Sidmouth? Be Joyful!!

04 Jan 05 - 10:52 AM (#1370910)
Subject: Sidmouth? Be Joyful!!
From: Lizzie in beautiful Sidmouth

I'm sorry to start yet another thread, but the negative title below really sickens me! ('Why are you not going to Sidmouth?')

It is beyond my comprehension, in the present circumstances, how SOME people can continue to be so spiteful and unsupportive! I am not talking to the kind people who have put their thoughts down and those who have supported, very rightly, Steve Heap. But to me it's no longer a 'joking' matter! EVERYTHING has changed and we all need to change with it!

You ARE aware of what has been happening in the world lately I presume?

Do you know that the Editor of The Sidmouth Herald only escaped certain death because she chose to NOT take a boat trip from Penang, on the day of the Tsunami, but went on an inland visit to a Temple instead? She was on her honeymoon. Luckily she and her husband, whose brother owns the Sidmouth Garden Centre, survived. I would imagine that for her, this year's festival and very many other things, will be joyful in a way she never thought possible!

How lucky we all are! How lucky I am to live by the sea in a place where I am safe! How fitting that the Arena is now not taking place and the concerts will be down on The Ham, so close to the sea, where we can all go and sit, play, dance in freedom and safety, with our children and grandchildren around us! Maybe it's because I live by the sea that I feel like this, I don't know! But I'll make sure to enjoy this year's festival, whatever it turns out to be, large or small.

I'm just so mad and upset that the previously mentioned 'Why are you not going to Sidmouth?' thread has even been STARTED! How heartless can you be cowardly 'guest' who set it rolling? It is SURELY time to put things into perspective!

A few weeks ago I was jumping up and down trying to think of ways to raise money for Sidmouth, well, that's all changed. I hope that Knowle Park where the Arena normally is, will be filled with people singing and dancing. There is a large concrete area there, which is normally covered by the stage. It would be perfect for dancing and perfoming on. And I would imagine if everything is spontaneous very little rules and regulations would come into it! Can you actually stop people gathering to enjoy themselves or having 'picnics in the park'....and maybe we could all raise a lot of money for the Tsunami Victims and a little for Sidmouth too.

There are already collections going on all over my town, as I'm sure there are in yours. It would be nice to add to those. Change your priorities! Change your views! Sidmouth is still vitally important, just as ALL our Festivals are, but we are extremely lucky to still have it, and to have people who are prepared to travel from all over the country to make 2005 happen and hopefully 2006 too! We are also EXTREMELY lucky to have the OPTION of whether or not we choose to come to it or not!

Just sit down and imagine Sidmouth Festival without ANY CHILDREN in it........All washed away!

If you can still find it in your heart to make fun or criticise Sidmouth with that in mind then, please, don't come! Honest criticism is different, but stirring and meddling is, in my view, now totally unacceptable.

Please come and be joyful and grateful for what we DO have!
It could so easily have been you or I, or OUR children, family or friends. Fight for everything that is precious to you. Life is short!

Lizzie

Well said. Unfortunately, your attempts to enjoy yourself will, alas, continue to be attacked by a cowardly contributor with many confusing aliases. It is difficult indeed to put up with poisin-pen attacks, you just have to grit your teeth. Good luck.

I've been going to Sidmouth every year since 1984. If I don't go this year it'd be because I want to get a full festival (not necessary as big as it's grown in recent years) back again.

That would be on the basis of a feeling that the best way to ensure that could be to make certain that the local businesses, such as the pubs and the hotels and so forth really notice the difference, and decide that its worth it passing on some of the money they have made from festivalgoers, to help ensure it comes back.

On the other hand I might decide to go, because it should be great fun, and it's pretty likely that there will be a huge fall in takings by local businesses that week anyway, and mu contribution to that wouldn't make much difference.

I dunno. Maybe it's time I gavce broadstairs a go - it's a lot closer, and you should support your local festivals...

"many confusing aliases?"
Not nearly as many as Ms L Cornish herself...

"It is SURELY time to put things into perspective
Indeed. Sidmouth was ONLY a festival with a number of drawbacks, not least the location and lack of suitable, viable venues. Its time is over. The best thing about Sidmouth was the people, the musical collaboration, the exchange of experience. That can, and will, happen again anywhere.

Greg...I've just been watching the BBC news and it featured a lady in Aceh who has lost all her 4 children and her husband. She was sobbing her heart out, all alone on the beach. She suddenly started clinging to the BBC presenter, absolutely DESPERATE for comfort! She was SO hungry and she has NO-ONE left in the world! The BBC man ended up hugging her tightly, thank goodness. But who will be there for her in the future?

And all that some people can do is put spite on messageboards?
They must be VERY sick, is all I can think. It makes me very ashamed.

And McGrath..well...things are changing. The hotels are starting to come together and people are coming forward, but keep it all in persepective. The World changed on Boxing Day. Let us ensure that we change it for the better! I would hope that at all the Festivals across the land there are collections for Asia. Most musicians are caring, feeling people and the coming together that happens at Festivals should be a time of giving like never before.

Also, if you are organising anything for the Tsunami Appeal, take a look on the fRoots messageboard, where Ian Anderson has offered the resources of his magazine to help spread the word. You can e mail him with the details.

Brtoadstairs, yes. I was there briefly last year and it was brilliant both in terms of music and location. See ya there, McGrath!

