NINE JOYS OF MARY

The first good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of one,
To see her own son Jesus
To suck at the breastbone.
To suck at the breastbone, O Lord,
And bless-ed may we be,
This brings tidings sweet comfort and joy, and great joy,
This brings tidings sweet comfort and joy.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of two,
To see her own son Jesus
To read the Bible through,
To read the Bible through, O Lord,
And blessed may we be,
This brings tidings sweet comfort and joy, and great joy,
This brings tidings sweet comfort and joy.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of three,
To see her own son Jesus
To make the blind to see,
To make the blind to see, O Lord,
And blessed may we be, ....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of four,
To see her own son Jesus
To say the Bible o'er,
To say the Bible o'er, O Lord,
And blessed ....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of five,
To see her own son Jesus
To raise the dead alive,
To raise the dead alive, O Lord,
And blessed ....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of six,
To see her own son Jesus
To bear the crucifix,
To bear the crucifix, O Lord,
And blessed ....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of seven,
To see her own son Jesus
To eat the bread of Heaven,
To eat the bread of heaven, O Lord,
And blessed .....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of eight,
To see her own son Jesus
To make the crooked straight,
To make the crooked straight, O Lord,
And blessed ....etc.

The next good joy that Mary had
It was the joy of nine,
To see her own son Jesus
Turn water into wine,
Turn water into wine, O Lord,
And blessed ....etc.

Sung by Mr. Wiltshire, Royston Workhouse, Cambridgeshire, August, 1907.
With music, 4/4, no. 6, pp. 8-9, Ed. Imogen Holst and Ursula Vaughan Williams, 1961, "A Yacre of Land," Sixteen Folk-Songs from the manuscript collection of Ralph Vaughan Williams, full edition. Oxford University Press.

Perhaps this should be included in the thread, "Origins, The Seven Joys of Mary," 54434: Seven Joys

Maddy Prior & June Tabor sing a different text on their album "Silly Sisters," one of the NEATEST "folk revival" albums. All Catters' lives will be improved by owning a copy. (Unsolicited testimonial.)

Prior and Tabor shortchange the listener- only seven joys!

Yes, but Prior and Tabor are the remaining two. I do not feel shortchanged.
