Lyrics are in the DT, together with Those Were The Daze (with a very different structure, but unfortunately no tune listed). This is the original Russian folk version from Volkslieder, with a slightly more pristine (*grin*) feel, compared to the Mary Hopkins song of the 60s.

Thanks Dick. Yes, we get all the US crap on our screens, but I'm not a great box watcher. I even felt guilty last night watching part of the Lewinsky/Tripp tape revelations, when I could have been working on some more tunes for the DT.

I dunno, John. "All in the Family" was a pretty good show, although I got tired of it after a while. I had a link posted here for the lyrics to the TV show song, but the source is gone. Anybody got the lyrics to post? We do have a parody in our database - Click here
What's the Russian song that was the source for "Those Were the Days, My Friend"? Are the lyrics we know a translation of the Russian song?

Kendall Morse was offended that I mentioned this song in the "So Bad It's Brilliant" thread. That reminded me of this half-finished discussion we had a while back. Can anybody tell us the history of Those Were the Days before Mary Hopkin got hold of it? Any alternate tunes or lyrics? It IS a great song and I have a lot of fun singing it, but it sure is sentimental. Last night, when we were singing the part that goes,
Through the door there came familiar laughter
I saw your face and heard you call my name
everybody shouted, "Hey, Joe!" I laughed so hard, nobody could sing the rest of the song.

An East european Gypsy group did this at Holstein's; can't remember their name, unfortunately - they were very adamant that it was an old Gypsy song and sort of dared ?McCartney to get after them -- thewy sang it in their native tongue but I had the clear impression the lyrics were the same. The tune was identical, which I can believe. I first heard it when I was a student in Germany in (mumble mumble) at a retreat, being played for a folk dance, so I believe every word.

Yep, it is an old Russian song--Once, a long time ago, I used to play in a Russian Gypsy band and we played this song, a lot, sometimes five or six times in a night(we played tables) I did not sing it, so I don't know the lyrics--the singer did it in Russian, but there are Gypsy lyrics, as well (don't know those, either) I am not a lot of help, am I?

I think I may have this stuff in a book somewhere, but it may take a while to find it--

Hello Mudcat, here's something on "Dorogoj dal'neju":

The Russian title of Those Were the Days is in English something like 'along a road, long ago' (I've also seen and heard 'D. dlinnoju' which would mean along a long road) and the idea is somewhat the same as in TWtD: the youth's in the past, it cannot be but remembered. Here's a brief translation of the version that we used to sing when studying Russian at school some 30 years ago:

travelling on a troika (=sleigh/carriage driven by three horses) with bells
flickering fires/lights in distance
if only your company, me lads
could evaporate the pining of/from my soul
ch:
long ago along a road by the light of the moon
with song that echoes into the distance
with that old semistrunnaja (=seven stringed gypsy guitar)
that used to torture me at night times

how could I without pain
remember those years that flowed away
and your silvery hands
that flew away for ever on a troika
ch

now I need nothing more
there's no way to get that troika to return
perhaps someday my beloved one
you come and meet me at my grave
ch

It is more than propable that there are additional verses still, russian - or like in this case gypsy - folk songs, too, tend to be epic in nature and three verses is maybe not enough to make a good story.

Iwan Rebroff, German singer off emigrant parents, has recorded a version with the title 'Takije dni' (=such days) which is kind of re-translated Those Were the Days in Russian, including the endless sitting and drinking in taverna etc.

Thanks for the information. I have almost never used the web, but maybe I'll pursue some question on it one of these days so as to teach myself how to. If you and Amos are looking for questions to ask folkies, how about this one, which has to do with my major writing project: Who had the ?1968 hit with "Those Were the Days, My Friend," and who wrote it (and when)?

I once heard something on NPR about the latter, which if I recall correctly is that it was actually written by a New York-based folkie in the 1940s (I imagine the mood of it relates to the Spanish Civil War), despite its identification by persons of a certain age (or not of a certain age) with the 1960s.

I'd be grateful if there is any authoritative information around the roots of this morphing marvel song!

It always sruck me when it came out that it was an amazing example of timewarping - I remember getting a sensation of being pushed forward a good few years (to about now, maybe) in order to be able to look back and feel nostalgic for the period in which I was actually living.

Which means now it becomes a matter of being nostalgic for being nostalgic...

It's a brilliant bit of song construction.

Aaarrghhyes, I should've remembered, this's happened before!! I cut&pasted from Word - I use Opera - looked fine at this end... And if I type directly with O. into this space it comes ok (as in "Dark Eyes / ¾çØ çÕàÝëÕ" thread).

Darogy Dlinayu was a Russian folk song that was set with English lyrics by Gene Raskin of New York. (Those Were the Days). He and his wife appeared as Gene and Francesca, a folk act. He was a good songwriter and penned "The Nights in the Palace of the Tsar" and "The Kretchma" which was sung by Theodore Bikel.

ps Has anybody got a clue why cut&paste&submit of Russian from MSWord -or WP for that matter- does work on IE, but not on NSc or Opera? Mind you, it shows ok locally on those as well, but as soon as submitted it turns, should I say, into an interrogative mode.