Always look on the bright side of life!

We can always rely on Lizzie to promote Sidmouth but the inescapable truth is that there is no festival in Sidmouth this year and not even any of the promised concerts in the arena.

There are a few fringe events. That's all. I hope they prove successful but a festival they are not.

Fritz - read the press release. It's not just going to be a few fringe events. Sidmouth will still have a festival, but it will be in the town, not at the Knowle.

Well, well, well!
If the world famous Mr Red is thinking of coming there must be plenty of first class ceilidhs, social dances, concerts and music/song sessions planned!
So Sidmouth Folk Week 2005 must be worth considering positively rather than just reacting friviously in a negative way!

"Mr Red might even get there"

Note the word "might".

I "might" even get there. Then again I might not.

I've been most years since 1987 but the press release doesn't inspire me to load up the old camper van and head south west again.

Oh and Lizzie, whoever you are, please don't abuse me in the same way you abuse others.

I read mudcat. I have never before written to mudcat. I am not a moaner, groaner or loner. I wish last year's epic festival was happening again.

But it isn't. So let's all accept that the Sidmouth festival is gone.

To those with no heart....I wish you well, you need all the love you can get. To those who care....I wish you well too, you're lives are already wealthy in spirit.

But as far as Mudcat goes....I'm finished with it!

Massive changes are happening around the world and I would rather be a part of that than of this shaming Sidmouth 'performance'. Some of those above shame not only the memory of Sidmouth, not only folk music and all that I thought it stood for, but most deeply they shame themselves. I do not need to say anything else...you have said it all yourselves.

Think deeply at 12.00 o'clock today, during the 3 minute silence and ponder on what really is important in your life.

Is that a promise? Does it extend to all newsgroups? Are all these unremitting diatribes now going to be confined to the one place that they belong - the Show of Hands scribbling board? Jeez, let's hope so.

For once I agree with countess richard.

A 'Lizzie-free' board will be a better place.

Hope she also takes all her aliases with her.

Might encourage me to start writing more if I can do so without risking a blast of wrath from Lizzie.

Ach, lighten up, countess. If someone wants to let off steam in a happy albeit inane way, why be a curmudgeon? If you wouldn't cross the street to be gratuitously unpleasant to someone, then don't put finger to keyboard to do it here.

A "fringe" event?

When we hear that international dance sides are being booked for the Arena again then we'll believe there's a proper festival.

But when we read the press release saying nothing at all is booked for the arena then sadly we feel there's just a handful of fringe events with a huge hole in the centre.

A fringe without a festival to be a fringe to?

So it'll be back at a more traditional scale the following year, with a bit of luck. There's so much good momentum there that a year off shouldn't mean the end of it.

So a Folk Festival without International Dancers is not traditional. I thought folk was music and singing. I must have lost the plot!

Folk is music, singing and dancing. In the halls, and on the esplanade, even if there's no arena. And for Sidmouth the dancing came first.

And one thing that has made Sidmouth unique throughout the years has been that outward looking and international aspect of it, because there is always a danger of folk events being too tightly and exclusively national.

This thread is far too happy so, in the interests of balance:

What about insurance? How much is it for and does it cover Rapper?

How can it be a traditional festival if it doesn't have Les
Barker's "Running along the cliffs" workshop like wot it used to?

What precautions are there against a Tsunami on the Sid?

Isn't "Countess Richard" a rather silly made up name by a boring person who doesn't like fun people like Lizzie?

What about the EC Percussion Directive of 2001?

I must make irony more obvious in the future.

Have you heard the one about how many fringe events does it take to make a folk festival? Oh sorry my mistake it wasn't a joke but a serious question. It seems to me with the events listed on the Sidmouth Folk Week website, Tony Days message here, Ray Goodswen's dance series and other events there is a line up which many other festivals would envy. Lets be grateful for the effort many people are putting in to organise this. OK it is not as big as the past few years but how many times have you heard people say "It was better in the good old days when it was smaller". And if you do not want to go so be it.

As for the international dance sides I hear that efforts are being made to get a team of Moldovan pole dancers this year(from a very discrete club, I can give you the name if you ask).

And a team of Peruvian kipper dancers in their multi-colur souwesters were going to be going but when they heard of the possibility of Cloggies from Burnley being there they pulled out saying they could not compete with anything as exotic as that.

Are Hrpensipam Rhomic (from Hungary, I believe) being actively sought? I'm sure their fish dance dance would beat anything the Peruvians could offer.

I'm afraid the Council's Environmental Health Officers have vetoed the fish dance on public health grounds.

As for precautions against a tsunami on the Sid, Tony Day has arranged for teams of morris dancers to act as breakwaters.

I'm with the 'small is beautiful' brigade on this one (not just because I'm 5'4 and a bit in my stockinged feet).

I like sitting in pubs and singing & playing; playing and/or dancing at uncrowded ceilidhs; and being able to get to the bar when my pint's empty.

I do not like queueing for an hour to get into events, standing room only in pubs or shoulder-to-shoulder dancing in ceilidhs to electically amplified music.

I stopped going to Sidmouth in about 1986 because it was getting too big and crowded. Maybe a small 'fringe only' festival is the thing.

(hobbyhorse mode off)

Thanks Steve. Just trying to be helpful. But if we start upsetting the Morris Dancers then that will be another group boycotting Sidmouth this year.

Of course we could just place Lizzie on the prom?
