04 Jan 05 - 12:11 PM (#1370986) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Mack the knife chord formations From: M.Ted If you want some discussion--yes, the chords are fine--and are probably pretty close to Bobby Darin's Las Vegas-style arrangement-the key changes are typical of his arrangements--but they aren't necessary to play the song, and aren't what you'd here in the Louis Armstrong arrangement--the song, as played in the Threepennny Opera, is played on a barrel organ using the chords shown above-- You can use any number of fingerings for the chords--in closed position, you can actually just slide the fingerings that you used in the first key up the neck-- I'd do this: (Bb6) 6-X-5-7-6-X (Cm7)8-X-8-8-8-8 (F7/9) 8-X-7--8-8 (Dm7) 10-X-10-10-10-10 (Ddim) 9-X-8-9-X-X-X To change key, remember that the note on the low E string defines the chord name--so on the Seventh fret, it is a B6, on the Eighth Fret, it is a C6, and on the tenth, it is a D6-- The F7/9 is the same as an F9, every ninth chord includes the dominant seventh--that fingering is moveable up and down the neck, but the name for it comes from its position on the A string-- As I said above, if you don't know how to play these chords already, and you want to be able to play the song in the proximate future, you should just play the song in open C, because it takes quite a while to master the closed position stuff-- |

Anyway - this finally spurred me to put out a search and most of my queries were answered by This Site. I suppose that interest in the song has been sparked off by the Kevin Spacey film about Bobby Darrin. The lyrics above are certainly the ones sung - with asides and extras - in the film soundtrack. Mrs.Duck bought us the soundtrack CD for Christmas, and Kevin Spacey is not only a believable singer, but has an excellent singing voice. I look forward to seeing the film when opportunity arises. I usually don't like bio movies about singers where the songs have been rerecorded by the actor, because they usually don't have the energy of the real music, but this looks like it will be a big exception-- One of the more interesting recordings of Mack the Knife is a duet between Lotte Lenya and Louis Armstrong, recorded at the same time he recorded his hit version of the song--he was the one who added her name to the lyrics-- |

He sings it and I just back off and play fills and leads throughout. The first time we played it (we never rehearse), I noticed one other thing he does different in it. "Hey, did you just sing 'Minnie Driver' instead of 'Jenny Diver'?" "Yeah. It's a little fantasy of mine that she's gonna walk into a bar some night when I'm singing it and she'll notice me and want to have an illicit passionate weekend in Mexico with me as a result." She's a real person, an actress, whereas (I assume) Suki Tawdry, Lucy Brown, Louie Miller and MacHeath himself are ficitonal characters. The recently deceased Jerry Orbach's first job in the New York theater was a minor role in The Threepenny Opera. Before long, he was "promotyed" to the major role of Mack, and (according to his AP obit) he played opposite Lotte herself. |

What I always found confusing was that her name is in the song; I figure she must have played herself, i.e., that Lotte Lenya was/is a character in the play originally played by the actress Lotte Lenya (but undoubtedly portrayed by others as well). I never saw or read The Threepenny Opera -- just know some of the songs. And, besides Mack the Knife, I'm not sure which Weill/Brecht songs are from this particular show. Pirate Jenny? Whiskey Bar/Alabama? |

Now I understand perfectly how Lotte's name found its way into that lyric: Satchmo! As noted above, Lotte Lenya definitely performed in a New York production of Threepenny Opera, at least if the Assocated Press obituary of her costar Jerry Orbach is to be believed. Sorry I misread the earlier post identifying who she had married... By the way, Kevin Spacey's performance of "Mack" as Bobby Darin in the new film "Beyond the Sea" is pretty spectacular. (The band does a great job as well.) I was fortunate enough to see a preview -- free of charge! -- two full weeks before the local opening. |
