thanks, but that means that the one I thought I got right is wrong - shucks

The clue for that one was "what a good golfer is, on average"

5,3

I put under par, but I think it could be about par now?

any thoughts?

I read a page of some of the best & cleverest crytpic crossword clues and answers in a trivia book about 20 years ago. I wrote them down on the back of two scrap library catalogue cards and kept them, but could only ever find the answers and not the clues after that.

I remember a couple of them:

Clue 1:   Orphan has neither view

Clue 2: What the Greek tailor said

(and I just found a reply from the Greek customer)

Clue 3: She, too great for words, can never have children

There were more but I can't remember them at the moment.

I think one of the best cryptic clues I came across was in The Guardian newspaper.........FIVE LETTERS....and the clue was.....

"Cries of support for a girl winning five nil".

Can you do it???
Best wishes.

To egg on = "toast" ?

£30 (9,7,3,8) = "Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras". (In UK money, £30 is also 3 x £10 notes, "three tenners".)

I'd though that, then DtGs next post looked like the answers to the clues. I can do cryptic clues, but understanding the workings of a mudcatters mind, impossible!

To second a motion is to support it, same as a second in a duel to support the protagonists. Like you however I can make no sense in trying to fit it to the rest of the clue.
However I have the same problem with all the other words that fit the letters you supplied
