Ok, let's try this one. This is related to the "Alright..." thread. I'd like some suggestions for a folk anthology I'm making for a friend. I've got all the usual suspects from the states, but how 'bout the other side?

Fairport Convention-Matty Groves
Steeleye Span-Guadete
Fern Hill-Fi Weila (They are Welsh BTW)
Jez Lowe-Glad Rags Again
Jez Lowe-My Dog Alouitious (I think that is how it is spelt)
Any Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian small pipe player)
The Black Family-Donkey Riding

Just for a starter.

Topic's superb 20-CD set :Voice of the People" would seem to be a good place to start. Unless we're restricting this to pop.

Erm well......

I would suggest...
Anthony John Clarke (Anything, the man is a master songwriter!)
Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman - Granite Mill
Malinky - Billy (Or could be William) Taylor
Lucky Bags - Come home safely to me
Allan Taylor - Some Dreams
The McCalmans - Smuggler or Gardens
The Wilson Family - Close the coalhouse door
Jez Lowe - The Parish notices
Christy Moore - Ride on
Bob Fox & Stu Luckley - The Bonny Gateshead Lass

Crikey...I'd better stop before I get too carried away!
Just a few to get you started...But it depends on how "usual" you want the suspects to be.

Muppitz x

Without wishing to start a never ending discussion about what is and isn't folk, can I suggest you take up Dick Greenhaus's suggestion. Topic's mammoth VOP collection just about says it all. Then you can add the singer/songwriter/revivalists.

And no, I am not knocking anyone.

For what it's worth, here's a few suggestions

Canadee-i-o - Nic Jones (actually anything by him, really!)
Rip The Calico - The Bothy Band
Erin-go-Bragh - Dick Gaughan
The Fox Hunt - Brass Monkey
Russian Roulette - Moving Hearts
Sorrow/Babylon - The Home Service
Company Policy - Martin Carthy

and many, many more!

Hey Chris-

I've been working on the same thing for a week. I'm trying to introduce my girlfriend to British/Irish/Canadian... Folk music. Here are some of the songs that I am including, but I'm nowhere near sure of the order.

I should also mention that I am planning this as a three tape project and that some of these songs are just ones that I like and not always the best or most defining of the artist.

Albion Country/Dance Band: Poor Old Horse
Altan: Donal Agus Morag, Tommy Peoples
Battlefield Band: Bonnie Barly-O
Peter Bellamy (from the Transports): Roll Down
Black Family: Donkey Riding
Boys of the Lough: Bretton Wedding March
De Dannan: The Arrival of the Queen of Sheeba at Galway
Fairport Convention: Matty Groves,
Holy Modal Rounders: Hey Hey Baby
House Band: Walls of Troy, Eliz Iza
Dolores Keane: Bonny Light Horseman
Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick Byker Hill, Sheep Steeler
Sarah Gray: Fidlers Green (Hard to find, Maddy Prior and Tim Hart's version is also very nice).
Morris On: I'll go Enlist for a Sailor, Cuckoos Nest
Christy Moore: Ride On, Reel in the Flickering Light
Patrick Street: Music for a found Harmonium, Holy Ground
Planxty: Cold Blow and a Rainy Night, Jolly Beggar
Maddy Prior: The Brisk Young Butcher
Silly Wizard: Roaring Donald, Jack Cuninghams Fairwell
Steeleye Span: Hills of Greenmore, All Around My Hat, Two Magicians
Andy M. Stewart: The Parish of Dunkeld
Richard Thompson: End of the Rainbow
Touchstone: Jack Hagarity or The Flowing Tide

I'm also going to use some tracks from The Bothy Band, The Watersons, Eliza Carthy, some stuff from Cape Breton...

Here are some to start. I'll probably get bored again and put some more up. Let me know what you are going with so that I can get more ideas.

Look for any of the old Cynthia Gooding recordings of Old English Folk - great stuff.

I am trying to find the Lyric and the music to the above folk song reputedly sung by the wives of fishermen as they cleaned the herring and sold them from the jetty on the Forth

Guest: normally you'd be better off starting a new thread for a query like that, however...

The song is actually called Caller Herring. A Google search will find midis and lyrics for you.

Rae Fisher has recorded a fine version.

'British Folk' is probably too broad a term to define with one compilation. Make them a few CD's with different types of Folk:

British Folk: Songs of Protest and Hardship
British Folk: The New Guns
British Folk: Folk Rock
British Folk: Shanties & Sea Songs
British Folk: Songs from the Music Hall
British Folk: Ceremonial & Ritual Songs
British Folk: Morris and Ale Songs
British Folk: Broadsides
British Folk: Of Bawd and Bluster
British Folk: In the Name of the Lord
British Folk: The Music of Ireland
British Folk: The Songs of Ireland
British Folk: Along the Towpath
British Folk: Amongst the Bonny Heather
British Folk: From the Valleys
British Folk: To Sing, Perchance to Laugh
British Folk:... Well, the list goes on, doesn't it

(Sorry, people, I went off on one then)
