Gee, I thought it was Ted Lewis (Ah_ha, is everybody happy, yes suhh) That Ted Lewis. He's the onie I remember singing it. But hell, between 1927, when it was written, and 1936 or so,when I heard it, LOTS of people must have sung it. So, Jolson wrote part of it,.

Jolson, who sung about the south, mammy and all that, never was south of D.C.

Asa Yolson should have known about steeotyping, being the son of a cantor, so why the hell didn't he NOT sing in blackface and shuffl;e around saying things like, "Yassuh Marse James, Ah sho-nuff did lak dat leftover chicken". and all that crap, Huh?

See, I can be cranky if the situation calls for it.

Love and kisses, Jody

Hello! I've been singing this song to my son and I don't know the rest. It starts:
Me and my shadow, My shadow and me, we're always together as close as can be, we make the pictures on the floor and the wall, like rabbits and dogs, and that's not all...
any takers? Seth

No, sorry to say, I've been searching for this for a while and tried combinations of all the lyrics I had. I remember seeing it as a song from peter pan (maybe an obscure performance) but it was on TV, probably the 60's.

I can't find any lyrics to suit from any Peter Pan listings on google. The only song that has "shadow" in it is "I gotta crow."

I thought the Sinatra one would be the one I remember, but the words I remember, "Me and my shadow...walking down Park Avenue..." aren't listed in his, either. It seem to me I remember Fred Astair or someone doing a great dance whilst singing this in some movie?

"Me And My Shadow"
(feat. Jonathan Wilkes)

[spoken]
[Robbie: (american accent)] Johnny and Robbie
[Jonathon:] What you talking like that for, you're from Stoke!
[Robbie:] I dunno but I can't stop here pally

Like the wallpaper sticks to the wall
Like the seashore clings to the sea
Like you'll never get rid of your shadow
You'll never get rid of me

Let all the others fight and fuss
Whatever happens, we've got us.

(Me and my shadow)
We're closer than pages that stick in a book
We're closer than ripples that flow in a brook
(Strolling down the avenue)
Wherever you find him, you'll find me, just look
Closer than a miser or the bloodhounds to Liza

Me and my shadow
We're closer than smog to all of L.A.
We're closer than Ricky to confessing he's gay??
Not a soul can bust this team in two
We stick together like glue

And when it's sleeping time
That's when we rise
We start to swing
Our clocks don't chime
What a surprise
They ring-a-ding-ding!
Happy New Year!

(Me and my shadow)
And now to repeat what I said at the start
They'll need a large crowbar to break us apart
We're alone but far from blue

Before we get finished, we'll make the town roar
We'll hit a few late spots, and then a few more
We'll wind up at Stringy's and maybe grab show
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
For my shadow and me!

[spoken]
[Jonathon:] Can we do that again
[Robbie:] No, I'm too tired
[Jonathon:] Please Rob
[Robbie:] No, I'm swung out
[Jonathon:] I'll give you some money
[Robbie:] I don't need money
[Jonathon:] What about a cup of tea
[Robbie:] Not thirsty
[Jonathon:] I'll won't tell anyone you're gay.
[Both Laugh]

Before we get finished, we'll make the town roar
We'll hit all the late spots, and then a few more
We'll wind up at Stringy's and maybe grab show
Life is gonna be we-wow-whee!
For my shadow and me!

Me And My Shadow
Music by Al Jolson and Dave Dreyer
with lyrics by Billy Rose, 1927

Me And My Shadow
Me and my shadow,
Strolling down the avenue,
Me and my shadow,
Not a soul to tell our troubles to . . .

And when it's twelve o'clock,
We climb the stair,
We never knock,
For nobody's there . . .

Just me and my shadow,
All alone and feelin' blue . . .

< instrumental bridge >

And when it's twelve o'clock,
We climb the stair,
We never knock,
For nobody's there . . .

Just me and my shadow,
All alone and feelin' blue . . .

This song has been recorded, sometimes in abridged form, by several artists in the past, including Perry Como, Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland. But in the future – three million years into the future – it is sung by the Cat in 'The End'. Thanks to Trace for sending me the rest of Billy Rose's 1927 lyrics, sung to music by Al Jolson and Dave Dreyer.

Me And My Shadow
Music by Al Jolson and Dave Dreyer
with lyrics by Billy Rose, 1927

Shades of night are falling and I'm lonely
Standing on the corner feeling blue
Sweethearts out for fun, pass me one by one
Guess I'll wind up like I always do, with only

Me and my shadow
Strolling down the avenue
Me and my shadow
Not another soul to tell our troubles to

And when it's twelve o'clock, we climb the stair
We never knock, for nobody's there
Just me and my shadow
All alone and feeling blue

When the sun sets on the far horizon
And the parlour lamps begin to glow
Jim and Jack and John, put their slippers on
They're all set but we're still on the go, so lonely

Me and my shadow
Strolling down the avenue
Me and my shadow
Not another soul to tell our troubles to

And when it's twelve o'clock, we climb the stair
We never knock, for nobody's there
Just me and my shadow
All alone and feeling blue

I did the searches and I came up with all of the above responses, but they are not the songs. the only thing I can come up with is it may have been from a local pbs broadcast of Peter Pan...I seem to remember in black and white, may have been produced in the Boston area.

Seth: There is a post in the KIDiddles Discussion Board where someone is seeking the same song and says it was on a "Peter Pan" record she had as a kid in the early 60s.

Her quote is similar to yours: "we're always together as close as can be; we make pictures on the floor and the walls, like rabbits and dogs, but that's not all." But she might know more than she posted. She's looking for the recording, not lyrics.

Googling with the phrase "Me and my shadow, my shadow and me" (in quotes) gets a few hits, but they're only brief quotes, with no explanation.

