dont worry i love you too thats the way love goes |

27 Oct 04 - 02:58 AM (#1308391) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: That's The Way Love Goes From: Genie Thanks, Lin. This is yet another case of a singer getting credit for the composition of another artist. Lefty Frizzell did, indeed, write the song, although Merle may have gotten more attention for his recording. Genie |

27 Oct 04 - 05:12 PM (#1308991) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: That's The Way Love Goes From: Lin in Kansas You're welcome, Genie. Good to know that Lefty wrote it. I don't think Merle would deliberately take credit for it, though--he's got so many hits that he DID write, and he seems like a pretty straight-forward person. Oddly enough, I don't remember ever hearing Lefty sing it--did he? Anyhow, they're both outstanding writers and darned good singers! Lin |

Here are the specs: THAT S THE WAY LOVE GOES BMI Work #1481739 Songwriter/Composer: FRIZZELL LEFTY BMI 10931034 ...Artists Lefty Frzzell Merle Haggard Harmony Sisters Willie Nelson Johnny Rodriguez You're right, Lin, I don't think Merle would try to take credit for it, nor does he need to. It's just that, to a lot of folks, whoever sings a song, obviously, must have composed it! Kind of sad, from the point of view of songwriters, innit? |

31 Oct 04 - 09:20 AM (#1312127) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: That's The Way Love Goes From: Genie Gene, I was responding to Lin's post that said, "...That was a Merle Haggard tune, though, not Lefty Frizzell--although the lyrics site doesn't tell who wrote it. ..." FWIW, more often than not, when I find song lyrics posted on the internet, the songwriter is either not identified at all or is mis-identified as whoever had the recording that the poster got the lyrics from. Even on CDs, it's not always easy to find the songwriter credits. |

Claimed partial song-writing credit, I mean. I seem to recall it was in a book about Hank Williams, though I wouldn't swear to it without digging the book out (something I don't have time for right now). Lin |

Lefty Frizzel also had a big hit in the early '50s with "If You Have the Money, Honey" though most only know it by Willie Nelson. |

09 Oct 07 - 06:11 PM (#2167577) Subject: That's The Way Love Goes (Lefty Frizzell) From: Genie FWIW, there's a PBS special (called "The Last Of The Breed" or something like that) featuring Willie Nelson, Ray Price, and Merle Haggard -- it seems to be a pretty recent concert and has been airing on various PBS stations this summer and fall. Merle sings the song in this concert and, if memory serves me, he does give Lefty credit as the songwriter (and as one of his main influences). As for the chords, they aren't really hard. It's just that in the key of G, that transition from Am to D7 on the phrase "horse-shoes" (or "love goes") is a bit unusual (not to mention effective). |
