16 Nov 04 - 02:16 PM (#1328866) Subject: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko It is hard to believe, but November 29 would have been Stan Rogers 55th birthday. It is harder to believe that Stan created such an amazing body of work and he was only 33 when he left us. We will celebrate the life and music of Stan Rogers on WFDU-FM'S TRADITIONS, this Sunday November 21 from 3 to 6pm Eastern Time. This will be a re-broadcast of the documentary that I produced which aired on the 20th anniversary of his passing in 2003. The program will include interviews from Paul Mills, and Grit Laskin and Ariel Rogers. WFDU-FM can be heard at 89.1FM in the NYC/NJ area, or you can listen online at www.wfdu.fm. |
16 Nov 04 - 02:28 PM (#1328884) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Chris Green I have a feeling that 3pm-6pm is going to be a horribly anti-social time here in the UK! Will it be archived so I can listen to it the following day at my leisure? :) |
16 Nov 04 - 02:42 PM (#1328898) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Sorry, we do not have the funds to archive our shows! I wish we could, perhaps if our fundraiser goes well in 2005! |
16 Nov 04 - 02:44 PM (#1328900) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Chris Green Bugger! Best of luck anyway! I've only recently discovered Stan Rogers and am turning into a bit of an obsessive! Cheers Chris |
16 Nov 04 - 02:48 PM (#1328907) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Nerd 3 PM-6PM shouldn't be too bad over there, db. You're about 6 hours later than us I believe. So this is 9 PM to midnight |
16 Nov 04 - 02:48 PM (#1328908) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Well, if you decide to be "anti-social" for one evening, I think you will enjoy the show! I believe that you are 5 hours behind us, so 8pm to 10pm in the UK sounds like a perfect time to get family and friends together to listen to the radio!! What could be more social than that? :) |
16 Nov 04 - 02:50 PM (#1328912) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: PoppaGator US Eastern Time is GMT minus 5 -- so 3-6 pm in NY/NJ is 10am-1pm in the UK. Sunday, late morning / early afternoon -- too anti-social? Church not out yet? Conflict with football (as in the US)? |
16 Nov 04 - 02:55 PM (#1328916) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Chris Green Sorry. I forgot you have several different timezones over there! I was looking at the one for the West Coast. Much as I like Mr Rogers, the prospect of getting up at 7am on a Sunday didn't appeal! Thanks for correcting me - I'll definitely give it a listen! Cheers guys! |
16 Nov 04 - 02:56 PM (#1328918) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko I think you have it switched PoppaGator. GMT is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Time. We do have an international clock on our website - www.wfdu.fm so people can check from anywhere in the world. |
16 Nov 04 - 02:58 PM (#1328921) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: ToulouseCruise Poppa... you have it backwards, I'm afraid.... it would be 8-11pm in Jolly Ole England |
16 Nov 04 - 03:06 PM (#1328936) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: breezy hey db look out for Dan Mckinnon when he comes over from Canada, due Aplril 2005, I already have him booked as our visiting resident, he really can do justice to Stan's songs, join the S R admirers. I feel enriched having all his material that has become available inc 'From Coffee bars to Concert Halls' Garnet is worth taking an interest in too. All the best with the show, cant it be put on cd for sale? |
16 Nov 04 - 03:16 PM (#1328957) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Unfortunately we cannot offer it as a CD. The songs are copyright and property of Fogarty's Cove. We have a license to broadcast and stream online, but not to reproduce. |
16 Nov 04 - 06:11 PM (#1329139) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: open mike see this thread about a live tribute in toronto by many of the same people as will appear in the re-broadcast of the 2003 event! I wonder why Garnet rogers is not in either of these line-ups?> |
16 Nov 04 - 08:41 PM (#1329305) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Garnet did an interview for my documentary, however there were technical issues with the recording and it was unusable. I did use some of the information that Garnet shared in the program in the narrative. Garnet has issues with the culture that grew up AFTER Stan's death. He became an icon, and folklore developed that really did not serve his memory, in Garnet's opinion. Many people also cashed in on Stan as well. Instead of remembering the music, they created an image of Stan that Garnet feels looses sight of reality. |
16 Nov 04 - 09:20 PM (#1329339) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Big Mick I just got off the telephone with Paul Mills. He called about another matter, but I mentioned this to him. He also said that they were doing a Stan Rogers tribute this Saturday, and that Dan MacKinnon will be there, along with a number of other folks. All the best, Mick |
17 Nov 04 - 07:42 AM (#1329756) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: GUEST,Guest - Chalkie Hey Big Mick, Where is this tribute show on Saturday. Saw Dan MacKinnon at this years Whitby Folk Week. 'twould be great to see him again, especially singing Stan Rogers stuff. Do you think there will be enough spaces to be able to just turn up on the night? Please don't tell me it's down south! Chalkie West Yorkshire |
17 Nov 04 - 08:51 AM (#1329833) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Big Mick Thanks, Chalkie, for reminding me that I forgot to say where it is at. I am not sure where "down south" is for you, but this is being held at Hugh's Room in Toronto. Sure wish I could go, but I have a 2 gigs in Michigan. All the best, Mick |
17 Nov 04 - 09:35 AM (#1329888) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: WFDU - Ron Olesko I forgot to mention what is probably the most exciting part of the documentary. In addition to commentary from Paul Mills, Grit Laskin and Ariel Rogers, the program will also feature numerous excerpts from a broadcast that Stan did at WFDU about a year before he died. Stan visited with Shirley Keller, a former program host on WFDU. I have used a number of cuts of Stan talking about his career and his music. Hearing him talk about the songs is a real treat! |
17 Nov 04 - 03:57 PM (#1330312) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Cluin I see that Nathan Rogers (Stan's son) has just come out with his first album, titled True Stories. According to the neews story I read, it's contemporary folk, along the same lines as the songs his father and uncle wrote. Anybody heard it yet? |
18 Nov 04 - 06:28 AM (#1330923) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Cluin Guess not. |
18 Nov 04 - 07:46 AM (#1330958) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Strollin' Johnny Looks like Nathan's a chip off the old block. Hope he sings as well as dad. S:0) |
18 Nov 04 - 08:59 AM (#1331004) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Jeri Cluin, no, I haven't heard it. I have a tape he gave me a couple of years ago that I liked, and I'll probably buy the CD if I can discover how to do that. I hope someone refreshes this thread right before the program so I don't miss it! |

19 Nov 04 - 02:17 PM (#1332603) Subject: RE: Remembering Stan Rogers - WFDU From: Ironfeather A few years ago a friend of mine in Hell's Gate, Montana sent me some tapes he had made from CD's and containing, (I think) "From Fresh Water", "Northwest Passage" and "North Atlantic Irish Folk". My friend, Buzz, claimed to have seen some similarity between my work and that of Mr. Rogers. I could not see no more than a superficial relationship between them but became an immediate fan. The tapes are worn out -- where can I buy the CD's? |
