Review: The Now Show, Radio4 UK

Listened to this excellent show tonight, and near the end they did a song called 'Let's have a minutes noise for John Peel' You have to hear it to appreciate it, but it brought a tear to my eye. What a wonderful piece of lateral thinking, what else would you have as a memorial tribute for a man who played his sort of stuff. The show will be repeated tomorrow lunchtime, or you can hear it via Listen Again on the Radio4 website.
Thanks John.

Hi, John.

Heard the programme myself this evening with very much the same emotions as yours - grabbed my old Guild and did a reasonable fingerstyle approximation of the accompaniment after it had finished.

Might try to tape it tomorrow and do the job properly - it would be nice to do something in JP's memory.
Brilliantly written IMHO.

A Minutes Noise
The Now Show Team(BBC)

Let's have a minutes noise
From all the girls and boys
Who understand that they lost
A friend the other day cos'
To have a minutes silence
Somehow would be wrong
Let's have a minutes noise for John

Let's have a minutes row
From everyone remembrin' how
He soundtracked all our mis-spent youth
From teenage kids right to Home Truths
To stand in wordless contemplation's
Just not on
Let's have a minutes noise for John

(bridge)
So D.J.s rip up your play-lists
Remember better stuff exists
Now that he has left us
How do we save the world
From bloody Simon Cowell.

Let's have a minutes racket
'Tho he isn't coming back, it
Seems we understand the need
To play something loud and at the wrong speed
A minutes silence couldn't show him
How we feel
Let's have a minutes noise for Peel

Played in A

(G capo 2   G, D, C, Em.   for Folkies!)

It should be available on the BBC Website for a few more days.

I read a letter in, I think The Times, where some-one had written that they thought it might be appropriate to have a minutes noise for John Peel, because of his contribution to music, rather than a minutes silence.
It was very poignant to have a song along the same lines - (perhaps the R4 team read the same letter) the same week and with the Remembrance Celebrations at the same time.

I've e-mailed POTW with a request to play it.

Leadfingers and myself were listening to it while in the chat room - hope it comes up again on PTOW - what a fitting tribute!
