From: Skarlet

Searching for title and author of song.Sounds like a folk song. 1st Verse goes " the river is flowing, flowing and flowing..the river is flowing back to the sea." another verse "mother carry me, your child i will always be. mother carry me back to the sea". Any one have a clue on this one?

It's a pagan chant. I may have an author's name in a book; I'll look, but you might also try searching the singing group Libana, who perform it. The title is "The River is Flowing"' and you have all or most of the words above. Some folks sing "Father, carry me" as an alternating verse with " Mother, carry me", and some also sing "down" to the sea.
Those two, three, four line chants seem to get quickly separated from their author's names.
Blessings,
Barbara

I am looking for the whole song as well. I know that the chorus is often sung in rounds at camps and in historical productions. About 10 years ago I heard someone sing the full song but have not been able to track him or the words down. He sang the chorus as "The river is flowing, flowing and flowing. The river is flowing down to the sea. Mother carry me, a child I'll always be. Mother carry me down to the sea." During the verses he sang of a man coming home from far away (taken away to fight a war I think). He was returning to his wife and family to find them dead. The song was very tragic. If you have any leads please let me know.

Thanks
Lynne

founds this:
THE RIVER IS FLOWING

The river is flowing, flowing and growing
The river she is flowing back to the sea
Mother carry me, your child I will always be
Mother carry me, back to the sea
The moon she is glowing down upon me
Sister moon watch over me
Your child I will always be
Sister moon watch over me
Until we are free
The sun he is shining, brightly he is shining
The sun he is shining, lighting the way
Father sun, shine over me
A child I will always be
Father sun shine over me
Until we are free.

and at http://www.geocities.com/muse_of_swearing/Ophelia.html There seems to be something similar - called the Tragedie of Orphelia - Maide of Denmark.

Here are the lyrics I found:

THE RIVER SHE IS FLOWING

The river she is flowing, flowing and growing.
The river she is flowing, down to the sea.
Mother, carry me, your child I will always be.
Mother, carry me down to the sea.

The wind he is blowing, blowing and rolling
The wind he is blowing all through the trees
Gentle wind carry me, your child I will always be
Gentle wind carry me all through the trees.

The earth she is changing, changing and moving.
The earth she is changing, all through the years.
Mother Earth, carry me, your child I will always be.
Mother Earth carry me, all through the years.

The fire, he is burning, burning and glowing.
The fire he is burning, ashes to dust.
Fire carry me, your child I will always be.
Fire carry me, ashes to dust.

I wonder if someone put the chorus with a different song, or wrote a song and added that chorus.

Guest, Lynne, do you have more information about the man who sang the full song?

Helen

Re: Nigel and Seldy. I haven't seen them for about 5 years now but I remember they did an albumn called something like "Pagan Easter" which I thought a very odd title, but the music worked.

Re: "The river is flowing ..." there is another verse to this which is simply:

"The moon - she is waxing
    Waxing and waning
The moon - she is waiting for us to be free
Mother Earth carry me, a child I will always be
Mother Earth carry me, back to the sea"

    Blesséd be

I might be wrong about this but I thought it was written by Sián from The House of the Goddess in South London. It's a few years ago since she taught it to me but I do seem to remember she claimed to have wrtten it.

Quite by chance this very song is talked about on another thread at the moment: River Songs.

We have been singing this for many years, more than 25, in the Sweat Lodge. I always just assumed it was a camp song. I'll ask if anyone has a notion of where it came from.

ZanyMouse - it's not by chance at all. I searched for the song when i found alternate lyrics and bumped the thread myself.

As for authorship and origin - it's hotly debated. People say it's a new song and people say it's a trad American indian song. Others claim it's a translation of an old Irish or Welsh song. I don't choose to believe any undocumented claims. I would guess the basic verse is probably old and that the newer ones are indeed pagan additions but since I can't back it up, I would never stake any claim to that.

I do , however, have a field recording I took of a mostly wordless tune not too dissimilar to the one the gal in the Grateful Dead film sings. The woman singing it to me in 1981 was an 78 year old woman born and raised in Ireland. She told me it was a lament about blood flowing into the sea from a river after a battle and about women going through a field of blood to find the bodies of their dead husbands. She said one line was about the wives meeting a woman with long hair at the river washing blood from her skirt. She tells them their men would not be found alive - could that have been The "Washer At the Ford'? I don't know. She never gave me the written lyrics in Irish or English. I don't know what battle she was referring to or even if the song was Irish. I was still only a teen then and not very good at getting all the details when I stalked elderly people with a tape recorder.

Mind you the tune isn't identical and it has a chorus quite different, but it in playing it today, it really does sound like this river song. She did sing a few words while "Loo-Looing" it for me but all I could make out was 'Down to the sea" Some words were in Irish and those I couldn't discern at all when listening to it today. I'll have to go back over my other notebooks and see if I wrote any more down about this. It irks me that these days when i come across something like this and find that i did a sucky job at documenting it.

Hi.
Late by several years to this thread... but since I found it looking for this song, I want to share that I have just heard a most beautiful version in Hebrew. The woman singing it was explaining it is a very old song that talks about Moses and the parting of the Dead sea waters.
This song never sounded "Native American" to me. I asked in several groups, tribes and to some elders. None of them would say it was a Native American song.
You can hear the version I'm talking about here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/live/?v=330766681299653&

I was trying to reremember this song myself today. I first heard/sang it 20 some years ago. It’s been interesting reading everyones’ thoughts and knowledge of this song.
I heard and sang it as:
I can hear your heart beat, heart beat, heart beat.
I can hear your heart beat, heart beat, heart beat.
Mother carry me, child I will always be.
I can hear.....
I was happy to read more verses. Thank you

Looking for answers to the same questions so jumping into the thread a few years later… Today I found attributions to the song by Sun Bear, an Ojibwe/Chippewa teacher and New Age author. Apparently it was written in the 1970s. So that would explain the vague attributions to being “Native American“ if people forgot the author.

But it is interesting having read this thread that is also attributed as a traditional Irish melody and possibly even a Hebrew melody. So maybe it doesn’t have one specific origin and the melody came separate from the lyrics.
