BS: JFK Reloaded - Assassination Video Game

Subject: BS: JFK Reloaded - Assassination Video Game
From: GUEST

Under the 'no comment' banner, from today's Boston Herald (the story is also in online news sources all over the internet):

"Outrage over JFK slay video game
By Jules Crittenden
Monday, November 22, 2004

A British firm seeking to capitalize on the anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's murder today is issuing ``JFK Reloaded,'' a purportedly educational ``docu-game'' that lets players fire the fatal shots from the Texas Book Depository over and over again.

The Internet release of the game - $9.99 per download - takes place today, the 41st anniversary of Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, Texas, by Lee Harvey Oswald.

A spokesman for the slain president's brother, Massachusetts Sen. Edward M. Kennedy called the game ``despicable.''

Presidential historian G. Calvin MacKenzie of Colby College said, ``Aside from being in incredibly bad taste, the idea of marketing it as an educational tool seems to stretch the notion of education beyond belief.''

The Glasgow-based firm Traffic said ``JFK Reloaded'' would help disprove conspiracy theories about Kennedy's death. Traffic said the game challenges players to recreate the three shots fired at JFK's car from the Texas School Book Depository. Managing director Kirk Ewing said the game would ``stimulate a younger generation of players to take an interest in this fascinating episode of American history.''

``We've created the game with the belief that Oswald was the only person that fired the shots on that day, although this recreation proves how immensely difficult his task was,'' Ewing said.

In a statement, Traffic said it was ``determined to promote the title respectfully,'' given the sensitivity of the subject.

Sen. Kennedy's spokesman, David Smith, would not comment on whether the family was taking any action to stop the game's release.

``It's despicable. There's really no further comment,'' Smith said.

MacKenzie noted that some games involving historic deaths - allowing players to re-enact major battles - arguably have the legitimate value of teaching strategy and history. But the JFK game crosses the line of decency, he said.

``It is an awful idea. I can't imagine that there is any educational value in this,'' MacKenzie said. ``The Kennedy assassination has been studied for 40 years. There have been scores of books. What could we possibly gain from a video game?''

I LOVE 'tasteless' games and will support this one in any way I can!

-IF- they 'ban' it or sue over it, they will only guarantee that it earns a revered place in Gaming History... like Carmageddon, and Grand Theft Auto....

This was an event that traumitized the nation, and ushered in the American era of political assassinations that absolutely freaked me out as a child growing up watching the president being assassinated on TV, then his assassin being assassinated on live TV, the dogs and hoses being unleashed on civil rights demonstrators, bombs blowing up little girls in church...

Nope, I don't think we are ready to divorce reality from gaming on these things yet.

What next? MLK assassination game? Blow up the three little girls in their Alabama church? Oh, I know. Let's have a game for beheading Americans and Brits...

The Wiesenthal Centre for Holocaust Studies said years ago that there was a concentration camp 'game' on the 'net available to school kids. Basically, one accrued points by killing off an ethnic group of one's choice: Muslim, Jewish, Turkish, black, etc. I know they worked hard to get it off the www. Hope the same happens with this.

It's just pixles, and electrons, and frame-rates...   It's got nothing to do with real life...

If it's got nothing to do with real life, then why make it a game, and release it on the anniversary of the assassination, claiming it's an educational game?

That's just bullshit, Clinton, and you bloody well know it.

Like I said, where does it stop? I never suggested censorship Clinton, you did.

I am opposed to censorship because of the Clinton Hammonds in this world, who will glorify the awful just to play the chase game of justifying getting their hands on what is forbidden.

But I do support ostracization and shaming of these sorts of people. Which I do to any human beings I encounter who engage in this sort of depraved shit.

These sorts of sewer rats of civilization can rot there, as far as I'm concerned.

One of the big changes I made to my copy of Carmageddon was to edit the 'heads' of people I knew and loved over those of the 'peds' in the game who are to be run down...

I, and the people involved think it's hilarious!

"But I do support ostracization and shaming of these sorts of people"
Well, I suspect we'll never be in the same room, so ostracizing me hardly matters... and shaming? You can't shame me for behavior -I- am not ashamed of...

You're welcome to your opinion... just don't expect it to affect me... any more than I expect mine to affect you....

"If it's got nothing to do with real life, then why make it a game"
Because ANYTHING can be entertainment, depending on how it's presented...

Clinton is right, there are many sick games of this type on the market. I'm not a believer that violence on TV or in literature causes violence, but there is something disturbing about a video game where you are pulling the trigger on another individual. Sure, it is only "pixles, and electrons, and frame-rates" but you are fooling yourself if you think it has "nothing to do with real life". There is a difference between watching violence and participating in it, even if it is only on a monitor. You are no longer an observer, you become a participant. This goes beyond safely getting out agression, there is something wrong here.   There are games where the violence is in self-defense as a protection from an agressor, but there is something wrong when a game gets it jollies by assassinating a helpless individual. I am sure psychologists could have a field day with this one.

Okay, so you will obviously dismiss any studies as "guess-work" and cling to your own observation of a few "people" who play these games. I guess the discussion ends right there because you won't bother to listen to anyone but yourself.

You are right, people don't NEED anything to cause violent behavior. No one ever claimed that video games were the cause of violence. But there are OTHER studies in addition to the ones I mentioned that show a rise in aggression from people who play these games.   This does not mean that everyone who plays will go out and shoot up the neighborhood, but it is not a healthy pastime.   You can kid yourself into thinking it is alright, but it is not alright for everyone. Most people can have a few beers without any problems, but for some they become monsters after their first. Violent video games are not HELPING to resolve any of the problems that cause violent behavior. They are not doing anything positive, except making money for someone who is appealing to base instincts and preying on succeptible people.

Whatever you do is your own business. I am not trying to stop anyone from playing these games. You can spend your day in front of a gaming console, typing on the internet, becoming a master of your own domain, or writing manifestos from a tar paper shack. Your business. If you ask for an opinion, you should have the courtesy of listening to it and not dismissing it simply because you have your own opinion.

What a rare treat, to be aligned with Martin G on the same side of an almost-politcal argument!

Those nasty-ass sicko violent video games may not *cause* murderous behavior, but they certainly create an environment in which some individuals become more likely to "cross the line" than they otherwise would be.

Not unlike the worst of (c)rap "music."

I just saw a documentary - Did you know that JFK was wearing a back brace when he was shot? Apparantly the first shot, through the neck, probably would not have killed him but would have made him fall over. The second shot would not have reached him. The back brace kept him upright and a sitting duck. So it was a back brace that killed him!

I must say I tend to agree it is all much ado about nothing. There are millions of people who have died in much worse circumstances. All video games, and films to a certain extent, will emulate the death of someone loved by someone else.

The only reason this is reaching the news is that it is offending the sensibilities of people who have an inflated opinion, in my mind, of the respect they should have for JFK. I was only 10 in 1963 but from what I have learned since he did not seem a very nice man anyway! Certainly not to his wife and family.

Cheers

I don't see a connection between the games and real life violence, but that also wasn't my point.

My point is that some sick mothers are making a shit load of money off the assassination. It's right up there with those hawking 9/11 souvenirs, trading in the ghoulish and depraved sorts of things, in my book.

I know people with perverse and depraved interests, like the Clintons of this world, will pay money for this shit, and that the makers of the game created it to make a buck off of them. There are sick suckers born a million a minute, and Clinton and his ilk are the suckers.

I agree these sorts of things are best off ignored, as are a few of the posters currently participating in this thread. In fact, I'm sorry I posted this thread at all, because look who it attracted.
