I am glad that her pain has ended, but very sad she is not among us anymore. I'd just talked with her a couple of weeks ago and posted the little story she told me. Today, I'd sent her an early Christmas present with a video of my grandson, who loved his "Grandma Mary" who taught THIS grandma just where his potato hole was (nape of the neck) and exactly how to give him a great big smooch from her right there!

I also know she was pleased to have good friends with a small child who took her beloved Emily, her little dog, to live with them. She missed her, but was so happy they were a good "fit."

Oh, dammit...I hate this.

love you, Mary/Merkle...thanks so much for being here...your song seems even more appropriate now...mostly the Chorus part:

Jesus In The Clouds
By Giac

She saw Jesus in some clouds in Oklahoma,
And Elvis crossing Texas on a train.
She sees her Mama's face in every flower.
She keeps her fingers crossed and prays for rain.

Chorus
The voices, she says, are all around us,
It won't be long til Mama calls us home.
Daddy, he won't care if you come with me,
But I'll ask him, if you want, next time he phones.

She picks up strays like goats and dogs and kittens,
Who go with her across the country wide,
In a wagon pulled by two old bay mares,
But they always make it home by wintertime.

When she was young, she heard of Ferlinghetti,
With his junked out men and naked horseback queens.
She saw him and Rexroth in some cellar,
And it led her stifled mind to Manisfree.

Chorus

She has a cabin down along the river,
And says a spaceship landed in her yard.
Aliens talk to her in the popcorn,
They tell her why her years go by so hard.

She has her pride and won't accept a favor,
Or she lives on welfare, barely getting by,
But she's got a thousand stashed out in the henhouse,
To bury her real nice … when she dies.

Chorus

(guitar through verse and chorus, then…)

She saw Jesus in some clouds in Oklahoma

(guitar)

She sees her Mama's face in every flower … (fade)

May your peace be abundant and full of sweet dreams, Marydarlin'...

I am so sad tonite.........I am thankful that Mary, like Julie, is out of the pain they each endured for so long but I am selfish enough to be very saddened to no longer have so many fine folks among us.

Giac was so special. I looked forward to reading any post she contributed. Seeing her name in a thread list guaranteed I would read the thread and her post of course was most often spot on with just the right amount of humor or seriousness as required. A wise woman and a gentle and kind human(e) being. I have already missed her hilarious and often dirty jokes in my e-mail and her PM's were as special as everything else.

Christ I hate this place...........

I used to have a circle of friends and acquaintances of average or smaller size and then I came to Mudcat. Somehow this place brought so many together and many of us grew here together, getting to know each other in ways we never thought possible before. We became close in different ways but close we were....and many still are of course. But with that came the inevitable and it comes far too often to people far too good. Murray and Winters Wages and Brother Mole, the inimitable Little John Cameron, Julie who was far from being a walking eagle as her spirit always soared, and now Giac.............and of course Rick.

Yeah.....I hate this place tonite........

We shall all miss you Mary....Your wit and wisdom and your oft bawdy jokes enrichened our lives and we were all blessed and bettered for knowing you in this little village. Thank you Dear Heart for brightening so many days for me and I hope I was able to give back some of those good feelings to you. May we meet wherever the journey leads.

Just a couple of weeks ago when I spoke to my dad, I told him Mary always asked about how he was doing. This last time, she said to please tell him she listened to his tape of old cow songs a lot; that she could just put it on and it would take her to another place. I told my dad this and that she was losing out to cancer. It sure brought a tear to his eye, to know that he'd helped out someone with his music in that way, esp. when he's on the downhill side, too. Anyway, here's something about all of that which Mary sent me. I am sure she wouldn't mind my sharing it:

"It had been awhile since I listened to Sparky's tape, so I popped it in this morning. Gosh, I do so love that tape!

"It's almost like being in the room with him.

"Anyone who's not had the pure delight of hearing an older ballad singer has missed out on a lot. I was fortunate, as a child, to be around quite a few older fellas who sang and played music. My favorite, and one of the reasons I wanted to play guitar, was my aunt's husband. He was 6'6" and legally blind. He was, of all unlikely things, a bookkeeper for a coal mine. He had no vision in one eye and only 10% vision in the other. He had to hold his columns of figures within a few inches of his "good" eye.

"My aunt thought guitar music was too "country" and she wouldn't allow it in the house. He'd played since he was a child and I'm sure it was hard for him to give it up, but she was in charge. When I was very small, probably around three, I was staying at their house and he said he wanted to show me something in the attic. I was afraid of the steep, dark stairs, but climbed up after him. My aunt had walked to town and he knew she'd be gone quite awhile. He went behind some "stuff" piled on the floorless rafters under the eaves and brought out a box. When he opened the lid, there was a "Gene Autry" guitar from a mail order company, quite a cheap model, I later realized, and he'd probably had to stash change for some time to order that guitar. He'd had it sent to the coal mine and smuggled it into the house.

"He took it out of the box and tuned it, then played a Carter family rendition of "Pal of Mine." I thought I might burst open. It became a weekly event, if I was at their home on weekends, that when my aunt walked to town, he and I would go up to the attic and he'd play and sing.

So, Sparky's tape brings back those memories and I do so enjoy the "visit" with him"

About her song:

"Jesus In The Clouds is not a religious song, but in a way, it's spiritual. It's about, um, eccentric women who live alone, just a bit off to the side of the road. All the women described are, or were, real. I know them all and I'm in there, too. When it gets really cold, I always hope they have a warm place to stay. The words fell out in rapid order on just such a cold night a few years ago."

