Tech: Unknown Format

Lots of times when I open a page or music site I get a blank page with a small red X in the upper left corner. What is it and how can I open it? Jim

The little red "X" just means that it didn't download. It may have been blocked by your machine (AV, Cookies disabled, AntiSpam, AntiPopup, etc.), it may have been blocked or just lost by your ISP, or it may just be "unavailable" at the original site. The "X" is a "placeholder" that just says "it would'a been here if it had come through."

Sometimes, you can right-click on the "x" and get a "show picture" or something similar, and sometimes you can "refresh" the page to try to re-download, but most cases are "somebody else's fault" and there's little you can do about it.

It means not available. Reasons seem to be various.
I downloaded Halliwell's Nursery Rhymes of England. All the text is there, but the illustrations got the red x treatment. The illustrations can be downloaded one by one, but not together with the text.
Some Bodleian broadsides show at low magnification, but the red x comes up when the magnifier is selected. Perhaps the enlarged image was poor, or they have not processed it yet. Dunno.

Some sites have treated images of music under active copyright in that way.

In some cases, the website manager has not yet entered the information.
