Tune Req: Rights of Man

18 Nov 98 - 12:03 AM (#45903)
Subject: Rights Of Man - What is Tune?
From: John in Brisbane

I initially thought the tune to this song must be the great Hornpipe of the same name, but after looking at the lyrics in the DT I would now seriously doubt that. (You could try singing along to the Hornpipe tune below, but I suspect you'll end up tying a sheep-shank in your tongue and pull your tonsils out.

Could the tune be Boulavogue? It seems to have the same feel and alliteration, and it sounds pretty good. The historians will almost certainly know which pre-dated what. I look forward to your feedback.

Regards John

Sorry about the above - the PC had a minor fit!

Frank Harte recorded this lately using the air of "Anach Cuan", an old Irish lament, sung mid-tempo. I think that's the one usually used.

I'm puzzled by the "James Connolly" attribution in the DT. I'll check Frank's notes when I get a chance.

From: Martin Ryan.

Song was written by John Shiels (he mentions himself in the last verse). As a child, Shiels witnessed some of the events of the 1798 rebellion. He lived in Droghda for most of his life, dieing around 1870.

The triple rhymes are very typical of 18th C. poetry in Irish - and were much used in English also, in both traditions (see "The Orange Maid of Sligo", in the DT, for example).

You can find a MIDI version in the Lewes Favourites tunebook. It's in Volume 7 - Tune no. 30.

The tune in the Lewes Favourites is the well-known hornpipe, which it seems is NOT what we're talking about. (I'm not going to attempt to make sense of that garbage ABC above).

Anybody got the words of the song John was talking about? I can't see it in the DT and I've never heard of it before.
