Christmas music on WFDU-FM - On NOW 19 Sun. Dec!!

16 Dec 04 - 11:47 PM (#1359333)
Subject: Christmas music on WFDU-FM
From: WFDU - Ron Olesko

This Sunday, December 19, I will host my annual "Christmas Party" on WFDU-FM. From 3 to 6pm Eastern Time I will be playing seasonal favorites from artists like Pete Seeger, Odetta, Nowell Sing We Clear, the Patons, Jean Ritchie, Oscar Brand, Christine Lavin, Tom Prasada-Rao, Cathie Ryan, Artisan and many, many, many others. Holiday music done in a "folk" style!

This will mark the 25th broadcast, an event that I started on the first Sunday before Christams back in 1980.   You can listen in at 89.1FM in the NYC metro area, or you can listen in on the internet at www.wfdu.fm

Hope you can join us for some seasonal cheer!

I have a recording of Robert Lurtsema reading The Night Before Christmas that I share every year. I usually air it around 5pm. If anyone has any requests, please post them here or e-mail me at wfdutraditions@aol.com . Thanks!

I'll be listening while I wrap gifts.

As usual, I'd love to hear "Juda's Land" -- or anything by Jean Ritchie.

I'm also interested in carols from around the world, but I'm not sure of the folkiness of many of them. Anything would be great.

Always enjoy your show, Ron. Thanks for the reminder. Sounds like a great lineup. I'd love to hear Christmas in the Trenches.

Tune in, folks. This is always first-rate!

What is this? I know it as Bambino Divino. The acoustic guitar is beautiful.

The album name was A Taro Patch Christmas; artist was Kataani, I think? Beautiful!

Ron,

I've missed some going in and out to remake my back steps for bad knees, but so far I am liking what I am hearing. (Tape running for later.)

As far as requests, I would only ask (for next year's planning), a little less acoustic interpretation of well-known pieces and a lot more new pieces-- since I will mine the new material to use in congregational singing in church next year.

Thanks for your work in putting all this together. What time of year do you start listening through it all? Early Christmas season for you, huh? Cool!

~Susan

I'm listening right now, and yes, we're getting the tree set up. Thanks so much for reminding us all of this. Watching my 16 year old daughter wipe away tears as she listened to Christmas in the Trenches
will be something I treasure forever. I'mwith WYSIWIG, some of the less well known pieces would be most welcome in next year's playlist. If there's not a playlist somewhere, could you please tell me where to find Oscar Brand's Burgundian Carol? Thanks for that, too. Mary

Thanks for the kind words.   I will post a copy of my playlist here either later tonight or tomorrow.   Normally I post on FOLK-DJ (www.folkradio.org) but I will gladly add it here for this special show.

I have tried to add less well known pieces in the Christmas show in the past, but I've usually met with resistance from the audience. Because this is sort of a "party" edition of the show, people have always requested favorites that everyone knows and can sing along with. I have tried to intersperse some less known songs, as I did this year, but I will remember to add more for next year.

I'll post some more later, but I just wanted to thank all of you for listening in today. It was wonderful to receive e-mails from around the country (and globe!) and I was very surprised when I gave away a CD and the caller was listening in Maine! Radio certainly has changed since I started doing this so many years ago!

Thanks again! Happy holidays!

Ron, it sounds like you have enough material for a second Christmas show! :~)

Ya know, folks, the doo-wop Christmas show following Ron's is pretty cool, too! Our little dresser-top tree is revolving and twinkling in front of the mirror, and it ALMOST feels like Christmas season, here, at last. Snowing, too. But not too much.

I realy enjoyed the Lurtsema, too, Ron. You did a nice job with the Pops behind him, although I think it would be excellent either way. Went a lot to redeeming him in my mind. I used to think he was so pompous on his classical show. This was a side of him I'd never heard and I really was impressed.

Thanks for playing the request. Next year, it'd be neat to hear some of Telynor, Mudcat's own John Peekstock and his wife. They have a Christmas CD called "Off the beaten path" which has some gorgeous, more unusual stuff on it. I LOVE the more obscure the better! Thanks for including some of those and for adding the stories of same.

GREAT show this year!

I have the Telynor CD and unfortunately I ran out of time this year. I will make some changes next year and include more obscure material and some surprises.

The Lurtsema CD is really wonderful. He also worked with the Christmas Revels and appears on one of their CD's.

I went through my tape early this AM and harvested three songs we can use in church as-is, and another one I could rework a bit. More is welcome, but this is great!

Thanks again for the show, and for being sure we knew about it. And thanks to Kat for being sure to keep the thread visible.

And SPECIAL thanks for showcasing all the artists who made the music.

A must-have request for next year-- Seamus Kennedy's Christmas CD "Goodwill to Men" is FULL of wonderful stuff. Do you have it???

Sorry for the delay in posting the playlist, as I promised.

Maryin Kentucky, I think you heard Twas on A Night Like This from the Folk-Legacy CD of the same name.

Hollowfox - your note was really touching. It is wonderful that your daughter was touched by Christmas in the Trenches. There is hope for the future!   I was tempted to follow up with Artisan's version of Mike Harding's Christmas Eve 1914, another take on the same story. Perhaps next year!

Susan - I will make a note to play Telynor and Seamus Kennedy next year. I did play Seamus on my other program, The Sunday Session.

Anyway, since someone had requested it, here is the playlist. Bill Hahn and I normally post our playlists at www.folkradio.org.

Thanks Ron.

Folks, Imade a simple MIDI of " 'Twas on a Night Like This." It should be up in the Mudcat MIDIs soon, and there is already a thread with lyrics. That thread will pop up when the MIDI is posted.
