I am thinking about opening a "store" on eBay to clean out the barn, the shed, the attic, the basement, and to unload some old hoards of stuff and on and on. From: Georgiansilver I have been selling on Ebay and Buying for my collections for quite some time now and find it a great way of selling, apart from the time it takes to pack the goods and post them. From: dwditty I buy more than I sell, and, while a couple of items have not been quite what I expected, I stil think it is a great way to find stuff. Unless you want to do it full time, do as GS suggested above...list a few items at a time. As a buyer, I dislike the ebay store approach (it is fun to bid). Similarly, I tend not to bid on "Buy It Now" items (unless it is something I really really want) or items with a reserve. I susggest listing the item at the minimum amount you will take for at. Chances are it will be bid up even higher. Good luck. BTW, do you have an old Gibson Model A in that stuff in the barn? dw |

If you have never bought or sold on Ebay, you are working with a real disadvantage. Smart people who buy ALWAYS READ THE FEEDBACK a person has before buying. If you have no feedback, it might be hard to sell, unless, of course, your selling something completely unique. I did some buying first and built up a good feedback and then went into the selling. Always be honest, even if you run into a problem. You'll find people are basically nice to deal with. Always specify shipping price, people always look for that. Always specify when you expect an email from the winner, and when payment is due. For instance, "The winner MUST email me within 3 days. I expect payment within 7 days." I use paypal. The money goes right to you. Sometimes as soon as the bidding ends. I love Paypal!! I use the Buy Now choice, because it can bring in immediate cash when people are in a hurry and don't want to bother waiting for a bid to end. Make it the price your hoping to get. Don't use reserve price. It's annoying. I always start the bid at the lowest price I am willing to accept. It works well. Ship the product as soon as you receive the money. Nothing will get you bad feedback like waiting to send out the product. Make sure the product is everything you say it is. If it has a dent, tell them. Show a picture of the dent if you can. Always show a picture of the product. I always add the little picture you see in the description. It's 25 cents more but I think its worth it. I can't think of anything else. Good luck. By the way, it's really fun. Don't be discourged if you don't get a bid the first time. Just lower you price a little, and have another go at it. Relist. Again. You start the price at $0.00 and put a secret "RESERVE" price that nobody knows until it's reached. I have never bid on an item with a reserve price. Too many games and downright silly. Have been buying and selling on Ebay for years..........MUCH better than having the dreaded yardsale, and gives you a better price. Conversely, if you are selling an instrument locally, Ebay will give you a reality check on the price you should sell for, or purchase for. |

I joined the local Richmond chapter and it's really great. Instead of taking things to thrift shops, you advertize on Freecyle what you want to get rid of. People interested in the item contact you by e-mail and make arrangements to come pick it up. Hence, you don't have to lug it to goodwill or whatever. You'd be amazed at the things that are offered for free! It's great. And a great way to keep landfills free of things others have a use for. I gave away an old gas fireplace insert(that still worked). I didn't have to haul it and someone else can use it. |

It's stupid to set too high a price to start, so you set a low starting price, a higher reserve, and, if you want, an even higher quick-selling price. Example. I have an Epiphone Les Paul Special, blue, that I want to sell. (I do, as it happens). I know I should get about $85 for it (before shipping), so I set a reserve of $80, a starting price of $25, and a buy-it-now price of $100. If the top bid is $75, I keep my guitar; if it's $80, I sell it. That's about it. Ebay charges an upcharge for a reserve-price auction, by the way, but it's refunded if you have to auction it again, I think -- you don't get charged twice if you try twice. Why not set the bidding price at $80 (your lowest) and see if it goes higher? Maybe it's one of those marketing techniques we were discussing on another thread. If you see a lot of bids on an item you're more likely to go in and take a look. Maybe your right. Maybe I will use reserve. You set it a real low price to attract bidders, set a secret reserve so they will bid hoping to reach the reserve, leaving lots of bids to bring in other bidders. Cool! You might have something here. They advertised at $13, and I wasn't sure whether I was buying the whole 100 yds for $13, (the bargain of the century!) or 100 yards for $13 each (OH God no!) or 1 yard for $13 (about what I'd pay in a store.) It was 1 yard for $13. Packing up I found a fur hat and a stole that my father gave my mother back in the 60s. The ensemble was called Elizabeth Taylor, which is one of the many reasons why mother never wore it. It isn't my style either, and I'd love to sell it on ebay. But I'm not sure how. Moving meant I also got rid of my collection of Bridemaids' dresses, courtesy of two friends and my sister. Hollowfox's daughter took home the last one I had to buy. It was about 12 sizes too big for her, and I'm not sure what she's going to do with it. You don't suppose she'll put it on eBay. |

Communication is the key. Regarding the use of reserves - I hate them too and often wondered why the vendor did not use their lowest acceptable price as their start point.HOWEVER, without checking my Ebay rules I think that the higher your starting price for an item the more you pay in fees. So it could be cheaper to start off low and pay for a reserve price insertion than simply inserting your minimum bid expectation.
