Tune Req: Nut Brown Maiden / Shores of Avalon

My wife wants to learn the Seekers' song 'Shores of Avalon', which I believe is set to the tune of Nut Brown Maiden. Does anyone have the music to this - we have the tune on the Seekers' CD, but need the sheet music for it so that she can take it along to her singing teacher. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks again for your help.

Well if you can't just write down the tune from the MIDI you'll need also to download something or other to convert the file to notation. See this thread.

Say, Old Folkie - I see we haven't had the lyrics posted here. Would you be willing to post them?
Thanks.

Heh, some guests just don't have anything worth saying, do they, Joe?

Well, I'm not Old Folkie, but here they are anyway.

The Shores Of Avalon

This boat that I am rowing
Will take you where I'm going
To peaceful waters flowing
On the shores of Avalon

There lies within each troubled heart
A special time and place apart
No storm is ever raging
On the shores of Avalon

This boat that I am rowing
Will take you where I'm going
To peaceful waters flowing
On the shores of Avalon

Clear dreams shall always guide our eyes
A ray of hope before us lies
Where all is calm forever
On the shores of Avalon

This boat that I am rowing
Will take you where I'm going
To peaceful waters flowing
On the shores of Avalon

Where all is calm forever
On the shores of Avalon
To journey's end together
On the shores of Avalon

Anybody know a songwriter name? I thought I had a complete collection of Seekers recordings, but I can't find this one. When did they record it?
Oh, wait - here it is. 1997 Future Road CD by Judith Durham and the Seekers. Arrangement and original lyrics by Judith Durham, Athol Guy, John Kovac, Keith Potger, & Bruce Woodley.

I just loaded that MIDI onto MELODY ASSISTANT V 7.04 where it came up in notation form just as nice as could be; deleted all but the melody staff, transposed it up to "D", printed it out so I could play it on my tin whistle, and gave it a go.

The linked version has a medley of "Nut Brown Maiden" and "Blue Bells of Scotland" which go nicely together, but I can't seem to get the "Avalon" lyrics to work with this tune for some reason. The "meter" just does not seem to jive.

Has anyone else tried it? Are you sure that's the right score to use with "Avalon"?

Am I missing something, here?

I've tried the tune there, and it's full of extras, but when I isolate the topmost line of notes in Finale Notepad Plus, I get the right tune.

The first portion up to the last note of the ninth measure (but not including it) is the first verse.

BTW, Jaque, did you try any of the MID files from the JC Tunefinder that I linked to. There are ABCs or MIDI or PDF or GIF files for the asking.

that IS pretty much the tune used in Shores Of Avalon, lots fancier, though.

Right then; I'm missing something!

Maybe I have to hear it sung for the connection to click;
the next best thing might be to see the lyrics lined up under the notes by syllable.

Metricly speaking, "Avalon" is in "Sevens", in that each line has 7 syllables. About any song that is metricly compatable would do.
I assume that the tune is old / trad, while the lyrics are contemporary, are they not?

I also find myself playing a low "D" in the end of the 6th bar where it shows the paired F and A; it's sort of the unwritten element of that chord and just sounds right for some reason. (remember; I transposed up to "D" - ##). D is where I suspect most Fiddlers would play it, too.

Well all right then; not really caring much for the "nut brown" tune for those lyrics, I composed another one I like better on my whistle.

I think it's rather inspired by one of the old Hymns I was recently perusing in my collection from the early to mid 1800s.

I put it up on Melody and scanned a printout of the score for your appraisal;

Uncle Jaque's Version of "Avalon" (Draft Score)

My timing is a little raggedy in a few places there, and it needs a little fine tweaking.. but that ought to give you the general idea of it.

I think that 6/8 time just sort of "flows" a little better.
What do you think?
