20 Dec 04 - 04:25 PM (#1361782) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Press Room session ends around 9 p.m. -- another, what, 45-60 minutes to Sinsull's? Curmudgeon and I would LOVE to -- it's not that much further for us to Sinsull's than it is to head west to home. But . . . it entirely depends on the weather, including the temperature (as we heat with wood, so wintertime overnights get tricky and erratic). The cats can cope (even the diabetic one) but they all adamently refuse to bring in firewood or stoke the stove. (They'll sometimes answer the phone but either refuse to take messages or else they deny they know us.) Flamingo weather on New Year's Eve would be just fine . . . Linn |

29 Dec 04 - 12:35 PM (#1366803) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Ooooooooooooooooooooo!!!! Ten POUNDS of cream cheese!!! Uh, we probably won't need quite that much (but I AM a cream cheese fanatic) -- even if I put "too much" (that's a legitimate unit of measure) cream cheese in the scrambled eggs. (And, uh, "thanks" for drafting me for breakfast duty.) Curmudgeon (yelling frantically in the background) "suggests" that you have enough coffee and toast as well. (He can make the damned coffee!) So, I'm making pickled herring in sour cream sauce AND pickled herring in ice cream for Pauline . . . do I have that right? ;-) Linn |

29 Dec 04 - 01:15 PM (#1366836) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Jeri "For reasons I will explain later I have ten pounds of cream cheese in my freezer." Not later. NOW! I don't know. I'm getting over a cold - trying to, anyway. My sinuses are behaving a lot like Cadbury's Creme Eggs, but the filling in those things is runnier. (Yuck - sorry) I just got home from the Great White North (and the traffic jam between Toronto and Cornwall) at 0-tomorrow-thirty last night. Simply thinking about leaving the house again makes me tired. The invention of a matter transporter needs to be made a priority! I'm gonna get a real big scanner And scan myself, that's what I'll do Turn myself into electrons I'm gonna fax myself to you A fax is flatter than I am When I come out, here's what you do Explain to the police what happened I tried to fax myself to you. An e-mailed me might be better But the attachment will be huge, it's true I don't have DSL or cable So I'll just fax myself to you |

I thought you had to buy ten to get the price. Actually ten was the limit. DOH! I also got ten cans of white tuna and ten frozen dinners and...you get the idea. Cream cheese to take home for all who are interested. Toast, coffee, tea, bacon and sausage plus leftovers. Baked beans sounds really good Charmion. We cn throw the fruit cake at the neighbor's dog. Pickled herring was a tradition from my childhood which I prefer to forget but bring it anyway. Pickled ice cream? Your guess is as good as mine. Mead is always welcome. So is Jeri - hope you feel up to it. I will have the usual nibblies and a huge pot of curried chicken to serve over rice, salad, wine, beer, Pepsi, water, and champagne at midnight. Some pastries too. I have a guitar. Pauline has a fiddle. I know we have a squeeze box and a banjo and a piano leg coming. Anything else? Bagpipes, maybe? |

I was in bed at about a half hour before this year, and I don't think I would have been any fun at all. (Especially not after falling asleep.) I feel great today - it figures. I'm about to make chicken soup. Heather made leftover Christmas turkey soup, and it was the best soup I can remember. Should've stolen some. Now I have a craving, and I'm not roasting a flippin' turkey so I can make soup! Anyway, I hope the scrambled eggs and cream cheese is/was good. It's a beautiful day to start off 2005. I would also like to mention here and now, that there is no such thing as too much cream cheese! Cream cheese only comes in the measurements of just right or not enough. Although ten pounds might be considered pushing it (just kidding! as she ducks for cover). Thanks for the great time, good food, wonderful company and excellent music. |

01 Jan 05 - 02:17 PM (#1368838) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Brían Well, thank heavens the camera was not mine. I just downladed the pictures. For whose posterity should I send them? BTW, I got some great shots of Seamus who seems to be much to much at home with a bunch of castaways swappin' songs and yarns. I rather enjoyed Eli's song where she was able to demonstrate that you can actually rhyme something with concertina. CET's ballad was very nice. I really enjoyed swapping tunes with Charmion who has been going gangbusters on the mandolin since this August. I rather enjoyed the creative verses to MARTIN SAYS TO HIS MAN, which I haven't heard since the swaps at the Swedenborgian Church (Wipes a nostalgic tear from his eye)... I did rather enjoy the pickled herrin', beans, crab cakes, sheep cheese, shrimp and whatever else I can't recall. I must admit there was more talking than singing, but is was great to get together with all of you for the First Night. |

01 Jan 05 - 02:20 PM (#1368840) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Well, fatigue and inertia is starting to set in -- a result of way too little sleep -- so I'd prefer to post more when I'm a bit more rested. Came home to a multitude of messages on my answering machine -- my sister's white blood count is back up, among other problems, and wh she's being run through some more tests before surgery probably on Monday. As of the other day, they were going to send her home for 2 weeks of rest and liquid diet before the surgery. Anywho, my brain's not functioning that well right now. The party was lovely! Way too much wonderful food, great music (after a really nice though small session at The Press Room). Great to see Edmund and Charmion again. Also really nice to add another Mudcatter -- Ranger1 -- to my Mudcat Life List. Dogs, cats, music, great conversation, food . . . what more could we want? Grand way to enter the New Year. Later, Linn |

