It's in the DT database. Search for [Irish Lull*] or [Irish Lullaby] if you're confident of your (and our) spelling.

And it's hardly a folk song.

In the movie, The Ghost and the Darkness, Val Kilmer plays the part of Col. John H. Patterson, an Irishman. As he and Michael Douglas, the professional hunter Remington, are climbing through some hills in search of man-eating lions, Reminton hums/sings under his breath: Oh, Johnny Boy, hmmmm, hmmm, Oh, Johnny Boy.

There were only a few bars (or whatever) hummed, but I'm sure that was an Irish folksong we had to learn in grade school. Could you help me get more information on this ballad? Someone said it was an anti-war song, but I think that's incorrect. I think they're thinking about When Johnny Comes Marching Home, Hurrah, Hurrah, which is an anti-war song from our own Civil War.

Thanks

I have very mixed feelings about such questions as this one. The continuing need to refer people back to the database may make me squirm but the responses are usually great fun and highly informative.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Danny Boy.
Try putting that in brackets, like this [Danny Boy] in the box upper right, and see if that ian't the song you want. (The name may have changed in the movie.)

Thanks so much, Barbara. That was it, okay. No wonder I couldn't find it under "Johnny Boy".

Now that I've located two of them, it would be interesting to know the history behind each of them. One is pagan, and the other refers to saying an "Ave". It will give me something to do as soon as school is out.

Thanks, again.

History of "Danny Boy" is at www.standingstones.com/dannyboy.html
An ABC of "Londonderry Air" from George Petrie's original publication of it is on my website, along with some early versions of the related "Young Man's Dream" and the text of it and Ann Geddes Gilchrist's reconstructed "Londonderry Air". See Scarce Songs file at: www.erols.com/olsonw

The song you are looking for may be "Reconciliation" by Alias John Kavanagh. It is written as an allegorical unrequited love song; the parties being the North & South of Ireland. I'm sorry, but I don't have the lyrics.

Apologies for the mistake above! 'Reconciliation' is by 'Alias' Ron Kavana.
