03 Dec 04 - 04:46 PM (#1346713) Subject: RE: I can't find Coventry! From: Schwa Look, I've just realized that the song I'm after is the 'Coventry Jack of all trades'. I don't know what I was thinking of when I posted my original thread. However I don't want to start a new thread as that would be really embarrassing. So, if anybody reads this, please now refer to 'Coventry Jack of all trades'. I'm really sorry to all the previous responses, who have clearly been searching high and low to find words to 'I can't find Coventry' (except for Guest 'Lady Godiva' – I don't understand you). I think between us all, we can find the words to the song without drawing attention to my error. Cheerio for now. It was an easy mistake to make - don't make an issue out of it. |

04 Dec 04 - 03:54 AM (#1347038) Subject: RE: I can't find Coventry! From: GUEST,greg stephens I think Lady Godiva was pointing out that there has only ever been one reason to go to Coventry, and it has already happened, so basically there is no reason to try to find the place. |

09 Dec 04 - 07:14 AM (#1351841) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Coventry version of 'Jack of All Trades' From: GUEST,MCP In Roy Palmer's own book The Sound of History he says of the song: "In other ballads, usually entitled 'Jack of All Trades', the emphasis shifts from different towns to trades within a particular town - Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool and Dublin and others, no doubt. The theme of wandering us retained in first lines like 'I am a jolly roving blade', and the verbal dexterity of the verse seems to have them very popular. 'Dublin Jack of All Trades' remained in oral circulation until the twentieth century". (He then quotes 2 verses from the Dublin version). So in 1988 he seemed to be unaware of a Coventry version himself! The Roud Index has no mention of a Coventry version (as far as I can see) and a quick search of the Bodleian didn't find one. Perhaps you could ask Roy Palmer. (Where was the original reference?) Mick |
09 Dec 04 - 09:17 AM (#1351932) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Coventry version of 'Jack of All Trades' From: Roger the Skiffler I only know of the Birmingham version which I think was posted some years ago. I was probably the one who asked for it, having remembered Ian Campbell singing in in the 1960s. If it isn't in the Digital Tradition I can dig it out of my own lyrics archive. RtS |
