Lyr/Tune/Chords Req: Snow Deer (Mahoney, Wenrich)

Looking for lyrics and or lead sheet for old song "Snowdeer", probably around the 1920's maybe earlier.

Song starts "white man come, bullets hum..."

Chorus: "My pretty snowdeer, say you will go dear,
from my arms you will never part,
every trail leads to my heart
no time to tarry no time to marry
every trail leads to my heart my sweet snowdeer...

Realize we have quite a bit of it but would like the rest of the song if anyone has it or knows of it, or can tell me where to find it. Would appreciate it very much. Thanks Dano

Snow Deer

Sweet Snow Deer mine, moon's a-shine through the pines
While Mohawks sleep, let us creep through the vale
Your cowboy lover your heart will cover
Don't hesitate, it is late, ponies wait
For you and me by the trees in the dale
Hear tom-toms beating. Let's hit the trail.

My pretty Snow Deer, say you will go, dear
From your side I'll never part, every trail leads to your heart
It's time to marry, no time to tarry
Let me carry you away from here, my sweet Snow Deer

The red men come, bullets hum, there'll be some
Left on the trail, I can't fail, cling to me
We'll crown the story with love and glory
Now after all must I fall, hear my call
And fly away while we may, can't you see
Those ranch lights gleaming. Safe there we'll be.

Good words ! There was an earlier thread on this some time ago. Put "snowdeer" in the thread box and set the days to 365 and, hopefully, it will magically appear. May have slight variation on the supplied lyrics above. Its one of my favorite melodies.

Elva and Les, Any chance you could email me , I would like to get more info on this song for my Pop who is the one who wanted this in the first place, he remembers the song when he was a young man(near 70 now ) and since he is Mohawk we figure that his version might be different considering the implications in the song, I'd appreciate if you could get in touch with me.

Thanks for your help to this point, he's amazed he got this much! Dano

This is a great old fiddle tune that I have played for years. Many of you must know it. I spotted framed sheet music for the song in a restaurant this summer. Since then I have been hunting for the words. Can anyone help?

If you type snow deer in the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page, you'll find that lyrics have been posted here on more than one occasion.

SNOW DEER
Words, Jack Mahoney. Music, Percy Wenrich.
New York: Wenrich-Howard Co., 1913.

Sweet Snow Deer mine, moon's a-shine through the pine.
While Mohawks sleep, let us creep through the vale.
Your cowboy lover your heart will cover.
Don't hesitate. It is late. Ponies wait
For you and me by the tree in the dale.
Hear tom-toms beating. Let's hit the trail.

CHORUS: My pretty Snow Deer, say you will go, dear.
From your side I'll never part.
Every trail leads to your heart.
It's time to marry, no time to tarry.
Let me carry you from here, my sweet Snow Deer.

The red men come, bullets hum! There’ll be some
Left on the trail. I can't fail. Cling to me.
We'll crown the story with love and glory.
Now after all, must I fall? Hear my call
And fly away while we may. Can’t you see
Those ranch lights gleaming? Safe there we'll be.

Thank you all! I went to the threads and got some versions. Ebbie's looks as though it's right on the mark. I still want to see the sheet music - great art work on the front, so I'll be re-visiting that restaurant first chance that I get. Thanks again for your help.

I've never seen a web site like this before. What are these Threads as you call them. Where can I find instructions how to use such a site? dew

P.S. I was glad to get the lyrics, but they seem kindof uninspired, and don't fit the tune so well in some places. I think I'll just keep playing it as a tune. dew

From
The Fiddler's Companion
scroll down to bottom of page.

SNOW DEER. American, Canadian; Two-Step or Polka (2/4 time). USA; Michigan, Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina. G Major (Johnson, Phillips): D Major. Standard. AB (Johnson): AA'BB' (Phillips). In the repertory of Arizona fiddler Kenner C. Kartchner, who said it was a "pioneer song of long ago." In actuality it was a Tin-Pan-Alley song by Percy Wenrich who composed it around the end of the first decade of the twentieth century, during the craze for ethnic American Indian songs. Johnson (1986) says it is a popular tune with Michigan fiddlers, and indeed from its tin-pan-alley beginnings it entered traditional North American fiddle repertoire. Most older Pennsylvania fiddlers know and play the tune, according to Robert Buckingham, "always in harmony if there are two or more fiddlers." It was in the repertoire of Sandhills/Cape Fear, North Carolina, regional fiddler Lauchlin Shaw, though it was uncharacteristic of most of his repertoire of reels and waltzes. Also in repertoire of New Brunswick, Canada, fiddler Ned Landry. Johnson (The Kitchen Musician's No. 7: Michigan Tunes), Vol. 7, 1986-87; pg. 5. Phillips (Traditional American Fiddle Tunes), Vol. 2, 1995; pg. 132. Ruth (Pioneer Western Folk Tunes), 1948; No. 72, pg. 26. RCA LCP 1001, Ned Landry and his New Brunswick Lumberjacks - "Bowing the Strings with Ned Landry." Ruffwater Stringband - "Michigan Winter."

The words posted by Ebbie do seem to fit the tune given in The Fiddler's Companion.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

I am a WWII vet. Lived in English Indiana for my young life. I used to play this song for many years. But I lost the lyrics and have been looking for this song for years. I'm 83 years young. Still play a lot of jazz guitar. I really, really, really appreciate this song. It's the same as I used to play it with a trio of guitar, bass, and piano. We loved this song dearly. Again Thanks so much and feel free to e-mail me whoever you are out there.

In 1947, my family in AR gathered around Mother's Day. All of my Grandmother's 8 children were there and many pictures exist today of that gathering. One memory I have of that time is some of the cousins playing on Grandma's wind up music machine, which played cylinder recordings. The one thing I remembered was the words "my sweet snow deer". The tune is on this page.

I feel so blessed to have found the words to this song. My daddy sang or hummed this song many times in my presence and I've always thought of it as his favorite song. I am seventy years old and daddy has been gone for 35 years, but I can still hear it...some of the words are a little different than I remembered. Thanks so much.

I used to listen to my Grandmother Lillian sing and whistle this song when I was four years old (1949). It was one of her favorites. My mother sang it also. I only remember a few of the words and the tune to the chorus. I can't seem to be able to get a recording of it to hear the melody. Can you do this on the computer? I am Computer illiterate. I need: "See the box that says..." instructions, and "Then you click on here"...etc.
