23 Dec 04 - 06:49 AM (#1363938) Subject: Unusual bagpipes depicted From: pavane Walking around Oxford yesterday, I noticed a (carved stone!) gargoyle playing an unusual set of bagpipes. The pipes apparently have a chanter which is slung over the left shoulder, where I would expect a drone, and therefore seemed to be fingered 'upside down'. It also has three drones under the left arm. Does anyone know if this is an accurate representation of a type of bagpipe, or just a stonemason/carver's impression? |

It doesn't look impossible, the chanter comes out at the bottom of the bag, and is directed upwards. The piper's arms are across his chest. |

23 Dec 04 - 12:40 PM (#1364220) Subject: RE: Unusual bagpipes depicted From: pavane No, not at all. The chanter is pointing UPWARDS, and over the left shoulder, not downwards. That's what is so puzzling. |

I reckon that was drawn by someone who had no idea how bagpipes work! Now, if you were a medieval stone cutter, would you want to have a model standing blowing in your ear while you worked? I think it must have been done from memory - and not accurate at all! Robyn |

However as Robyn suggests, some of those images owe more to artistic licence (or bad memory) than to knowledge or understanding of how pipes work. Anahata |
