Mary Travers of PP&M (illness, 2005)

Did Mary Travers play the guitar? If so, did she ever play at any of their concerts and/or on her 70's solo albums? I wonder why she wasn't successful as a solo artist "after" the group split.

There's not much about Mary's health at http://www.peterpaulandmary.com/ - Here's the entire text:

Mary Travers of Peter, Paul & Mary Undergoing Chemotherapy Treatment

Though Mary Travers is currently undergoing chemotherapy for a form of Leukemia, a full remission of the disease is expected within a few months.

Mary looks forward to touring again with the trio soon, and is grateful for the well wishes that have come to her from all over the world.

i think i remember hearing that Mary would accompany herself on guitar in the early 60's before she teamed w/ Paul and Peter.

what's great about PP&M is that they are still able to tour, earn a good living and sell out shows year after year. get well Mary!

I heard Mary played guitar in coffee houses in the late 50's and early 60's IIRC.

Joan Baez, in her autobiography, says that her and Mary were friends and would always be written about on the same page in the history books. She also said on a record that PP&M were her favorite singing group.

PP&M inspired me to learn guitar and sing! I still listen to their records and love Mary's voice especially.

I just received this via e-mail. Thought it would be good to post.

Dear Friends of Peter, Paul & Mary who have been so kind and concerned about Mary,

As you are probably aware, Mary has been battling Leukemia and we had   hoped that the cancer's remission would sustain. However, recently, the cancer returned and therefore she has been admitted to a New York- based hospital for further treatment.

Notwithstanding this new, unwelcome, challenge, Mary's spirits are strong, her humor in tact, and her determination to beat the cancer, undiminished.

At this point, her doctors are investigating the possibility of a bone marrow transplant and so we are reaching out to all of her many friends around the world to see if you might be generous enough to consider registering as a potential bone marrow donor. Your bone marrow might be a fit for Mary and, if not, you might be able do a great service (mitzvah) for others who similarly need a transplant.

The National Marrow Donor Program (associated with the Red Cross) offers the test to determine your blood and bone marrow   specifics for free and can be contacted through tel 800-627-7692; an online form at www.marrow.org; or mail to National Marrow Donor Program, Suite 500, 3001 Broadway Street Northeast, Minneapolis, MN 55413-1753.

Mary wants to extend her most heartfelt thanks to all of you who sent such beautiful messages of concern, love, healing and humor. Paul Kehoe put them together in binders for her and she has read each and every one of them.
Bravo for caring enough to let Mary know how much you truly do love, respect and cherish her.

Keep Mary in your hearts, your thoughts and your prayers. It will make a difference-- it already has.

Love from Mary's immediate extended family circle that sends you this   note.

P.S. Please do email the website (ForMary@peterpaulandmary.com) if you get a bone marrow test. We'd like to know about each of your gestures in this regard, and be able share your names with Mary.

I know statistics say one out of three of us will have some kind of oncological experience in our lifetime (and somewhere out there two of you owe me) but I still don't understand why this same damn affliction (Leukemia)has to strike so many of the artists I treasure. Steve Goodman, Kate Wolf, now Mary Travers.
God be with you Mary.

I would encourage everyone to register with the bone marrow donor
group. If you end up matching the most number of factors out of
6 things they test for, you could help save a life. This is a
great thing to do. It can most likely be done thru your local
blood bank (whehter or not it is associated with Red Cross) I hope
this wil be able to help Mary. If we can give her some small
gift in exchange for all that she has brought to the world
musically, that will be one way to thank her. All that is
needed to test your bone marrow type is a small amount of blood
that you donate for testing. There may be a $60 fee for registration,
but often the local blood bank has a way to cover those expenses.

Most unwelcome news indeed! I do hope this round of treatment will work and she'll recover.

Auggie, I have heard that leukemia afflicts people who do a lot of travelling by air more than those who do not. On the other hand, I know at least three people who've lived and worked with this illness for ten years and more. Not desirable, I agree, and I fervently wish Mary Travers a better fate!

Regarding the bone marow donation program, I called them some time back, when I first heard of Mary's illness, and was told that since I am (quite a bit) over the age of 50, I do not qualify as a donor. Apparently my platelets are too old, or somwthing like that.

