BS: Refugee status for Americans?

Canada is hearing a refugee claim from an American serviceman who claims that innocent, Iraqi civilians are being killed.

Should this be considered valid or should he serve his time for desertion?

serve his time for desertion? Has he been tried and convicted? If he returns voluntarily then, by definition, he has not deserted.

He doesn't want to return voluntarily. He has applied for refugee status.

He's not exactly a deserter. He's already served in Afghanistan. He does't agree with all the hoopla that the Bush admin. made about Iraq being our chief enemy in the world; doesn't think we should be fighting there. So far that's what I've gathered. Part of what we fight for in this country (USA) is the right/obligation to express a difference of point-of-view/thought/opinion with our elected officials. In the oath he took at induction he swore to "...uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic...". Only later in the oath does it mention obeying orders. I believe he has earned the right to question the decisions of the administration in this area.

That said -- (sigh) -- he was a member of our armed services on active duty when he decided to seek refuge in Canada. I'm torn, but I'm not the one responsible for coping with this issue.    Tw

There is a guy who just returned from Iraq and he works in a local store. According to him, the Iraquis are being trained by our American soldiers to be policemen, and 1/3 of them desert to the other side when their training is done.Apparently the Bush administration hasn't caught on yet why they are not showing up for work.

Now all the queers that can't get married in the US will seek refugee status in Canada.

All the child molesters and sheep fuckers will be next.

Good riddance.

Being a Canadian, I figure my net worth has increased. As I said before, its easy enough to arrange a marriage. There's always pre-nuptials these days anyway. Now I can arrange a marriage with someone of the same sex. I wonder how much a marriage will be worth if the situation in the States doesn't improve?

When Hong Kong became a part of China, there were men offerring upwards to $200,000 for a marriage to a Canadian citizen.

Sure is tempting.

Most of that article was about the testimony of a former marine who was testifing, not the asylum seaker.

"Hinzman, 26, deserted his regiment in January just days before being deployed to Iraq, and fears he will be unfairly court-martialled if returned to the United States...

"Hinzman enlisted voluntarily for four years in November 2000. He was a crack infantryman with the 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, N.C., until he deserted after his application as a conscientious objector failed."