There are a couple of dozen albums with "Peter Pan" as the title, or part of the title. You can find them at allmusic. Maybe if you browse through the track lists and listen to the sound samples, you will recognize the song you're looking for.

If you come up with more information, please come back here and post it.

For what it's worth, I recall a television production of Peter Pan that had Danney Kaye as Captain Hook, but this might have been in the early 1970's. I bet there's a Peter Pan forum out there somewhere that could help on this.

Well, there are FOUR Peter Pan Broadway shows, and none has a song about a shadow. The 1907 production had one song by Jerome Kern, and the 1924 production had two Kern songs.

The third production (1950), starring Jean Arthur and Boris Karloff, had the following songs with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein:
  • My House
  • Never-land
  • Peter, Peter
  • Pirate Song
  • Plank Round
  • Who Am I?
  • Dream With Me (cut)

It's the fourth production (1954) that we're familiar with, the one starring Mary Martin (and Sandy Duncan in the 1979 revival). Music was by Jule Styne, with lyrics mostly by Betty Comden and Adolph Green:
  • Captain Hook's Waltz
  • Distant Melody
  • Never Never Land
  • Wendy

    Songs Added Later:
  • Hook's Hook
  • Youth, Joy, and Freedom
  • Oh My Mysterious Lady
  • Ugg-a-Wugg

But none of those Broadway shows have the "Shadow" song or other familiar songs.

I thought Mary Martin sang all these songs, but I guess not. The songs in Peter Pan were composed by Sammy Fain, Sammy Cahn, Frank Churchill, Winston Hibler and Ted Sears. Oliver Wallace composed the incidental music score. Interestingly, the Wikipedia article on the film makes no mention of the "Me and My Shadow" song.

Here are the songs from the 1954 Mary Martin musical:

    1. Overture
    2. Prologue
    3. Tender Shepherd
    4. I've Gotta Crow

Me and My Shadow is not from the Broadway musical PETER PAN.

Broadway composer, Billy Rose wrote it in the 1930s for his musical revue CRAZY QUILT.

PETER PAN was written in 1954 by Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh, Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne.

Peter sings "I Gotta Crow" as he does shadow hand tricks in the original Mary Martin version and then the shadow tricks disappeared for the Sandy Duncan (1979) and Cathy Rigby (1990s) versions.

I wouldn't go to sleep for my nap unless I played that album--40 odd years ago. Definitely from the '60s and not from the Broadway version.
Here are other songs I remember, besides Me & My Shadow:
I can fly, I can fly, it's as easy as pie, I can fly like a bird, I can fly. Over the ? and through the room--(something...)whirling and wheeling and feeling as high as the sky, I can fly, I can fly, I can fly.

Peter Pan, Peter Pan, who are you Peter Pan?
I'm a little boy, who never grew up, my name is Peter Pan. I'm captain of the little boys, in Never Never Never Land.
Peter Pan, Peter Pan of Never Never Never Land.

Peter also said something like: "Never have to go to school, never wear a tie, never wash my face, never comb my hair, never have to do nothin' I don't want to do...

There was a whole section of the record about the crocodile who swallowed a clock--but that part used to scare me, so I skipped it.

Then there was the rhyming part where Wendy sewed on Peter's shadow. Something like... W:I'll sew your shadow on. P: Ouch it hurts, ouch it hurts, please don't take so long. T: Be still, be still I'm almost done...there, your shadow's on. P: Thank you Wendy

Thank you for that trip down memory lane. Then there was the Ugly Duckling album...

I have that album here somewhere, after reading this I'm tearing my house apart trying to find it. I remember my mom buying it for me at a .5 & .10 store along with a Peter and the Wolf record in the 60's. Peter Pan was me and my brothers favorite record when we were kids. I could probably rememember just about every word. Wendy's lullaby was one of my favorite songs.. la la la lu la.. It was from Rocking Horse records and nothing like the Walt Disney or broadway version. My copy has some skips from scratches in it, so I was looking thru the internet to see if I could find another copy. Back to the search, it was fun to hear of others with the same memorys.

This is the one you are thinking of:

Me and my shadow, my shadow and me
    we're always together
    close as can be
We make pictures on the floors and the walls like rabbits and dogs
    but that's not all
wherever we go we have company
    me and my shadow
    My shadow and me...

    Me and me shadow,
    My shadow and me;
    We're always together
    Close as can be.

    We make pictures
On the floor and the walls,
    Like rabbits and dogs --
    And that's not all!

    Wherever we go
    We've got company --
    Me and my shadow
    My shadow and me!

I stitch & stitch, I'll sew your shadow on.
Ouch that hurts, ouch that hurts, but please my dear go on.
Be still, be still - I'm almost done.
There - your shadow is on.

Thank you Wendy. You know you'd make a wonderful mother for the lost boys.

    Who are the lost boys?

Why there the boys who never grew up. Won't you fly away w/ me & be their mother?

But I don't know how to fly.

    Hi,

My niece is afraid of her shadow and I remembered the song "Me and My Shadow" and was researching it. I found it on youtube and it is the exact one I use to listen to. Here is it:

I remember that song! The " I'm a little boy who never grew up" song. It was on an LP of a read along record. It also had a song that went " If you believe in fairies...then clap your hands (clap clap clap) If you believe in fairies then clap your hands ( clap clap clap). Tinkerbell, will get well, if you clap your hands. If you believe in faires then clap, your, hands...

This is the one I remember as well. From the 45 record, Sunshine Series, has anyone found an mp3 version for sale?

I listened to this record so often in the 60's, I could recite and sing the whole thing when I started babysitting.
Thanks for inspiring me to hunt it down - and here it is:
"A musical story of Peter Pan." Narrated by Milton Rich.
Me and my shadow, my shadow and me" is the third song.