Mary was my secret santa 2 years ago & that's when I first got to know her thru her hints. My wonderful presents didn't arrive until early February & by the she had been diagnosed with cancer. We corresponded & she sent emails & lots of pictures, most of them lost in the crash a few months ago, including that pic if her wearing her Mexican hat. I sent most of her flower pics to work where they are screensavers - some are even on colleagues' machines! - & I think of her everyday when I see these beautiful pics.

I'll miss her - but at leasrt she's not in pain anymore, and Emmy has a good home.

From GIAC:
"Got an email hint today from a friend that I've used before and it worked, but I had forgotten about it.

Put water in a white plate, add a couple of drops of Lemon Fresh Joy (gag at the name, but the scent is an attractor). Mosquitoes, and some other flying biters, are attracted by both the yellow color and the scent. They drink the mixture and then drop dead, usually within about 15-feet of the plate. Also works fairly effectively with fleas.

Just thought I'd pass that on as it does seem to work."

She was practical as well as insightful.
Just went through all my PMs to see my first from Mary, Kendall, Catspaw, AllanC, Max, Pene Azul, Naemanson and some friends long gone - gnu, Spider Tom, Brendy. Thanks for reminding me Mary

Merde! I hadn't seen this thread until just now. Earlier this morning I addressed her Christmas card . . . Merde, merde, merde! At least her pain is over . . . and I'm in tears over the loss of someone I never met except here at Mudcat.

Barely knew her, and I'm the poorer for that. We PMed about bats and jobs and Divine's obit in Spanish . . .

I hope she got the last card and letter I sent a few weeks ago . . . and the iridescent wild turkey feather I added at the last moment.

I guess winter is here.

Thanks so much Laura for letting us know. My dad, Sparky, whose tape of old cow songs Mary listened to, has joined her and many others, on the 29th. Last time I spoke with her, she said she could put on his tape and it would just take her away to someplace else. My dad was still coherent enough back then, that when I told him what she'd said and that his music was helping her through this last struggle, it made him cry. I hope the two of them have met up somewhere and are singing with the rest of them.

If you happen to come back to us and have a way of posting her obituary, if there was one, we'd really appreciate that, too. Or, if there is one which we may access online. She was just so special to so many of us. I'd mailed off one last package to her the day we found out about her passing. I am sorry it didn't get sent to her in time.

Thanks again and may this virtual hug help you in your sorrow {{{{{Laura}}}}}

Per Mary's wishes she as cremated and her ashes placed with her beloved Misty. There was no formal announcement or service or obit. In lieu of flowers some of her friends here are making donations to defray creamtion cost since she had no insurance or family.
Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville Tennessee was in charge of the arrangements.
It is so nice to communicate with those of you who loved Mary as much as I did. I am so lost now that she is gone. I have spent the last few years taking her to appointments and just visiting with her that I feel I have nothing to do even though I have a husband and a grandson at home and a job.
I am sure time will help.

Laura, Mary spoke of you often and sent me a picture once that I believe is you, taking her somewhere. I know for a certainty that yours is the kind of heart we Mudcatters can't get enough of-- I recognize in you, one of us. Please know that you have a place here among us. Please consider us, if you want us, part of your extended family, too, as Mary did.

That was you who called my husband with the news, wasn't it? We thank you so much for your kindness in doing that, especially when your own burden must already have been heavy.

Your description of Mary's passing is, I think, the prettiest thing I have ever heard about her, and you know Mary's gift with words-- your description surpasses even her turn of a phrase. I had been wondering how her going was. I'm so grateful you came to tell us, and that you told us so clearly. I'm so grateful, as one who was never there for Mary as much as I wanted to be, that not only was she not alone at the last, but that it was YOU who was there. I'm glad for her, and glad for us all. She always did choose well, didn't she?

I don't know if the site's managers know of your role in Mary's life, but it might be a good thing for someone to go through her stored messages here sometime. If you want to do that, or if you want some help on that, please, let us know and I think it can be arranged. I'd also be very interested in posting some of Mary's writings, if any of her stories and essays are accessible. She had so much to share-- if it would be the right thing to do, there are many of us who would love to hear more of her thoughts and impressions on life.

But anyway-- thank you again, and again and again, from the bottom of my heart. And-- you have my phone number. Call us, anytime.

~Susan

Laura, I too have to say what a beautiful turn of phrase you used in describing Mary's passing.........."She stopped breathing here and took the next breath somewhere else." That's very powerful and the kind of strong image that makes death easier to see.

We all loved Mary and it comes as no surprise that her friends there were such wonderful folks as well. We were blessed with her presence here and want you to feel free to come here anytime as well. We talk folk music but we just plain talk a lot as well about anything and everything. Come here anytime....you are mightily welcome to pull up a keyboard and sit a spell with us.

And whenever I take that next breath somewhere else, I hope I run into Mary right away ...... and we can share the latest raunchy jokes.

In going thru Mary's things I discovered several Mudcat cds and several tape she had made and some that had been sent to her by the members of mudcat. They have been of some comfort knowing how she loved music.

An acquaintance of mine, who lives in Montana now, is trying to track down information about an acquaintance of hers. Something she said made me wonder if her friend might have been our Giac. Did Mary participate in other discussion lists, in particular, American literature discussions?
