Since he wrote it, you're right RiB...they might be sorta' close.

Now personally, I would have never done cords on the City of New Orleans. The standards were a bit higher so at the very minimum, I'd go for wool blend slacks and a herringbone sports coat with elbow patches. Of course if you were on the NYC 20th Century or PRR Broadway Limiteds...well, I think dinner jackets were common in the dining and smoking cars.......never cords.

No doubt.... there will be critics within the current-day Mudcat Forum....who proclaim that THEY know the correct chording for this song ...and that THIS version doesn't work for them (however, they are too busy chatting/catting or can't/won't post their better version).....others in the Forum will debate the phrase of "old black men" and ponder the predjudices of the past....however, IF you have a small semblance of an "ear for music" you can work out the correct timing for the chord breaks. Work hard....have fun..... be safe...and I hope this helps rather than hinders your quest.

I agree with you, cords would have been a little gauche. Dinner wear would be a little over the top, however. When last in Chicago by train, The Lakeshore Limited, I found my Oshkosh B'Gosh bibs to be just the ticket when worn with my Arrow shirt, Ralph Lauren tie, Pendleton jacket, elbow patches intact. For a lid, I chose my navy-blue K-Rugged engineer's cap. A high shine on my oxblood brogues and I was set for the trip.

So few people these days appreciate the importance of proper travel attire.

Some things are holy. That's why I won't even begin to read the new lyrics. Just won't allow those new words to be injected into my brain. I'm sure they are good and scan great, but I don't want Steve's song changed forever in my head. When Fred Waring put words to the Nutcracker Suite, someone gave it to me as a gift when I was five years old. To this day, I hear all those lyrics. No offense meant Alan, but I just won't read 'em.

I think you might be making too much of the fashion issue. These days, there are clothing choices that run the gamut of fashion, from shorts and tees to knitted ensembles ... all can be trendy, all can be appropriate. I don't think one should have to limit oneself to herringbone sports coat with (or without) elbow patches, and Oshkosh B'Gosh bibs may be fine for some while others find them too confining, lacking in true expression. I think the author's original request for cords may be acceptable, under today's fashion guidelines. After all the sky's the limit - and I've seen some really classy cords on the racks for this Fall!
