New Tunes & Songs to Dots - Help!

I was asked by a friend, following recording of his songs, did I know how to get his tunes/songs translated into music notation - ideally for piano. Here's the rub - he wants it quick and very cheap.

I don't read music and have no idea - what's the answer mudcatters?

Jim, if he sent me a recording of his songs I could transcribe them by ear for piano, no problem.

That would require a good chunk of time and energy though ... depending on how many tunes he has. And what is meant by "very cheap"? I love helping people with their music, and I'm happy to spend an hour or two at it just for the love of it ... but a week's worth of work would be a different story. And please consider that the knowledge and experience required to do this was not acquired quickly or cheaply, by any means.

Also, there are a few computer midi programs out there that can transcribe a piece into standard notation while you play it on the keyboard. I'm not sure about other instruments or voice though. And for me, those programs have proven to be relatively useless, because you have to perform the piece PERFECTLY -- including timing -for it to print out correctly. How many of us can keep the beat perfect, just like a metronome while playing? Or produce a "perfect performance" at will? Certainly not I! I'm much faster doing it by hand.

Hi *dalylia* - thanks for your post. There are probably about 10 or 12 songs to guitar accompaniment (strummed chords mainly) - sung by 10/11 year-olds. Songs are part of a couple of plays he's written (more to follow).

We certainly DO appreciate what's involved in developing knowledge and experience like yours (you've no idea how much!). I'll put your offer to him. Another question he had was with regard to copyright - do you know how he should go about it, and likely cost?

That sounds so cool, Jim! I love theatre music for kids!

Original music (Or any other artwork) is inherently copyrighted in my country (Canada), and it costs nothing. But to prove the work is yours, you send yourself a copy through registered mail and leave it unopened. That way, you have proof of the date it was first written, should it ever be contested.

In the case of your friend, he would hold the inherent copyright for the music and lyrics, and I would hold it for any piano arrangement I'd create for him (like a dual inherent copyright). Pretty sure that's how it goes, anyway - if you're not Canadian you might want to check and make sure it's the same in your country though.

Thanks daylia - I'll pass this on. I note another thread "When is a song self-published" kicked off yesterday which will no doubt give some clues.
