Hi,

I'm trying to find the music (esp the chords) to the hymn "When a Knight won his spurs".

Anyone know them, or where I can find them?

Thanks very much!

Is this sufficient? I don't play so I haven't the foggiest idea.

There are two midi's out on the mudcat midi page as well - which are easily converted with any number of free programs to sheet music.

I found that page, and although I haven't actually tried those chords out, they don't look quite right to me somehow. I was hoping someone here would be able to point me at some sheet music....

However, the fact that midis can be converted to sheet music is news to me - I had no idea! I shall get on the case immediately. If only I'd known. What an amazing number of possibilities this opens up!

Thanks so much!

Christ! Haven't heard this since I was about eight! As far as I can remember it goes something like this

       G             C            Am         D
When a knight won his spurs in the stories of old

       G          C            D          G
He was gentle and brave he was gallant and bold

       G             (Em7)    C            D
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand

    G          C         D                G
For God and for valour he rode through the land

I put the Em7 in brackets cos it's optional - you can just stick with the G, but I remember feeling particularly rakish at that tender age dropping the occasional minor seventh in! Hope that helps!

Jim Moray's excellent CD, Sweet England features a different song (the title track) to this same tune.

According to http://www.blythpower.co.uk/lyrics/Alnwick/knight.htm

It's

Chords:
Intro./Breaks A D E
Verse/Instr. A E A D E

I wonder which is the original key/ arrangement?

Thanks
Rufus

Martin Simpson does a fantastic version of this - he took out all reference to god because he said that anyone who talked to George Bush on first name terms didn't deserve to have a song about them :)

I wish I'd seen this thread sooner, we've got a combined baptism/confirmation service on Sunday & I haven't heard this hymn since my schooldays. I would have suggested its use.

Cheers

We used to sing it to:

       C             F            G
When a Knight won his spurs in the stories of old

       C             F         C       (G)    C
He was gentle and brave, He was gallant and bold

That G is optional...repeat to fade :)

The same tune is also used for the carol 'How far is it to Bethlehem?', which is in The Oxford Book of Carols.

Wow I'd forgotten about this song, we used to sing it at school. I never really understood what it was about, until re-reading the lyrics just now. Thanks for posting