23 Feb 05 - 11:54 PM (#1419234)
Subject: RE: Mary Travers of PP&M
From: open mike

according to www.marrow.org
Potential donors must be between the ages of 18 and 60 years old and meet health guidelines. A small blood sample is taken and tested to determine the donor's tissue type. Potential donors also complete a brief health questionnaire and sign a consent form to have their tissue type listed on the Registry.
I wish Mary the BEST!!

I was on campus where I work yesterday and walked past a table with a volunteer distributing marrow donor information. Had I only known! I had my son with me and he wasn't feeling well, but I'm sure they'd have been happy to arrange another time for a test. I'll check to see if she's around next time I'm over there. Thanks for the news on this, and for offering the possibility that someone who cares to might be able to help. I certainly hope 50 isn't the cut-off! I'm just there right now.

I read that Christine Lavin is encouraging get well wishes to Mary as she will be hospitalized for at least six weeks following a bone marrow transplant. Christine further says that, "Mary is very funny, sarcastic and loves a good joke." Sounds like a wicked sense of humor. Send your messages and missives to: getwellmary@aol.com. April 13, 2005

Dear Friends,
I feel a bit like a ball player hanging on third, waiting for a hit good enough to bring me home.

I'm getting as ready as I can for the transplant that we will do in another two weeks. We found a match - well, almost. Nine points out of ten. I hate to say this but it's close enough for folk music.

I want to share with all of you just how much your words of encouragement, your prayers and all of your good thoughts and wishes have meant to me. The response that we have received on our web site has been overwhelming; it's impossible to really know just how many lives have been touched by our music these past forty-four years. Now, I know that there are a lot of you out there rooting for me and that has made all the difference in this terrible time.

I feel grateful beyond words and sustained by your many voices. I'm sure that it's part of what has given me the strength to fight and the drive to sing again.

So I can only say, thank you, thank you!

Mary

I put it there because I know many Catters have written to her. She is a wonderful woman.

Update on Mary
June 24, 2005

Hi Friends:
I spoke with Mary today and not only does she sound terrific, she reports that she is feeling better each day.

She asked me to share with all of you that she is now at Day 58 since the transplant procedure was done and that the donor's cells have been doing their intended job. She's gaining strength and so happy to be home with her husband enjoying the beautiful summer weather on her patio.

She laughed with amazement when I told her that I had just mailed off the 19th notebook binder of well wishes to her. She is just so incredibly moved by the outpouring of love and concern you've shown for her.

So, a big THANK YOU and HUG from Mary for your continuous support!

Other items on the PP&M Website have been updated as recently as July 24, so I guess there's no significant change in Mary's condition since the message from Paul Kehoe.

MARY IS HOME!!!!

Mary was released from the hospital this week, exactly one month after the bone marrow transplant procedure, and is so happy to be home! The graft "took" and she reports that her donor marrow is making wonderful cells, ALL FOR HER!

She sends her thanks for all the wonderful messages and letters of support , encouragement and humor that have been pouring into the PP&M Website email and Coffeehouse since early December....

So, a warm, gracious hello from Mary... and she'll be sure to keep the extended PP&M family posted as to how she's doing.

Update on Mary
August 28, 2004

Dear Friends,
It's Fall and school begins for Paul Kehoe. Paul teaches 2nd graders so he'll have his hands full of lively charges.
As you probably know, he's been printing out and responding to all of your wonderful messages and putting them in looseleaf binders. I have read every single one and as of now there are 26!
I have been feeling marvelous and just keep getting stronger. I am past 120 days since the transplant and life is beginning to be more and more normal.
Paul and I figure that what with school starting and my continued health, we should stop making the books - and just let you all know from time to time how things are going.
I want to thank you again for your incredible support. It has meant a great deal to me. Music has always been a blessing to me - and now I realize it has blessed so many of you as well.
Thank you for your many kindnesses.

Love,
Mary

P.S. We'll be touring next year!

Great news. I have so much respect for them. Also, the original Chad Mitchell trio of Joe Frazier, Mike Kobluk, and Chad himself are touring again. again, a lot of respect for those original groups who need not impersonate anyone, such as today's Kingston Trio, who albeit has George Grove for many years, has members that mostly impersonate recordings of others who created the originals under the same name.