01 Jan 05 - 05:45 PM (#1368984) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Charley Noble Notes from another Survivor: Judy, I and BobBi walked in the door at 10 pm, to an apparently empty house, only to find Sinsull curled up in the back room talking to Naemanson in Guam on the phone. It got more lively after that with the wine, the food, the singing, and who was that woman swinging from the chandler? Nor led "Mollymock" with Eli and I providing back-up. I led "Running Down to Cuba" and Eli led "Sarafina." Linn led "Martin Said to His Man" and I managed to dredge up one of my many dinosaur verses. Brian led "Boston Town" (with a big bow-wow for Seamus). There really were lots of songs, amidst all the talking and good food, and drink. It was good to meet Edmund and Charmion (from Ottawa!) again and meet Ranger1 and her friend for the first time. The mead went down very well! Thanks for inviting us, Sinull, and, yes, it was Judy's camera that I came back this afternoon to pick up, with all its incriminating pictures. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

01 Jan 05 - 06:24 PM (#1368999) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Geez, Charley, I missed the mead! But we did arrive -- no thanks to Sinsull's "directions" ;-) -- in time to talk to Brett who was forced to endure 80 degree weather (and it was actually New Year's Day in Guam, so he was on Time Machine Terra). My camera, alas, stayed in my purse because I was having too much fun in front of the herring, chicken curry and shrimp to dig it out and use it. But I did take some pictures at The Press Room earlier and will send them to Pene Azul as soon as they're available. And I certainly hope Bríen and Judy will post their pictures, too! Charley, tell Judy I've got some margarita juice for her at the next shanty sing. Linn |

Seamus and I went out for a short but vigorous walk on New Year's day. Sinsull, thanks for looking after our pictures. It wouldn't be traditional if I didn't leave something behind. Thanks to everyone. The session at the Press Room was was one of the best I've heard for a long time. There were two, count 'em, two Irish bouzoukis. One lady played and sang some Greek songs that knocked me out. I was wishing we could instantly transport El Greko across the Atlantic so he could join in with his 12 string. Edmund |

02 Jan 05 - 07:24 AM (#1369274) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: GUEST,Charmion also in Burlington VT They say that married people grow to resemble each other ... I, too, left something behind at SINSULL's house: "100 Enduring Irish Session Tunes", my prime source of mandolin repertoire. I'm sorry, Mary! Would it be too much of an imposition if I asked you to mail it to me? I'll PM you our street address when we get home. I had a great time. The Press Room session was, as Edmund said, one of the very best we have attended in recent memory -- lots of good music, good crack and good fellowship. I was tremendously impressed by the quality of the regulars' musicianship and put much on my mettle. I don't think I've sung so well in months. SINSULL's hospitality sets a new high in folkie annals, and we left her with a houseful of dirty dishes. I haven't had such a great time on New Year's Eve since my dancing days. |

02 Jan 05 - 09:18 AM (#1369317) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess Actually, Edmund, Carol's "bouzouki" was a cittern -- more strings. But both were made by local luthier Bob Abrams. You can see more at www.octavemandolin.com. Well, this morning we pushed our scrambled eggs to cream cheese ratio to the limit, Tom and I. After putting in the "normal" (for us) amount, there was slightly less than an inch left on the cream cheese block. I made an executive decision that it was "too little" to put back in the fridge. So we had really REALLY creamy scrambled eggs. Mortimer, who licked the residue off the plate, was in heaven. (He's a cream cheese fanatic anyway.) And, Sinsull! We ALL forgot to sign the closet wall! Linn |

Brían- You're really singing well these days. You should join us the van pool to the next Press Room shanty sing, Saturday, January 15th, 3:30 to 7:30 pm. The van will be leaving 40 Salem St., Portland, on or about 2:15 pm. Mary, you should join us as well. It got scary about an hour east of Ottawa, and we are now enjoying the traditional Ottawa Valley freezing rain. Charley - I will PM you the song. It's the Dewey Dells of Yarrow. The tune and most of the words are from Folksongs of Canada, but I borrowed some verses from Scottish versions. Edmund |

02 Jan 05 - 06:18 PM (#1369630) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: SINSULL And who belongs to the recharger for a Blackberry? I have a theory that people leave things behind so that they can come back and retrieve them. Book, photos, and recharger will be mailed tomorrow, Charmion. Clancy was yellow but not a lab...not an anything as far as I could tell. But he and Seamus hit it off and are planning a play date together. One run of the dishwasher and the worst was gone. Handwashed the crystal and all was done. I too remembered the closet wall after everyone was gone. When I moved in to my house I discovered an unpainted wall in a closet where children's heights were recorded and where guests signed for all sorts of parties - Christmas, birthdays, weddings, etc. dating back to the 60s. I decided to continue the tradition but usually forget until people leave. Need to hang a pen at the door. That was fun. Thank you all for coming and adding to the fun. Next year we can start earlier and have a lot of music. I probably have enough beer and wine for at least one more party. There was not a huge amount of food left over. There were lots of sweets including pastries I forgot to put out. So there are miniature cream puffs and eclairs for next time too. Staring to sleet agian. Nice night to cuddle up and be glad for good friends and good times. Happy New Year, all. |

Best gift I ever gave myself. He sends a hearty woof, woof out to Seamus' human. |

02 Jan 05 - 07:58 PM (#1369701) Subject: RE: New Years Eve at SINSULL's From: Bat Goddess I don't think I mentioned it here, but we came home to multiple messages about my sister who has been in the hospital since before Christmas. Long story short -- she has diverticulitis and an abscess the size of a softball. They had her white blood count way down and were going to send her home on a liquid diet to rest up for two weeks before surgery. Came home to find out her white blood count was way up again and the liquid diet was causing some problems. More tests, etc. They ended up doing "emergency" surgery this morning. That means they removed a bunch of gut, gave her a temporary colostomy and will reconnect the gut in a later surgery. So, needless to say, I've been a bit distracted the past coupla days. I guess she's come out of the surgery okay. Her friend, who waited through the whole five hour procedure (and has now gone home for a nap), called my mother , who called me to relay the information. I think TODAY I'm exhausted. Yesterday, I was just tired from sleep deprivation. Linn |
